Catherine supposedly had breast cancer and was cured by William. The family told of many people cured - they would come and stay in the home for a period of time. He made his own medicine (grew many plants). He had a herb room where he cured and stored the plants.

“About the beginning of the present century quite a settlement had sprung up in the vicinity of what is now Mandana... Other early settlers in the vicinity were Israel Sabins (a blacksmith), Tunis Van Houghton, James Gardner, Samuel Robertson, Edward Greenman, and William Watts...”122
