AURAMENKO � Alexander Auramenko was born in 1883 in Kiev, Russia. He married Maria Dybowa Sodoway and they had three children in Russia, before immigrating to Canada in April of 1911. Alex brother, Andrew also accompanied them and settled in Rochester, New York. The family homesteaded twenty miles north of Stenen. They farmed in the Woodlight district until 1945 and then moved to a farm near Brandon, MB. Alexander passed away in 1948. AURAMENKO � John L. Auramenko, 65 of Hyas and formerly of the Sturgis area, died May 18, 1980 in the Canora Hospital. Funeral held in the Hyas Baptist Church. Born in the Woodlight district north of Sturgis, he was educated in the Woodlight School. He married Mary Yaremko in 1948 in the Sturgis Alliance Church. They farmed in the Woodlight district and later farmed north of Hyas, while he worked at the Norquay Auction Mart. He was the secretary of Woodlight School and also a trustee of the United Grain Growers. Predeceased by his parents, Alexander and Maria, and a brother Gordon, he is survived by his wife; two sons, Duane of Laloche, SK, and Dale of Hyas; three daughters, Grace Procyshen of Red Deer, Diane Korowchynses of Edmonton and Norine Auramenko of Laoche; two brothers, Dan of Sturgis and Paul of Yorkton; four sisters, Teena Serdachny, Pauline Kostiew, Mary Auramenko and Ann Halsey; two grandchildren. AURAMENKO � Dan Auramenko, 75 of Sturgis, died on March 9, 1983 in the Canora Union Hospital. Funeral service was held in the Hyas Baptist Church and burial in the Stoney Creek Cemetery. Born May 14, 1907 in Kiev, Ukraine, he came to Canada with his parents, Alexander and Maria Auramenko in 1911. He was educated at the Woodlight School. He married Mary Droneck on November 1, 1934 at the Droneck home north of Sturgis. He farmed all his life in the Woodlight district. He was a trustee of the Woodlight School and was on the board of the United Grain Growers. Predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Gordon and John, he is survived by his wife; two sons, Arthur of Sturgis and Donald of Calgary; three daughters, Lillian of Regina, Judy of Porcupine Plain and Margaret of Prince Albert; a brother Paul of Yorkton; four sisters, Tena Serdachny of Hyas, Pauline Kostiew of Brandon and Mary and Ann. AURAMENKO � Maria Auramenko (nee Sodoway) was born May 14, 1885. She married Alexander Auramenko and they had three children born in Russia prior to coming to Canada in 1911. One son died during the three weeks it took to get to Halifax. The family homesteaded north of Stenen. Their children were Dan, Paul, Gordon Michael, John Leo, Tena, Pauline and twins Mary and Ann Eugennie. Maria passed away July 10, 1958. BELLOWS � George Bellows, 87 of Hyas, passed away April 13, 1988 in the Plains Health Centre in Regina. Funeral service held in the Hyas Baptist Church. He was born on November 9, 1900 in Kiev, Ukraine; He was the eldest child of Ewdokin Bellous and Ellen Zubko. In 1910, he immigrated to Canada with his parents, and the family settled on a homestead in the Hyas district. He began farming on his own in 1926 in that district and continued to farm there until his death. He was also an avid fisherman and beekeeper. He was an active member of the Church for over 60 years. He married Nettie Kachman on November 26, 1928 at Overstone, Manitoba. Predeceased by his parents, a son Billy and a grandson, Gordon Glen, he is survived by his wife, Nettie; a son, Ken (Joyce) of Calgary; two daughters, Joyce (jack) Glen of Regina Beach and Irene (Vic) Sotropa of Regina; five brothers, Andrew of Spokane, Washington, Mike of Saskatoon, and Anton, Peter and Wilfred of Hyas; six sisters, Nettie Ostafichuk, Annie Kachman, and Lillian Bellows of Hyas, Polly Serdachny of Stenen, Diane Borisenko of Toronto an Mary Laramee of Winnipeg; and 11 grandchildren. BELLOWS � Wilfred John Bellows passed away at his home near Hyas, SK, on March 19, 2014, at the age of 94 years. Wilfred was born on March 10, 1920, on the family homestead near Hyas, SK. He was the fourth youngest of twelve children born to Edward and Ellen (Zubko) Bellows. Wilfred attended school in Hyas up to grade eight. At age fifteen, he found a passion for electricity; his first electrical job was to install a windmill generator that brought the first electrical light to the family home. He maintained his electrical contract license up until his passing, possibly being the oldest registered electrician in the world. In 1945, he married Eunice Dutcyvich in the Hyas Baptist Church. They had seven children together. Shortly after they married they moved a half a mile down the road where they started the family farm, which consisted of livestock and grain farming. Wilfred remained active in farming until 1980 and lived his entire life in the same house until his passing. Wilfred was generous in many ways. He was often donating money to several ministries as he grew up in a home where the ongoing work of the gospel was key. He continued to be generous not only to ministries, but in little ways by helping people out in need, calling to see if they were okay and using his time to drive over to their place to ensure their safety. He was continuously ready to offer advice to people who asked and provide them with the resources to meet their needs. He always had a strong faith in God and considered himself blessed. He always hoped that others would experience the happiness he found in his faith. Wilfred never retired from living life. He always enjoyed the company of people and his positive attitude about everything continued throughout his life, right up until his passing. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Wilfred is predeceased by his parents, Edward and Ellen and eight of his siblings. He is survived by his seven children: Randy (Beverly), Lorne (Judy), Gordon (Brenda), Marilyn, Lorraine (Murray), Cheryl and Kelly (Maureen); seventeen grandchildren and eight-great grandchildren; his brother Peter of Yorkton; and his sisters: Diane of Toronto and Lillian of Preeceville as well as many relatives and friends. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at 11:00 AM from the Chapel of Leson�s Funeral Home, Canora with Pastor Greg Bright officiating. Interment preceded in the Stoney Creek Cemetery, between Stenen and Hyas, SK prior to the service. BELOUS � Anna Belous, daughter of Alex and Nadazda Belous, was born September 11, 1912 and passed away in 1924. BELOUS � Anne Edith (nee Panchuk) Belous passed away on October 21, 2013, at the age of 101 years. Anne was born in the Hyas District on February 5, 1912. She was the eldest of three surviving children. Her parents Metro and Sonja immigrated to Canada in 1897 and settled on a homestead in the Elbow Lake district. Anne attended school in Elbow Lake and spent her early years on the family farm. On June 20, 1933 she married Anton Belous and they settled on a farm near Hyas. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary a year before Anton passed away at the age of 100. Together they raised five children. Anne enjoyed a full life. Hard work was no stranger to her. She could whip up a meal at the drop of a hat when Anton or her children would bring home unexpected guests. Every year her large garden, especially her mile long raspberry patch (according to her children) fed not only her family but relatives and friends. Anne loved and was very proud of her grandchildren, Lilieth, Hanz, Meghan, Tai, Ryan, Kira, Erin, Bryan and Kristen, always supporting their activities and celebrating their accomplishments. She revelled in her great grandchildren, Yelaina, Devon, Tessa, Sheldon, Daniel, Reese, Abrielle, Addison and Drew, using technology like Skype to see and talk to them whenever possible. She enjoyed reading, even “ploughing” through the weekly Western Producer. She was an active member of the Hyas Baptist Church and was involved in the Ladies’ Organization. Anne’s strong faith in God helped to enrich her life and guided her through difficult times. She thanked God daily for always meeting her needs. Most importantly Anne loved the Lord and was sure of her salvation. All who knew Anne were touched by her wisdom, kind heart, compassion, generosity, and gracious spirit. Anne was predeceased by her husband, Anton, brother, John, and daughter, Janice. She is lovingly remembered by her brother, Metro Panchuk (Dorothy); her children: Sonja, Gayle (James), Iona (Ian), and Wayne (Valdene); and her son-in-law, Bill. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Darling officiating. A private family interment will take place in the Stoney Creek Cemetery. BELOUS � Anton Belous, 99 of the Hyas district, passed away on March 9, 2004 in the Canora Hospital. Funeral held in the Hyas Baptist Church. Born on January 17, 1905, in Kiev, Russia to Ewdokim and Yellena (Zubko) Bellous, he moved to Canada with his family in 1908. They eventually settled on a homestead north of Hyas. He attended school in Hyas. On June 20, 1933, he married Ann Panchuk and they celebrated their 70th anniversary last June. Predeceased by his parents, two brothers, George and Andrew Bellows and a sister, Nettie Ostafichuk, he is survived by his wife, Ann; a son Wayne (Valdene) of Hyas; four daughters, Janice (Bill) Lorenzen of Lantzville, BC. Sonia Belous of Whistler, BC, Gayle Belous of Lethbridge, Iona Belous of Lantzville, BC.,; three brothers, Peter (Mary) Bellows of Hyas, Mike of Saskatoon and Wilfred of Hyas; five sisters, Annie Kachman of Hyas, Polly Serdachny of Stenen, Diane Boresenko of Toronto, Mary Larame of Winnipeg and Lillian Bellows of Hyas; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. BELOUS � Dan Belous, 70 of Detroit, Mich. and formerly of the Stenen district, died on October 8, 1991 at Stenen. Funeral service held from the Stenen Community Hall and burial in the Stoney Creek Cemetery, east of Stenen. Born March 29, 1921 at Stenen, he was the son of Alex and Nadazda (Shostal) Belous. He attended Stenen School and then worked for the CNR. He later worked as a fire stoker on a ship on the Great Lakes. At the age of 26, he became a locomotive engineer with N.Y. Central Rail. He became an American citizen in 1961. He worked with the Rail Company until his retirement in 1989. Predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Paul, Wesley and George; two sisters, Nettie Smith and Anna Belous, he is survived by a brother Pete of San Francisco; four sisters, Sheila Pacheco and Mable Goodman, both of San Francisco, Edith Leus of Duncan, BC and Frances Williams of Salisbury, South Rhodesia. BELOUS � Nadazda Belous was born near Kiev Russia in 1886 and came to Canada in 1903 with her mother Paraska Shostal and a sister Fedora and brother-in-law Fred Zubko. She married Nikita (Alex) Belous on May 2, 1903. They came to the Stoney Creek district and homesteaded. Her children were sons, Paul, Peter, Wesley, Dan and George and daughters, Nettie, Francis, Anna, Edith, Mabel and Sheila. In 1956 they retired and moved closer to Stenen. CROTENKO � Carpo Crotenko was born April 2, 1880 in Kiev, Russia and immigrated to Canada in 1903. He first homesteaded near Arabella and then took land located two miles south west of Hyas. In 1906, he married Mikrena Lisoway. By 1909 they had 23 acres cropped. In later years, Carpo raised sheep. They raised four sons, Pete, Mike, Nick and Daniel and a daughter Nina. Carpo passed away May 10, 1952 CROTENKO � Dan. Born 1913 died July 1967. Farmed � mile north of Hyas married Jennie Zubko. Had 3 children Donavon (Alice), Lawrence (Lena), Angeline (Don) Burge. CROTENKO � Jennie Caroline Crotenko, 82 of Moose Jaw and formerly of Stenen, died on November 25, 1999. Born on May 10, 1917 in Stenen, she operated Sunrise Greenhouses in Hyas and supplied bedding plants for many people in the area. Employed as a floral designer in Cleveland and Vancouver, she volunteered to make wedding arrangements for friends and relatives. She was an active Jehovah�s Witness. Predeceased by her husband, Daniel, a son, Lawrence, two brothers, Fred and Peter an a sister Kay, she is survived by a son, Donovan (Alice) of Moose Jaw; a daughter, Angeline (Don) Burge of Cleveland; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. CROTENKO � Helen Crotenko, 82 of Hyas, died November 24, 2008 in the Preeceville Hospital. Born September 3, 1926 to Fred and Annie (Hanchar) Spivak at the family farm near Hyas. She attended Lake Helen School. In 1943 she went to Winnipeg and worked at a restaurant and then at a Bindery that made Eaton�s catalogues. She then returned to the family farm to help her parents. On July 28, 1945, she married Nick Crotenko. Helen and Nick farmed the Crotenko family farm growing grain, raising sheep, cattle, pigs and poultry. Helen milked the cows and sold the cream as her wages. With the rest of the cream and milk she made her own cheddar cheese, cottage cheese and butter. In 1980, Nick and Helen received a heritage award recognizing 75 years of family farming. Helen was an avid vegetable and flower gardener. She had a small green house and started her own plants. She enjoyed cooking at which she excelled. She curled in her younger years and was a member of the Homemakers Club and the Horticulture Club. She crocheted, knitted and made a lot of satin quilts for her family. Nick passed away in 1991 and Helen remained on the farm until Oct 2002, at which time she moved to Hyas. When she could drive she would go to Norquay and make perogies at the lodge there and became a member of the Perogie Mafia! Helen was predeceased by her husband Nick, her sisters Pauline Robinson, Nina Boyce and Betty Sorochuk and her brother Vern Spivak. She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter Valerie (Don) Steciuk of Preeceville and their children Kevin and Lisa; great grandchildren Nicolas and William and Emily and Morgan;her son Ken (Barb) of Grandview, MB and his children Kali and Kristi; her sister, Judy (Ron) Gray of Wawota CROTENKO � Nick Crotenko. Born Feb 11,1921 died May 1990. Farmed the family farm 2 miles southwest of Hyas. Went to Ulric and Hyas schools. On July 28, 1945 he married Helen Spivak at Hyas. He continued to farm the family farm, he raised Cattle as well as helping his brother Dan in his farming operation. He enjoyed curling and Hunting in his spare time. He had 2 children Valerie(Don) Steciuk and Kenneth (Theresa). CROTENKO � Mokrena (nee Lisoway) Crotenko was born in Aug of 1890 moving to Canada in 1903. She Married Carpo Crotenko in 1906 at Hyas, they bought a farm 2 miles south west of Hyas. She got her naturalization papers September 27, 1910. She belonged to the Homemakers club. She died in 1957 in August on her 67th birthday. She and Carpo raised 5 children Pete, Mike, Nick Nina Acerra, and Daniel. DAVIS � Andrew Davis was born in Russia in 1900 to parents, George and Laura (Dowychenko) Davis. He came to Canada with his parents, sisters, Annie, Susie and Dora and brother Fred in March 1903. The family homesteaded east of Stenen. Andrew became a policeman in the United States, where he worked with the Detroit City police Force for a number of years, until his death in 1931. DAVIS � Carol Davis of Preeceville, passed away on August 8, 2013 at the age of 86. She was born November 8, 1926 in Cook County, Illinois to parents Harriet and S. R. Davis. She was the only girl among five brothers. The family grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. Her brothers recall that she worked as hard on the farm as they did. Carol graduated with a BA from Northwestern University in St. Paul Minnesota. She taught one year in the USA and then moved to Canada to follow God�s call to teach first nations children. She met Lillian Bellows at the Cree Language school in Meadow Lake following which they were both sent by Northern Canada Evangelical Mission to South Indian Lake, MB. She then taught in Brandon while Lillian completed a teaching certificate, which allowed them to teach at Oxford House, MB for several years. When Lillian returned to the farm, Carol joined her and continued to teach in various towns in the area. She called Canada home and enjoyed farm life for many years prior to relocating to Preeceville in 2011. Carol was predeceased in death by her parents and brothers, Sylvester and Fred. She is survived by her friend in Christian service and life, Lillian Bellows as well as brothers, Richard (Marilyn) of Sundance, Wyoming, Garland (Vivian) Davis of L�Anse, Michigan and Bruce (Leslie) Davis of Whitefish Montana. She was adopted and loved by the large Bellows family and is fondly remembered by them and many others. An interment of cremated remains took place on Sept. 27th at the Stoney Creek Cemetery. DAVIS � Don Davis of Yorkton and formerly of Stenen, passed away on March 30, 2009 at the Regina General Hospital, at the age of 69 years. Donald Fred Davis was born on December 7, 1939 to Fred and Lena Davis. Accompanied by his brother John, both joined the family circle that already included sister Juanita. They lived in the Liverpool district on the Jarnigan farm until their move in 1948 two miles north to the homestead of Fred�s parents. Don attended Liverpool School, Stenen Elementary and the Sturgis Composite School, graduating in 1959. He sought employment in Snow Lake, MB as a miner from 1959 to 1961. He located to Calgary in 1961 and worked for Heiland Exploration until 1967 on a seismic recording crew where he soon advanced to the position of shooter handling all explosions, first in central Alberta and eventually in the North West Territories at Norman Wells and Fort Good Hope. In 1967, he underwent surgery for a back fusion at Calgary General Hospital, where he met Violet May Anderson, a registered nurse, whom he married on November 14, 1969. He worked for the Co-operators from 1974 to 1984 in Calgary. Since then he was self-employed. His oldest son Troy Jeffery was born on January 31, 1972 and Colin Andrew was born October 30, 1975. After Vi�s death from ALS in 2002, he moved to Midale, SK where he purchased a home. In 2003 he moved to Stenen and purchased a house and then to Yorkton in 2005. On March 9th he was taken by ambulance to the Yorkton Health Centre and on March 24th was transferred to Regina General Hospital, where he peacefully succumbed to pneumonia on March 30th. Predeceased by his wife Vi in 2002; his father Fred in 1989 and mother Lena in 2004 and a sister in infancy, he is survived by sons, Troy (Tanya) and their children, Ethan, Jaedon and Bethany of Edmonton and Colin (Alithea) and daughters Mei-Lyn and Alena of Calgary; sister Juanita (Paul) Juneau of Saskatoon; twin brother John of Stenen; special friend Edith Podovinikoff of Yorkton. Funeral service was held in the Grace United Church in Sturgis and interment at the Stoney Creek Cemetery by Stenen. DAVIS � Fred Davis, 86 of Stenen, passed away on March 23, 1989 in St. Paul Hospital in Saskatoon. Funeral service was held in Grace United Church in Sturgis. Born on February 25, 1903, in the village of Pohribi near Kiev, Russia, to George and Laura Davis, and shortly after his birth the family immigrated to Canada, settling on a farm in the Stenen district. Attending school at Crystal Lake and Canora, he later worked on the family farm and for Earl Jarnegan, a farmer five miles south of the Davis home. In 1925, he rented the Jarnegan farm and remained there until the fall of 1948. On September 16, 1932, he married Lena Karchie in St. Andrew United Church at Yorkton and in the fall of 1948 they moved to the family homestead, which he purchased and farmed until 1984, when he retired. In addition to farming, he worked for other farmers and on an elevator construction crew. He enjoyed making rocking chairs and stools, reading and blacksmithing. Predeceased by a daughter in infancy, his father in 1936, his mother in 1946, three brothers, Andrew in 1931, Peter in 1967 and Johnny in 1931 and six sisters, two in infancy, Fanny in 1919, Annie Krotenko in 1925, Susan Meeko in 1969 an Dora Eljoke in 1983, he is survived by his wife Lena; twin sons, Donald (Vi) of Calgary and John of Stenen; a daughter, Juanita (Paul) Juneau of Saskatoon; two brothers, Phillip (Margaret) of Regina and Michael (Ena) of St. Catherines, ON and three grandchildren. DAVIS � Lena (nee Karchie) Davis, 96 of the Stenen district, passed away on February 23, 2004 at the Canora Hospital. Funeral service was held at Grace United Church in Sturgis. She was born on October 10, 1907, in the Lady Lake district to John and Anna (Postiloti) Karchie. She helped with the farm work from a very early age. In 1918, the Karchie family moved to a farm on the outskirts of Sturgis and she worked for a number of families in the district. Being the eldest daughter in the family, she assumed the role of midwife when her mother gave birth to her younger siblings. On September 16, 1932, she married Fred Davis at St. Andrew�s United Church in Yorkton. They farmed southeast of Stenen. In 1948, the family moved two miles north to the homestead of Fred�s parents. Following the death of her husband in 1989, she continued to live on the farm with the help of her son, John. She was a member of the Wilson Memorial United Church in Stenen, the Grace United Church in Sturgis. She was the prayer chairperson for Grace United. She was a member of the Sturgis READ Club, the Sturgis Horticultural Society and the Senior Citizens Dew-Drop in Centre in Stenen. Actively involved with the Stenen UCW, she was recognized as the oldest member of the member with most years of service. She entered the Canora Hospital in October, first in acute care, and then as a long-term resident. Predeceased by her husband Fred, her parents, John and Anna, a daughter in infancy, three brothers, Bill, Nick and Mike and nine sisters, Mary Georgica, Christina Erickson-McCutheon, Florrie Budnick, Lila Wyman, Rose Nowell, Eva Bozak, Elizabeth Lundgren, Alice Karchie and Annie Chan, she is survived by two sons, Donald and John, both of Stenen; a daughter, Juanita (Paul) Juneau of Saskatoon, and three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. DEDUKE - Elaine Jeanette Irene (nee Westerlund) Deduke passed away peacefully at Eaglestone Lodge on July 13th, 2012, at the age of 91 years. Elaine was born on October 12th, 1920, on the family farm to Levi and Hulda (Fryckholm) Westerlund and was the youngest of eight children. With her brother Earl, Elaine started school in the Hyas district. They traveled with a brown mule named Queeny that pulled a two wheeled cart and later on they delivered milk to town with a white mule pulling the same cart. Elaine loved to cook and in her earlier years she always had a big garden. She was very proud of her Swedish heritage and Christian upbringing. Elaine met the love of her life, Dan, and they were married on December 18th, 1950. Dan and Elaine lived and farmed on the Westerlund homestead, where they had a mix of grain and cattle farming. As her health failed, Elaine spent the last three years of her life at Eaglestone Lodge in Kamsack, SK. In December 2010, Dan and Elaine celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in a beautiful celebration with family and friends at Eaglestone Lodge. After Dan’s passing, Elaine continued to live in the Eaglestone Lodge, enjoying the company of her friends there, especially Ann, her roommate. Elaine was predeceased by her husband, Dan; parents, Levi and Hulda; sisters: Amy, Violet, and Florence; and her brothers: Raymond, Walter and Clifford. Elaine will be deeply missed by her brother Earl (Olive) of Regina, SK, as well as numerous neices, nephews, and many friends. A Funeral Service was held on July 17th, 2012, at 1:00 P.M. from the Chapel of Leson's Funeral Home with Pastor John Froese officiating. Interment followed in the Stoney Creek Cemetery, between Stenen and Hyas, SK. HANCHAR � Annie Hanchar, age 86 of Hyas, passed away on April 22, 1969 in the Yorkton Union Hospital. Funeral was held in the Hyas Baptist Church and burial in the Stenen Cemetery. She was born in the Ukraine in 1883; she married John Hanchar there in 1903. She came to Canada in 1912 and with her husband, settled in the Hyas district. They farmed there until 1947 and then retired. Predeceased by her husband in 1965, Mrs. Hanchar is survived by five sons, John of Yorkton, Pete of Flin Flon, Nick of Chicago, Mike of Hyas and Bill of Winnipeg; five daughters, Annie Spivak of Hyas, Thelma Larson of Prinnghar, Iowa, Dorothy Shostal and Alice Moore of Norquay and Leona Heshka of Winnipeg; 37 grandchildren and 61 great-grandchildren. HANCHAR � Peter Hanchar, 87 of Canora, passed away December 3, 2001 at the Gateway Lodge in Canora. Funeral service was held at Leson�s Funeral Home and burial in Stoney Creek Cemetery, near Stenen. Born on October 23, 1914, in the Danbury district to John and Annie (Sawchuk) Hanchar, he attended Danbury School. In 1934, he married Isabel Magdee. He farmed near Danbury until 1966, when he moved to Flin Flon. He worked at various jobs in Flin Flon. He worked in a sawmill, cooked and was a butcher before working with the parks board for the city. He retired in 1980 to Creighton. Predeceased by his parents, John and Annie, his wife Isabel, three brothers, John, Nick and Bill, and three sisters, Anne Spivak, Thelma Larson and Dorothy Shostal, he is survived by a son, Wilfred of Winnipeg; five daughters, Janet (Joe) Mueller of Pinawa, MB, Bernice (Alex) Yanchuk of Portage La Prairie, MB Lorraine (Warren) Malischewski of Canora, Rose (Ernie) Richardson of Snow Lake, MB and Edie (Bruce) Henry of Winnipeg; a brother, Mike of Yorkton; two sisters, Alice Moore of Winnipeg and Leona Heshka of Winnipeg and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. KACHMAN � Lesley Jean (nee Baptie) Kachman, 52, of Hyas, died on March 17, 1995 at St. Paul�s Hospital in Saskatoon. Born on June 10, 1942, in Canmore, AB, to George and Ivy (Ashley) Baptie, she attended elementary school in Exshaw. When she was 13 years old, her family moved to Edmonton and she completed her schooling at Bonnie Doon High School. On November 24, 1962, she married Donald Kachman in Edmonton. They lived in Edmonton for six years before moving to farm in the Hyas area in 1968. She worked with several community organizations. She worked in the school, with the community college, the skating club and in the rural municipality office. She was involved with the Hyas Baptist Church, where she was parish secretary and taught Sunday school. Predeceased by her parents and two brothers, Gary and Marshall (in infancy), she is survived by her husband, Don; a son, Brent of Hyas; three daughters, Shelley (Rod) Thiessen of Hyas, Kerri (Darren) Wyman of Minneapolis, Minn., and Jaime Kachman of Hyas; two sisters, Fran (Don) McTaggart of Canmore, AB and Susan (Reg) Peacock of Calgary; and six grandchildren. KACHMAN � William B. Kachman, 93 of Hyas, died September 16, 1996 at the Norquay Health Centre. Funeral held at the Hyas Baptist Church. Born on November 18, 1902, in Overstone, MB, to John and Mary (Prokopchuk) Kachman, he received his education in Overstone. On June 27, 1931, he married Anne Bellows in Hyas and they farmed in the Hyas area. In 1948, they moved to Hyas and besides farming, they operated W.B. Kachman & Sons General Store. Later, the business became a Massey Ferguson dealership and also dealt in used machinery and parts. He retired in 1981 but they continued to live in Hyas. He was an active member of the Hyas Baptist Church. Predeceased by his parents, a grandson, Billy Roy Bjorndahl, two brothers, Andrew in infancy and Peter, and a sister, Annie Slobodian, he is survived by his wife, Anne of Hyas; two sons, Don of Hyas and Johnny (Lois) of Preeceville; three daughters, Violet (Richard) Darling of Toronto, Gloria (Gary) Bjorndahl of Calgary and Eileen (Don) Radu of Calgary; a brother, Mike (Esther) of Edmonton; four sisters, Nettie Bellows of Hyas, Mary (Peter) Bellows of Hyas, Chris Harkins of Bradenton, Florida and Ruth Saunders of Vancouver; 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. KLOCHKO � Marfa "Mary" T. Klochko, died in the Canora Hospital, after a long illness, in 1969. Born in the Ukraine in 1886, she married Terenty Klochko there in 1906. They came to Canada in 1928, settling in the Stenen district, where they farmed for 20 years. They lived at Vancouver for a year and at Grand Forks for four years. They moved to Canora in June from Toronto. Besides her husband, she is survived by a son Bill of Vancouver; a daughter Mrs. Jack Kemp of Toronto; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A daughter Mary died in the Ukraine in 1967. KROTENKO � Annie Krotenko was born in 1893, the eldest daughter of Proker (George) and Laura Dowychenko. She came from Russia to Canada with her family when she was nine years old. In 1911, she married Kost Krotenko and they settled on a homestead north of Stenen. Their children were Nancy, Ella, Lena, Louis and Samuel. Annie was ill for some years with a rheumatic heart condition, passed away in 1926, leaving five children ages 2 to 13. KROTENKO � Ivy Krotenko was born on September 8, 1927, to John and Anne (Zaichkowski) Nesdoly, in Blaine Lake, SK. As a young girl Ivy attended the Blaine Lake School until grade eight. She worked at an egg grading station and a retail store. She could add a column of numbers like we use a calculator. She married Louis Krotenko July 1, 1951. The family lived on a farm south of Stenen until 1998, when they moved to Yorkton. Ivy was involved in the Hyas Baptist Church, the ladies group, youth group, Sunday school and choirs. She directed many Christmas concerts and cantatas. She was well known for her beautiful gardens and flowers on the farm, she showed entries in the Horticulture shows and took home many trophies for her entries. Ivy was predeceased by her parents, John and Anne and her husband, Louis in 2005. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Marianne (Ej) Foley of Calgary, Edwin (Lynn) Krotenko of Canora and Ellen Krotenko of Yorkton; a sister Esther in Ft. Worth, Texas and her brother, Samuel in Victoria, BC. KROTENKO � Kost Krotenko, age 95, died on August 25, 1977 in the Yorkton Hospital. Funeral service was held at the Hyas Baptist Church. Born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1882, he came to Canada in 1909 and settled in the Stenen district and farmed until 1960, when he retired and moved to Canora. In 1974, he moved to Toronto and then returned to Canora and then moved to Yorkton in 1977. Predeceased by his first wife, Annie Dowichenko in 1926 and his second wife Paraska (Trofimchuk) in 1967 and a grandson, Lynn Krotenko in 1968, he is survived by 5 sons, Louis, Joseph and Harry of Stenen, Sam of Melville and James of Prince George; six daughters, Nancy, Ella, Len, Lilly, Elizabeth and Leone; 25 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. KROTENKO � Samuel H. Krotenko, 77 of Melville and formerly of Stenen and Canora passed away September 9, 2001. Born July 16, 1924 in the Stenen district to Kosten and Ann (nee Davecenko) Krotenko, he attended school in Stenen and then joined the army in 1944, serving as a heavy artillery mechanic and driver. After his discharge he spent a year at Briercrest, then moved to Canora where he opened Canora Autobody. In 1952, he married Mary Kazakoff. In 1969, he achieved his inter-provincial journeyman�s papers to become a high school teacher of mechanics and carpentry. He moved to Melville in 1975 and retired from teaching in 1989. Predeceased by his father in 1977, mother in 1926, a son Lynn in 1968 and a sister Nancy in 2001, he is survived by his wife; two daughters, Ruth (Stewart) Fauser of Edmonton and Esther (Tyrone) Schneider of Calgary; one son, Allan of Winnipeg; four brothers, Louis of Yorkton, Joe of Preeceville, Jim of Prince George, BC and Harry of Stenen; five sisters, Ella Maksuta of Yorkton, Lena Jacobson of McVille, N.D. Lily Shykowsky of Edmonton, Elizabeth Lausman of Yorkton and Leona Kuzuska of Sturgis; four grand children an one great-grandchild. KROTENKO � Louis Krotenko, 83 of Yorkton and formerly of the Stenen area, died on February 20, 2005 at his residence. Born in the Stenen district on September 12, 1921 to Kost and Annie (Dowichenko) Krotenko, he attended Stenen School. He helped to raise his younger siblings after his mother died. On July 1, 1951, he married Ivy Nesdoly at Blaine Lake. They established a farm site about a half-mile from where he grew up. They farmed until 1993 and in 1998, they moved to Yorkton. Predeceased by his parents, Kost and Annie, a brother Sam and two sisters, Nancy Tederoff and Ella Maksuta, he is survived by his wife, Ivy; a son, Edwin (Lynn) Krotenko of Canora; two daughters, Marianne Foley of Calgary and Ellen Nistor of Yorkton; three brothers, Joe (Kathy) of Preeceville, Harry (Audrey) of Stenen and Jim (Elsie) of Prince George, BC; four sisters, Lena Jacobson of McVille, N.D., Lillian (Peter) Shykowski of Edmonton, Elizabeth Lausman of Yorkton and Leona (Orest) Kozuska of Yorkton; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. LISOWAY � Adam Lisoway, 81 of Stenen, passed away May 27, 2002 at the Norquay Health Centre. Funeral service held at Grace United Church in Sturgis. Born on July 3, 1920 in the Stenen district to Anthony and Dora Lisoway, he attended the George Albert School. He farmed and worked for a logging company. On September 12, 1953, he married Olga Balycky in Danbury and they moved to their own homestead, north of Stenen. Besides farming, he raised cattle. He continued looking after his cattle until last Jan when his health began to fail. Predeceased by his parents, four sisters, Laura Shipowich, Kate Garrow, Anne Batycki and Margaret Pakosh, and five brothers, Jim, George, Pat, Thomas and Frank, he is survived by his wife, Olga; two sons, Lawrence (Phyllis) of Preeceville and Brielle (Michelle) of Yorkton; four daughters, Angele (Don) Hynd of Vanderhoof, BC, Sherri (Blake) Ritchie of The Pas, Celestine (Dave) Denhoff of Turner Valley, AB., and Olette (Pat) Stefanowich of Turner Valley; a brother, Victor of Stenen; a sister, Vina Kopelchuk of Donwell and 12 grandchildren. LISOWAY � Anton Lisoway was born in the Kiev district of Russia in 1849. At the age of 54, he came to Canada, with his wife Ofalia, their sons, Anton Jr., Tom, Fred, Nick and daughter Mikrena in 1903. In 1905, Anton applied for a homestead located northwest of Hyas. During the next four years the family prospered acquiring cattle and horses and building a barn and granaries. On October 8, 1910 Anton received patent for his homestead. After his wife passed away in 1925, Anton moved in with his son, Fred and family. Anton passed away in 1937. LISOWAY � Frank Lisoway, age 67, of Stenen, passed away March 15, 1991 at his home. Funeral service was held in the Stenen Community Hall. Born on June 10, 1923 in the Stenen district, he was the son of Anthony and Dora (Zubko) Lisoway. He attended Stenen and Mikado Schools and Teachers College in Saskatoon. He first taught at Gold Bank School, north of Stenen and South Porcupine School, north of Danbury. He operated an implement and car dealership in Sturgis for about 10 years. In 1953, he married Alice Mattison at Calgary. They moved to Nanaimo, BC, where he worked for a lumber company for a few years. Then they moved to Brantford, ON, where he operated a service station and taught school. He also lived in Toronto for some time. He returned to Sask. and taught in Sturgis and Canora. When he retired he moved to the Stenen area. Predeceased by his parents; his wife, Alice and three sisters, Laura Shipowich, Kate Garrow and Anne Batycki, he is survived by a son, Dennis (Carol) of White City; six brothers, James of Hyas, George of Kelvington, Victor, Pat (Eva) and Adam (Olga) all of Stenen and Thomas of Burnaby, BC; two sisters, Margaret (Steve) Pakosh of Toronto and Vina (Phillip) Kopelchuk of Donwell; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. LISOWAY � Fred (Fedor) Lisoway was born in 1887 in Russia. He came with his parents. Anton and Ofalia and siblings, to Canada in 1903 settling on a homestead in the Hyas district. He helped his parents on the farm and also worked out as a farm labourer to earn much needed money. He applied for his own homestead in 1908; about four miles from Hyas and in 1913 received a certificate of title to the land. He and his wife Daria, had three sons, Paul, Fred and Peter. In the late 1960�s the family relocated to a new home a mile and a half away. Fred was a good farmer and enjoyed gardening and in time developed a small orchard and became proficient in raising bees. Fred suffered ill health and passed away in 1956. LISOWAY � James Lisoway, 86 of Hyas, died on January 25, 1993 at the Regina General Hospital. Funeral service held at the Hyas Community Hall, with Rev. Miles Russell officiating. Born on February 10, 1906 to Anton and Dora (Zubko) Lisoway in the Stenen district, he attended George Albert School. He worked on the family farm before buying his own land north of Danbury on which he began ranching. He also logged, trapped and hunted. He assisted the conservation officers in the area north of Danbury. In 1982, he retired and moved to Hyas. In his younger days, he was known as a great baseball player I the Hyas area. Predeceased by his parents, a brother, Frank, three sisters, Laura Shipowich, Kate Garrow and Anne Batycki, he is survived by five brothers, George of Kelvington, Thomas of Burnaby, and Victor, Pat (Eva) and Adam (Olga) of Stenen; two sisters, Margaret (Steve) Pakosh of Barrie, ON and Vina Kopelchuk of Donwell. LISOWAY � Ofalia Lisoway was born in 1857 in Russia. In 1903, the Lisoway family, father Anton and his wife Ofalia and sons, Anton Jr., Tom, Fred and Nick and a daughter, Mokrena, came to Canada. They settled temporarily in the Ulric District, while the men folk worked for established farmers in exchange for farm supplies, or for the railway company, On June 26, 1905, Anton applied for a homestead which was located five miles northwest of Hyas. They built a log house and the family moved there in April 1906. Ofalia passed away in 1925 and is buried in the Stoney Creek Cemetery. LISOWAY � Olga (nee Balysky) Lisoway was born on April 15, 1930 on the family farm in Glen Elder district to Mike and Lena (Demchuk) Balysky. As a young girl, she attended the South Porcupine School while helping her parents. She achieved her grad nine education. She helped teach Ukrainian after school to the younger kids. She cooked at the family sawmill as well as various restaurants/hotels and worked at the Swan River Hospital as a dietician. Olga met Adam Lisoway and they were married on September 12, 1953 on her family�s homestead. They resided in the Stenen district an Olga continued to live on the farm following Adam�s passing, before moving to Black Diamond in 2006. She enjoyed travelling, painting, ceramics, writing, cooking and gardening. She enjoyed being involved with the church choir and ladies auxiliary. She was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Olga passed away August 14, 2011. She was predeceased by her parents, Mike and Lena; her husband Adam; her son Lawrence; her brothers, Steve, John, Pete, Bill and Paul and her sister Mary Zinchuk. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Angele (Don) Hynd of Grande Prairie, AB, Sherri (Blake) Ritchie of Anzac, AB, Sally (Dave) Denhoff of Black Diamond, AB, Olette (Pat) Stefanowich of Turner Valley, AB an her son Brielle (Michelle) Lisoway of Turner Valley; twelve grandchildren an seven great-grandchildren; her sisters, Jennie Folwark of St. Albert. LISOWAY � Pat Lisoway, 83 of the Stenen district, passed away march 22, 1998 at his residence. Pat was born on May 31, 1914, to Anthony and Dora (Zubko) Lisoway in the Stenen district. He attended George Albert School. He logged for several years and worked on the family farm. In 1944, he went to work in Toronto and on April 14, 1945, he married Eva Bogucky in Toronto. They returned to Stenen to farm and he began a career in auctioneering, which lasted for about 40 years. He continued to farm until the end. He was a trustee of the George Albert School and was a committee ember of United Grain Growers. Predeceased by his parents, four brothers, Frank, James, George and Thomas, and three sisters, Laura Shipowich, Kate Garrow and Anne Batycki, he is survived by his wife Eva; two sons, Dale (Maureen) and Sheldon (Brenda) both of Stenen; four daughters, Valorie (Daryl) Kalenchuk of Sturgis, Arlene (Ken) Agar of Winnipeg; Marlene (Bert) Robinson of Nanaimo, BC and Colette (Richard Cobb) Lisoway of Halifax; two brothers, Victor and Adam (Olga) both of Stenen; two sisters, Margaret Pakosh of Kelowna an Vina Kopelchuk of Donwell; an 10 grandchildren. LISOWAY � Nick Lisoway, 76, a former resident of the Hyas district, died on June 3, 1969 in an Edmonton Hospital, after a long illness. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Russia, he came to Canada in 1905 with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Lisoway, an older brother Fred and a sister, Mikrena and they settled on a homestead north of Hyas. In 1916, Nick enlisted in the 46th Canadian Infantry in the First World War. He was wounded in action in France during the offensive of 1917 and after recuperating in Princess Patricia Hospital at Ramsgate, England, he saw further service on the continent. After his discharge in 1919, he lived at various points in Alberta. In the Second World War he enlisted in the Veteran�s Guard. After his discharge in 1945, he lived at Edmonton. Predeceased by his mother in 1925, his father in 1937, a brother Fred of Hyas in 1955, a brother Anton of Stenen in 1969 and a sister Mikrena Crotenko in 1957, he is survived by a brother John of Chico, Calif. LISOWAY � Tom Lisoway was born in the Ukraine in 1886. He and his wife Martha immigrated to Canada in 1912, along with two young sons, Fred and Phillip and homesteaded 2 miles south of Danbury. Three more children were born in Canada, Pete in 1916, Pauline 1918 and Mike in 1925. Tom passed away in 1945. LISOWAY � Victor Lisoway, age 93 of Kamsack, and formerly of the Stenen area, died on Feb. 18, 2006 at the Kamsack Nursing Home. Born on April 11, 1912, in the Stenen district to Anton and Dora (Zubko) Lisoway, he attended George Albert School. He continued to farm after his parents died. He raised cattle and honeybees and grew grain. He also raised many horses. He was an avid ball player in his younger days and enjoyed cross-country skiing. He remained on the farm until his health forced him to move to the Kamsack Nursing Home. Predeceased by his parents, Anton and Dora, six brothers, Jim, George, Pat, Adam, Tom and Frank, and four sisters, Laura Shipowich, Kate Garrow, Margaret Pakosh and Ann Batycki, he is survived by a sister, Vina Kopelchuk of Donwell. OSTAFICHUK � Nettie (nee Bellows) Ostafichuk, 95 of the Canora Gateway Lodge, passed away April 22, 1998 at the Canora Hospital. Funeral service held at Leson�s Funeral Home. Born on December 29, 1902 in Russia to Edward and Ellen (Zubko) Bellows, she emigrated to Canada in 1910 with her family, and settled in the Hyas district. She attended Hyas School. On January 23, 1921, she married George Ostafichuk in Hyas and they homesteaded one mile north of Hyas. She lived on the farm until August of 1997 when she became a resident of the Gateway Lodge. She was very active in her church. Predeceased by her parents, her husband, George, and two brothers, George and Andrew, she is survived by two sons, Andrew (Carol) of Hyas and Lawrence (Kathy) of Hyas; two daughters, Elsie Keller of Hyas and Evelyn Swerhone of Canora; four brothers, Anton, Peter (Mary) and Wilfred all of Hyas and Mike (Matilda) of Saskatoon; five sisters, Annie Kachman of Hyas, Polly Serdachny of Stenen, Diane Borisenko of Toronto, Mary Larimee of Winnipeg and Lillian Bellows of Hyas; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. SERDACHNY � Allan Serdachny, 54, of Hyas, died on April 24, 1999 at the Norquay Health Centre. Born on March 19, 1945 at Canora Hospital to John and Tena (Auramenko) Serdachny, he attended Hyas and Sturgis schools. He worked on the oil rigs in Swan Hills, AB. On September 21, 1965, he married Sonia Ostapowich and they made their home southwest of Hyas. Following in his father�s footsteps, he moved in grain and cattle farming. In 1970, he began working for the Norquay Auction Mart and so worked towards being a cattle buyer and auctioneer. In 1982, he became a co-owner of the Auction Mart. He later branched out into conducting farm auction sales. He was diagnosed with amyloidosis about three years ago. Predeceased by his father John and a daughter, Cheryl in infancy, he is survived by his wife, Sonia; two daughters, Sherry (Kim) Kowalchuk of Regina and Lovan (Morley) Statchuk of Trochu, AB; his mother, Tena of Hyas; two brothers, Leonard (Carol) of Regina and Edward of Hyas; a sister, Jocelyn (Harold) Gogol of Canora; and two grandchildren. SERDACHNY � John Serdachny, 84 of Hyas, passed away May 30, 1988 in the Norquay Hospital. Funeral service held in the Hyas Baptist Church. Born on February 29, 1904 in Ukraine, he came to Canada with his parents, Abraham and Olga, in 1912. He started farming on his own at 20 years of age at Hyas, and worked at the International Nickel Co. mine at Sudbury for a year. Besides farming he was a cattle buyer for over 30 years. He was baptized in his early years and was a founder and charter member of Hyas Baptist Church, helping in the construction of the church building. He married Tena Auramenko on March 20, 1941. He was hospitalized in the fall of 1986, and became a resident of the Norquay Gateway Lodge on June 16, 1987. Predeceased by his parents, a brother, George, an a granddaughter, Cheryl, he is survived by his wife, Tena; three sons, Leonard (Carol) of Regina, and Ed and Allan (Sonia) of Hyas; a daughter, Jocelyn (Harold0 Gogal of Canora; two brothers, Nick (Polly) of Stenen and Mike of Hyas; and eight grandchildren. SERDACHNY � Nick Serdachny, 89 of the Stenen area, died on March 6, 1996 at the Norquay Gateway Lodge. Funeral service held at the Hyas Baptist Church. Born on March 21, 1906 in Kiev, Ukraine to Abraham and Olga (Deduke), his family immigrated to Canada in 1912 and settled about six miles north of Hyas. He attended Danbury rural school. On June 28, 1935, he married Polly Bellows at the Hyas Baptist Church. They farmed north of Hyas until 1951, when they moved to a farm north of Stenen, in order to be closer to the Sturgis Composite High School. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in June of 1995. For the past year, he had resided at the Norquay Health Centre. He was among the founders of the Hyas Baptist Church. Predeceased by his parents and three brothers, George, John and Mike, he is survived by his wife, Polly; two sons, Nat (Dolores) of Edmonton and Larry (Linda) of Yorkton; four daughters, Alvera (Joe) Zolkavich of Saskatoon, Lovette Quattrucci of Calgary, Darlene (Eiko) Ohori of Prince George and Karen (Ross) Wilkinson of Regina; and 14 grandchildren. SHOSTAL � Dorothy (nee Hanchar) Shostal, 85 of the Gateway Lodge in Norquay, died on February 29, 1996 at the Lodge. Born on March 1, 1910 in Ukraine to John and Anne (Shewchuk) Hanchar. When her family planned the immigration to Canada, they were booked on the ship �Titanic�, but because of a paperwork error, left the next day on another ship to Canada. She, her mother, a brother and two sisters arrived in Canada in 1912 to join her father. They settled in the Hyas district and she attended Danbury Rural School. On February 23, 1929, she married Peter Shostal in Danbury and they farmed in the Hyas district until 1964, when they moved to Norquay. In 1990, she became a resident of the Gateway Lodge in Norquay. She was among the founding members of the Hyas Baptist church. Predeceased by her parents, husband Peter, grandson David Shostal, a sister Thelma Larsen and three brothers, John, Nick and Bill, she is survived by two sons, Alvin (Mary0 of Delisle, SK and Arthur (Nora) of Norquay; two brothers, Peter Hanchar of Canora and Mike Hanchar of Yorkton; three sisters, Annie Spivak of Norquay Gateway Lodge, Alice Moore of Winnipeg and Leona Heshka of Winnipeg; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. SHOSTAL � Nora Kathleen (nee Schultz) Shostal, beloved wife of Art Shostal of Norquay and formerly of Hyas, passed away peacefully at the Canora Hospital on January 11, 2007 at the age of 73 years. Nora was born in Rush Lake, SK on October 6, 1933 to Diedrich and Amanda (nee Brandt) Schultz and was the eldest of eight children. Nora accepted Jesus Christ into her life at the age of fifteen. From that day forward her faith in God grew stronger and her life was a reflection of that belief. She touched many lives both young and old and considered herself never too sick to be able to help someone else with a greater need. Nora attended school in Herbert, Bethania and Maple Creek. After graduating high school, she moved to Weyburn to work at the Sask. Hospital where she also received training as a registered psychiatric nurse. It was while working at the hospital that she was introduced to her future husband, Arthur and they married in November of 1955. After working in Weyburn for a number of years, Arthur, Nora and their two small children, in 1963 moved to Hyas to take over the family farm. She became actively involved in the Hyas Baptist Church as a Sunday school teacher and later as president of the church ladies group. Music was an important part of her life. Over a twelve year period, both Art and Nora opened their home to fourteen different foster children, each needing help in his or her own way. Left to rejoice in her with God is her husband of fifty-one years, Arthur; her children, Reg (Dianne), Bev (Stan) Hamm, Gwen, Geraldine, Garth (Crystal) Shostal, her niece Dawn (Michael) Gutek and her nephew, Dwayne Jenkins; her grandchildren, Amanda, Candace, Kara (Eric) Joella, Colin, Braden, Mackenzie, Joshua, Sarah, Rebecca and Shayla. She is also survived by her brothers, Richard (Anne) Schultz and Eldon (Joyce) Schultz; her sister, Viola (Albert) Patzer. Nora was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Mabel Byam, Carol Jenkins; her brothers, Elmer and Raymond and two grandsons. The funeral service was held from the Chapel of Leson�s Funeral Home. SHOSTAL � Paraska (nee Olynyk) Shostal, passed away on July 31, 1971 in the Kamsack Hospital. Funeral service was held in the Ukrainian Greek Church at Kamsack and burial in the family plot at Stenen. Paraska Olynyk, was born in 1898 in Western Ukraine and came with her parents to Canada in 1899. They settled SW of Canora and ten years later moved to a farm 5 miles south of Hyas. She attended Alric School and at Canora. In 1910 she married Petro Shostal and they farmed east of Stenen. In 1962, she moved to Kamsack. Predeceased by her husband in 1962, she is survived by a son Alex of Kamsack; daughter, Elizabeth DeBernedeth of Hamilton, Ontario; two sisters, Domka Kateryniuk of Winnipeg and Annie Wachniak of Gronlid, SK. SHOSTAL � Peter Shostal, 77, of Norquay, passed away November 11, 1980 in the Yorkton Union Hospital. Funeral service held in the Hyas Baptist Church and burial in the Stenen protestant Cemetery. He was born in the Ukraine and came to Canada in 1911 with his parents, who settled in the Hyas district. He married Dorthy Hanchar in 1929 and they farmed in the Hyas district. In 1964, they moved to Norquay, but he continued to farm with his son, Arthur, until 1979, when he retired. He served as councillor of the RM of Clayton for four years an he was a trustee and board chairman of Danbury School for many years. An honorary deacon of Hyas Baptist church, he was one of its founding members and served on its board for 30 years. Predeceased by his parents, Sam and Laura, a brother and a sister in infancy, and two brothers, Alex in 1968 and Bill in 1971, he is survived by his wife; two sons, Alvin of Delisle and Arthur of Hyas; two brothers, Mike of Canora and Nick of Hyas; a sister, Annie Wozney of Regina and nine grandchildren. SPIVAK � Vern Fredrick Spivak, 71 of the Hyas area, passed away August 9, 2004 at the Kamsack Hospital. Born on September 9, 1932, to Fred and Annie (Hanchar) Spivak on the family farm in the Hyas district, he attended Lake Helen School. As a young man, he worked on threshing crews during harvest and spent many winters at a sawmill, logging or hauling rails or wood. In the fall of 1956, he worked at Swift�s Meatpacking plant in Vancouver. He also worked for Boychuk Construction in Saskatoon. On May 30, 1970, he married Stephia Harasem and they settled on a farm in the Hyas district. Predeceased by his parents, Fred and Annie, three sisters, Pauline Robinson, Nina Boyce and Betty Sorochuk, he is survived by his wife, Stephia; a son, Sheldon (Teresa) Spivak of Kamsack; two daughters, Debbie (Allan) Widenmaier of Swan River and Laureen Spivak of Kamsack; two sisters, Helen Crotenko of Hyas and Judy (Ron) Gray of Wawota and one grandson. ZUBKO � Charlene Danette Zubko, 21 of Banff and a former Stenen resident, was found dead, apparently murdered, in a Vancouver hotel room on October 21, 1980. She was born in Canora in 1959 and attended Stenen primary school and Sturgis High School. Upon completing her education, she took training as a hairdresser at Regina. Prior to the time of her death, she was employed as a hairdresser at Banff. Predeceased by a sister Donna in infancy and a brother, Donald Balycky; she is survived by her parents, Dan and Anne Zubko of Stenen; two brothers, Darcy of Stenen and Ken Balycky of Regina; two sisters, Jennifer and Christine, both of Stenen. ZUBKO � Dan Zubko, age 72 of Preeceville and formerly of Stenen, died in the Saskatoon Royal University Hospital on September 30, 1999. Funeral service was held at the Preeceville Funeral Home, with Eugene Bobyk of the Jehovah�s Witnesses officiating. Born in Stenen on December 4, 1926 to John and Mary Zubko, he attended school in Stenen and a short course in agriculture in Norquay. Dan farmed at Stenen for more than 40 years, with brief work periods away from his home in Thompson and Wabowden, MB and on the DEW line in NWT. He drove the school bus for the Timberline School Division from 1975 until his retirement in 1991. He was a long-time member of the Sask. Wheat Pool, credit Union, and wildlife association. Predeceased by his parents and three daughters, he is survived by his wife Anne; son, Darcy (Bonnie); daughter, Christine (Rocky); four grandchildren; a twin brother, Arthur (Gloria) of Kelowna; three sisters, Norma (Keith) Kavanagh of Kanata, ON. Jenny (David) Arnott of Guelph, ON. and Shirley (Merv) Talbot of Yorkton. ZUBKO � Donna Zubko, born and died on July 16, 1955. She was the daughter of Dan and Anne Zubko of Stenen. ZUBKO � John Zubko, 94 of Norquay, died on February 26, 1996 at the Norquay Health Centre. Funeral held at the Stenen Community Hall with Allan Lenych of the Jehovah�s Witnesses officiating. Bon on September 11, 1901 near Kiev, Ukraine, he came to Canada in 1903 with his parents, Fred and Theodora (Shostal) Zubko and they made their homestead northeast of Stenen. As the oldest of the children, he attended school only long enough to learn to read and write in English. During his early adulthood, he made several trips to California where he worked at odd jobs. He toured on an Indian Motorcycle. In 1925, he married Mary Fesyk of Hyas and they settled on a farm east of Stenen. They retired in 1971. His wife died in 1988 and four years later he moved to the senior�s residence in Norquay. He served on various committees, including the Sask. Wheat Pool, Telephone, credit Union and school boards. Predeceased by his parents, his wife Mary, three brothers, Alex, Peter and William, three sisters, Itla Beverly, Elda Burns and Nettie Kaminski and two granddaughters, Charlene Zubko and Jennifer Oxley, he is survived by two sons, Dan (Anne) of Preeceville and Arthur (Gloria) of Winnipeg; three daughters, Norma (Keith) Kabanagh of Kanata, ON, Jenny (David) Arnott of Guelph, ON and Shirley (Merv) Talbot of Yorkton; three brothers, Fred of Stenen, Walter (Ruth) of Stenen and Victor (Lenore) of Calgary; a sister, Mary Lishman of Secelt, BC; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. ZUBKO � Mary Zubko, 81 of Stenen, passed away November 29, 1988 in the Yorkton Hospital. Funeral held in the Stenen Community Hall, with Cornelius Richerts officiating. Mary Fesyk was born April 7, 1907, in the RM of Clayton and was educated at Hyas. She married John Zubko in June of 1925 at Canora. They farmed in the Stenen district, where she was a member of the Stenen Homemakers Club and was active in the United Church and Women�s Auxiliary. She was a member of Jehovah�s Witness for several years. Predeceased by three brothers, George, John and Mike Fesyk, and two sisters, Helen Gogal and Neta Holm, she is survived by her husband, John; two sons, Dan of Stenen and Arthur of Scarborough; three daughters, Norma of Ottawa, Jenny of Guelph, ON and Shirley of Yorkton; one brother, Bill Fesyk; two sisters, Sophie Yatsura of Hyas and Anne Yurkiw of Norquay; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. ZUBKO � Walter Zubko was born on May 8, 1929 on his parent�s farm east of Stenen. This would remain his home for the remainder of his life. Walter was the youngest of 11 children born to Fred and Fedora Zubko. Walter took on adult responsibilities on the farm at the age of 14, after the death of his father. Walter married Ruth Washburn in Wilson Memorial United Church in Stenen on November 5, 1954. Together they lived and worked on the farm, raising cattle, horses, chickens and grain, milking cows by hand for many years. Walter was known for his love of cattle and horses. On the farm he had many skills with livestock and machinery. He was active in many organizations including the Stenen Wheat Pool Committee as chairman, Stenen Recreation Board, Yorkton Livestock Committee, Ducks Unlimited, Sask. Wildlife Federation, coaching ball and helping with hockey when his children were young, and playing on baseball and hockey teams as well as curling. Walter was part of the Stenen Baseball Club that was inducted into the Sask. Baseball Hall of Fame at Battleford, SK in 1995. Walter was very proud of the three recognition�s received over the years concerning the farm remaining in the same family. The most recent being the 100 Years recognition from the Province in 2003. Walter loved fishing and hunting, sports and visiting with others. His commitment to family, friends and his community was a priority. Walter is lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Ruth; their five children, Lonnie (LeeAnn), Kelly (Roxanne), Lorene (Colleen), Rhonda (Darren) and Warren (Elena); grandchildren, Amanda, Brittney, Cody, Cara, Jordan and Ethan; his brother, Vic (Lenore); and sister Mary Lishman. Walter was predeceased by his parents, and his brothers, John, Bill, Fred, Pete and Alex and sisters, Nettie, Elda and Ida. ZUBKO � Fred Zubko Jr., age 96 of the Canora Gateway Lodge and formerly of Stenen, died on March 6, 2003. Fred was born on September 3, 1906 near Stenen and farmed with his brother Walter, until 1974, when he retired and moved into Stenen. Predeceased by four brothers, Alex, Pete, Bill and John; three sisters, Ida, Elda and Nettie, he is survived by two brothers, Victor (Lenore) of Calgary and Walter (Ruth) of Stenen; one sister, Mary of Vernon, BC. |
