Descendants of John Thom(s) (1803-1851): Second Generation

Second Generation

9. Charles Martin1 Thoms (JohnA Thom)(20) was born in Montrose, Tayside, Scotland 13 Apr 1846.(21) Charles died 30 May 1930 at 84 years of age.(22) Unknown place of death. The date of death was found in a printed family bible record. It was probably written by his son Alexander, or grandson James.

He married Helen Kennedy in New York, New York, NY, 3 Sep 1873.(23) Married at the Chapel of the Church of the Incarnation in the City of New York by Edward Cowley, Presbyter. Witnesses were Mrs. C. Dickerson, Ralph and Emily Gee.

Helen was born in Dundee, Tayside, Scotland 5 Jan 1848.(24) Helen died before 1906. Helen was deceased at the time of her son Alexander's marriage in 1906. Helen possibly died in New York City.

He petitioned the court to become a citizen in Brooklyn, Kings, NY, 18 Oct 1886.(25) He was listed on a passenger list in New York, New York, NY, 31 Mar 1913.(26) Charles apparently changed his last name from THOM to THOMS, possibly when entering the United States in New York City as an immigrant from Scotland.

According to the 1920 US Census, Charles first immigrated to the U.S. (with his family?) in 1854 at age 8, and was later naturalized a U.S. Citizen in 1866 [this conflicts with a passenger list, which states he was naturalized in Brooklyn, NY on 18 Oct 1886]. He and his family apparently went back to Dundee, Scotland soon after the birth of his son William in August 1874 in New York City. Then came back to the U.S. later, perhaps sometime soon after his widowed mother died in 1882. She died of "cerebral softening", so he may have gone back to Scotland from 1874 until her death to take care of her.

He was an Engineer in Brooklyn, New York City as of 14 Sep 1872 - from a certificate showing he could "take charge of Steam Boiler and Engine No. 810 as recorded on the books of the Brooklyn Police Department, situated at No. Cor. 3d Ave. & 3d Street, in the City of Brooklyn." He had also been certified to "take charge of Steam Boiler and Engine situated at 1 Frankfort St. in the City of New York, which Steam Boiler is recorded in the books of the Police Department of the City of New York as No. 1475 ..." on 28 Apr 1883.

Worked at Jaybank(?) Works in Dundee, Scotland as a factory mechanic from approximately 1874 to 5 Jul 1879.

Charles lived with his son Alexander and family in his later years.
