Canada Year Book. Additionally Statistics Canada has published the Canada Year Book (CYB). These provide a look at the present conditions and recent progress for each year of publication. The Educational chapters from a variety of these year books provides a glimpse into the challenges faced by pioneer communities striving to provide an education to their children. As "the little schools are determining the direction of all future citizenship...the conditions that surrounded that school made for success." "Changes in educational courses are never radical. The objects of education are young human beings. The design of education is to allow the varied personalities of these young human beings to unfold in an ideal environment. One cannot experiment with such precious objects. Education is steady and sane. It is an institution, not a fad or a policy." spake Augustus H. Ball, deputy minister of Education. The CYB presents the conditions of the prairie country school, the community educational needs, school district organisation and formation, teachers and their training at Normal Schools, school hygiene and health, attendance and financial support as they evolve through the decades. "Education is not for the individual", said Premier T.C. Douglas, "but for the country as a whole." "The Statistics of education read like a romance. In 1905 when the province was organized out of the North West Territories there were only 894 school districts. There are not 45,625," said Ball in May of 1925.
