Misc. Notes
Has a quaint old tombstone in the Old Cemetery by the Congregational Church at Old Bennington. It is believed that this stone, which says "Deacon Stephen Story" is the second oldest stone in this cemetery. His wife Mary's stone is missing.
In 1736 Stephen Story and wife, Mary, were dismissed from Ipswich Church to the Norwich Church. Stephen Story's house at Norwich (West Farms) 1663-1725 was near his mill on the road to Norwich, not too far from the Burying Ground.
In the Bennington Town Records there is a deed recorded of land purchased by Stephen Story from Moses Robinson in 1763. Among the organizing members of the Old First Church in Bennington were Stephen, Elijah and Mary Story. Stephen was received into the church on 3 Dec 1762. Mary, wife of Stephen, was received to full communion on 3 Jan 1765. On 29 May 1763, Stephen was a member of a Committee to Westfield, MA, "in settling Mr. Jedidiah Dewey." Both Stephen and Mary were signers of the original covenant of the Old First Church in Bennington in 1763.
