The Hartshorn family is of ancient English lineage. The surname was taken from a parish of this name in Litchfield diocese, Derbyshire. The family was well established as the records show, as early as the thirteenth century. Henry de Hartshorn and others of the family are mentioned in Derbyshire.

Thomas Hartshorn, founder of the family in this country and immigrant ancestor, was born in England in 1614. He died 3 Apr 1654, aged about 40 years. Thomas was one of the earliest settlers of Reading, MA. He is thought to have come from Reading, England in the mid-1630's. He settled about 1640 on Elm Street, Reading, before the incorporation, and part of the place he owned was still occupied by a descendant, Joseph Hartshorn, in 1874. He and his first wife were among those listed as founding the Wakfield Congregational Church in 1644 or 1645. Thomas was a freeman in 1648, and a selectman from 1661-1667.

Mr. S. K. Hamilton, the chairman of the commemorative gathering in 1877, in calling for toasts to the oldest families, said "Among the honored names of the early church of the first parish are found those of Thomas and Susannah Hartshorne, and later, that of James Hartshorne, for over twenty years a deacon of this church - a numerous and respected race, noted for their intelligence and good looks."
