In 1942, Amos married Betty Jacqueline Hopkins who came to teach at Levant School in 1938. They were blessed with three children - Ronald, Geoffrey and Anne. Amos's life was mixed farming. Nanna attended Normal School in Saskatoon and taught in the era of the one-room schoolhouse. While teaching at Mimer she met and married Johannes (Joe) Olafson. Theirs was a lifetime partnership in raising a family, farming, community involvement, and overseas development work. Mom was fiercely devoted to her family, and was unconditionally supportive of us all. Her grandchildren dearly loved their Amma and looked forward to the gatherings of family and friends which Mom promoted at the drop of a hat. Her consideration of others extended beyond her immediate and extended families. She was very involved in community activities, and her community extended from the Dafoe, Kandahar and Wynyard districts to as far away as Belize and Tanzania. Mom was very proud of her Icelandic heritage and culture, and she dedicated considerable time and energy to its promotion and preservation. One project dear to her heart was the dedication of the Wynyard Unitarian Church as a heritage site. Raised in a large family during the depression, Nanna developed a social conscience which expressed itself in her involvement in the cooperative movement and in politics with the CCF and the NDP (She was very proud of her life membership in the NDP). Nanna was a committed pacifist and declared her home a nuclear-free zone. She performed many nontraditional duties to support her family and community. Nanna served on numerous committees and was a board member of several non-profit and community organizations. She was a life-long member and supporter of the Unitarian Church. Nanna's artistic side was expressed in such things as her singing, crocheting, knitting, ceramics and pottery. Mom loved baking, and it wasn't unusual to hear her singing while creating her world renowned pastries. She took pride in her huge garden that fed a family of 7. Her flowers were a vision to behold.
