What is the YukonGenWeb Project? |
|
The YukonGenWeb
Project site exists for the compilation and
free dissemination of Yukon related genealogy and
history resources,
and is part of the CanadaGenWeb Project. The CanadaGenWeb is organized geographically. The national page
links to the provincial and territorial pages which, in
turn, link to the county (or regional) pages, where the
majority of the genealogy data can be found.

The
CanadaGenWeb Project is based on the USGenWeb Project.
In March and April of 1996, a group of genealogists
organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database
Project. The idea was to provide a single entry point on
the Internet for all counties in Kentucky, where all
collected databases would be stored. In addition, the
databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that
even if an individual were found in more than one
county, they could be located in the index.
At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing
to coordinate the collection of databases at the county
level and generally oversee the contents of the web
pages.
The same type of project now exists for every state in
the U.S.A., as well as many countries around the World,
including Canada.
The
CanadaGenWeb Project is modeled after the
USGenWeb
Project and our common goal is the collection and
distribution of genealogical data on the Web.
Researchers of Canadian genealogy resources are very fortunate in that there is already
an enormous amount of Canadian information available on
the Internet. The role of the CanadaGenWeb and
YukonGenWeb Projects is
to assist researchers in locating this information, as
well as to add to the existing online data.
The YukonGenWeb site was established in February, 1998
by J. Scott Wilson, who was responsible for the
development and maintenance of the web site until
October, 2006 -- thank you Scott.
