Settled at West Farms, now Franklin, CT, in part now known as Bozrah. He resided on the Portipang Road near Smith’s Corner in what is now called Franklin. From “History of Franklin Cong. Church,” it reads: If you take the Portipang Road - West Farm - 1663-1725 you will soon pass Serj. Nathaniel Rudd - then Samuel Hartshorne - Lieut Thos. Hazen, - Dr. David Hartshorne, father of Samuel - then Benjamin and John Armstrong - to the right Capt. John Fillmore, - Samuel Griswold. Across the bridge lives John Elderkin - take left hand road winding thru Portipang pass Increase Mosely - Dr. John Sabin - Joseph Ayer - climbing Pleasure Hill farm of Jacob Hyde and David Ladd. Later moved to Norwich, CT where he was one of the organizers of the first church. Nathaniel helped organize the first church in West Farms (now Franklin) and his name appears many times in civil affairs. ? 7, 1678, Saybrook Town agrees to give 5 acres to those who fought the Indians. Nathaniel Rudd's name is on the list - this relates to King Phillip's War. Nathaniel's estate at his death was valued L680. He had 13 children, 3 by his first wife and 10 by his second.

Mr. Rudd was a man of some celebrity as a turkey hunter. He was a remarkable shot often bringing down several turkeys at one trial.89 An anecdote related to Horace Rudd by Jabez Rudd who had it from his grandfather, Captain Nathaniel Rudd who said that his grandfather was quite a good hand to hunt wild turkeys, in that he would endeavor to find the place where they roosted and then as soon as daylight appeared in the morning, he would be on the ground nearby. When he had walked a near the turkeys as he thought proper he would wrap himself up in a blanket or his overcoat and then lie down and roll himself on the ground until he got as near the turkeys as he pleased when he would suddenly bring his gun to his face and fire. Sometimes he would bring down several of them at a shot.101

Rudd, Serj. Nathaniel, was a son of Jonathan of Saybrook. He early settled at West Farms, and his dwelling was on the Portipaug Road a short distance north of Smith’s Corners. He was chairman of the first committee elected by the society after its organization, and besides, took a prominent part in the civil affairs of the settlement. By first marriage in 1685 to Mary Post, he had son Jonathan and three daughters. By second marriage in 1705-6 to Abigail Hartshorne, had son Nathaniel and other children. He died in 1727.102

“(II) Nathaniel, believed to be son of Lieutenant Jonathan Rudd, was born in 1660, died April, 1727. He settled at West Farms, in what is now the town of Franklin, where he was one of the organizers of the first church there. He married (first) April, 1685, Mary Post, died November, 1705; (second) Abigail Hartshorn, January 21, 1706. Children by first marriage: Jonathan, born May 22, 1693, Married Joanna Gregory; Mary, February 3, 1695, married Ebenezer Wood; Lydia, died young. Children by second marriage: Nathaniel, born April 6, 1707; Joseph, of further mention; Daniel, March 12, 1710, married Mary Metcalf; Sarah, January 23, 1712; Abigail, August 6, 1717; Susanna, March 13, 1719; Gideon, February 2, 1722; Patience, November 6, 1723.”76, Hudson-Mohawk Family Memoirs, Vol. IV, Hudson-Mohawk Family Histories

Jonathan and Nathaniel Rudd were brothers, and probably were sons of the Jonathan Rudd who was married by John Winthrop, Esq., at Bride Brook, in the winter of 1646-47. this marriage is graphically related by Miss Fanny Caulkins in the History of New London.

Jonathan Rudd settled east of the Shetucket River in what is now the town of Preston, and Nathaniel at the West Farms, in what is now called the town of Franklin. He was one of the organizers of the first church in Franklin.

Nathaniel married 16 April 1685, Mary, daughter of John Post. She died in November, 1705. He then married 21 Jan., 1706, Abigail Hartshorn. He died in April, 1727, leaving an estate valued at L689.75

Jonathan and Nathaniel RUDD, brothers, came from Saybrook. The former settled east of the Shetucket, and the latter at the West Farms. It is probable that they were sons of that Jonathan RUDD who was married at Bride Brook in the winter of 1646-47.

Nathaniel RUDD married, April 15, 1684, Mary, daughter of John POST. His homestead was in that part of the West farms which is now Bozrah. He died in April, 1727, leaving an estate valued at £689.

Daniel RUDD, one of the sons of Nathaniel, born in 1710, married for his second wife (July 1, 1745) Mary Metcalf, a daughter of the Rev. Joseph METCALF, of Falmouth, Me. She had previously been living with her relatives in Lebanon, to which place she came from her far-off home, according to tradition, in a three days' journey, riding on a pillon behind Capt. James FITCH. Her son, Daniel RUDD, Jr., born June 10, 1754, married Abigail ALLEN, of Montville, who died Jan. 20, 1857, wanting only a few months of being one hundred years of age. Lucy RUDD, one of the daughters of this couple, married, first, Capt. Henry CALDWELL, of the United States Marines, and second, Maj.-Gen. Henry BURBECK, an officer of the Revolutionary war and of that of 1812. Gen. BURBECK died at New London, Oct. 2, 1848, aged ninety-give. His relict. Mrs. Lucy BURBECK, is still living. It is a singular coincidence, occurring, it is presumed, very rarely in the history of families, that Mrs. BURBECK's father, Daniel RUDD, and her husband, Henry BURBECK, were born on the same day, June 10, 1754. 103
