Old Wooden Meeting House
Barrington, Nova Scotia

This meeting house, built by the original grantees in 1765, is the oldest non-conformist Protestant meeting house in Canada. The first minister, Rev. Samuel Wood, a Congregationalist, served for five years. The first Methodist minister, Freeborn Garretson, preached there in 1786. An intriguing feature of this meeting house was the placement of sun dials on the eastern and western gables. It was said that people would know the noon hour from afar by the flash of the sun on the western gable.
