“John was born at Charlestown Aug. 3, 1657, but the next year his father removed to Haverhill. He married first Mary Mousal of Charlestown Sept. 8, 1680, who was born May 26, 1659, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Richardson) Mousal; and who died May 23, 1688. he married second Feb. 19, 1689 Lydia Clement, who was born Dec. 14, 1668, the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth (Fawne) Clement, and who died Oct. 11, 1696. For a third wife he married his cousin Mary Johnson May 16, 1697. I have not found her death date. John Johnson succeeded his father as a blacksmith in Haverhill; and is styled Lieutenant in the records. He divided his property by a will of which his son Timothy was the executor, and died March 9, 1724.”8

John Johnson drew a will on 1 August 1723, proved 24 March 1724, witnessed by David Craig, Samuel Griffing, and Richard Hazzen, and bequeathed “the remaining property to his widow and ten children.” He first charged his youngest son, Samuel, to see that his wishes for the comfort of his “beloved wife Mary” were carried out. To his son John “his fourth division of Upland and meadow when ever it shall be laid out” for his portion “with what he has before received of me already.” To son Thomas “land by the great pond which he now has and enjoys by deed from me ...” To son Nathaniel “that land that he has by deed from me”; to son Timothy “Land and meadow at Spicket [river] and the reaminder of my estate and I appoint him sole executor.” To son William “my fifth division of Upland and my meadow at the west and all my Shopp Tools for Carrying on the Blacksmith Trade.” To son Samuel “all my homestead of houseing and land and that part of Sicket meadow which I have not yet been possessed of and my common Rights of land which are already laid out or which may hereafter be laid out in the Cow Common.” To his remaining heirs he bequeathed money or household goods: grandson John Chase, son of deceased daughter, Lydia Chase; and daughters Mary Hasseltine, Sarah Duston, Elizabeth, Hannah, and Abigail Johnson.
