St. John's Anglican Church
Lunenburg, Nova Scotia
The first settlers of the area erected this small church in 1754. It is the oldest church in Lunenburg and the second-oldest non-Roman Catholic church in British North America. Anglicans, Lutherans, Presbyterians, Baptists, Roman catholics and a number of Micmac Indians all worshipped in this first church of Lunenburg. The first minister, Rev. Jean Baptiste Moreau, preached in English, French and German. In 1870, the Church was expanded and remodeled and in 1875, the church tower was added. At various times over the years, the original edifice has been enlarged, beautified and enhanced by magnificent stained glass windows.
