At an early hour on Thursday morning Jan. 5, 1950, there passed peacefully away at her home at Petite Riviere, Maude Lavinia, beloved wife of Charles J. Hall. Although some months previous to her passing, she had endured a short period of illness, during which time she was tenderly cared for by her daughter, Mabel, she had apparently recovered and was attending to her usual household duties. It was, therefore, a distinct shock to her relatives and many friends to learn of her very sudden passing. Born at Windsor, N.S., Nov. 13, 1871, the late Mrs. Hall was the daughter of the late Rev. J. L. R. Smith and Mrs. Smith. Her father became rector of the parish of Petite Riviere about 50 years ago, and it might be truly said that during his long period; of faithful service in that parish he earned for himself the greatest respect and admiration from his parishioners without an exception, many of whom still recall in fondest expressions of endearment memories of their beloved rector of the past. At the time of his coming to Petite Riviere, the late Rev. J. L. R. Smith was accompanied by his daughter, who, some years later married Mr. Charles J. Hall. She has since resided at Petite Riviere. The late Mrs. Hall, who was a lady of high Christian principles, was a faithful member of St. Michael's Anglican Church and one of its most ardent workers in which capacity she will be greatly missed by the members of that congregation. Although a generally well-informed lady, Mrs. Hall possessed especial ability in many of the finer arts. At a very early age she began a musical education in which connection she showed marked ability and talent. As organist of St. Michael's Anglican church of Petite Riviere, she served faithfully and capably in this capacity for over 40 years. She also served in this same capacity in many other churches throughout this and various other parishes in which her father served as rector. The late Mrs. Hall was also very proficient in the art of oil painting, many specimens of her work of this type retaining a prominent place among the most prized pos- sessions of the various members of her family. In affiliation with her church life, Mrs. Hall was an active worker of St. Michael's Women's Auxiliary in which society her beautiful artistic needlework always held a very distinguished place. Surviving are a sorrowing husband, Charles J. Hall, of Petite Riviere; two sons, George, Sommerville, Mass., and Leigh, Petite Riviere, three daughters, Kathleen, Mrs. Arthur Ames, Boston; Ena, of Waverley, Mass., and Mabel Mrs. Reginald Kaulback, Crousetown. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Eva C. Miller, of Bermuda. Immediate members of her family who predeceased her were her brothers, the late Dr. F. S. Smith and the late Dr. W. R. Smith, both of whom passed away at Virginia, several years ago; also two sisters Florence and Mabel, and a brother, Bertram; all of whom passed away in infancy. Those of her immediate family who were present at her bedside at the time of her passing were her husband, her son Leigh, and her daughter, Mabel; while her other daughters; viz: Mrs. Ames and Miss Ena Hall motored from Boston as soon as they received the sad news of their mother's passing. The funeral, which was conducted by her rector, Rev. Robert Neish, was held from St. Michael's Anglican church, Petite Riviere, on Saturday afternoon. In spite of the inclement weather a large number of the people of the community attended in order to pay their last respects to one of their most highly esteemed citizens. In a most impressive address, based on selected passages from the order of the burial service, the rector most vividly portrayed the beauty of the continued presence of the spirits of our departed loved ones to guide us in our daily living here on earth-an address which was most comforting to those who had just lost a beloved wife and mother. The choir, under the direction of the organist, Harold C. Eikle, sang the hymns "The King of Love My Shepherd Is." "Let Saints on Earth in Concert Sing," and "Breathe on Me, Breath of God"-the last named hymn having been an especial favorite of the deceased. In fitting tribute to one whose life had been so dedicated to the finer things of life, the organist played as voluntaries Handel's "Largo" and the "Dead March" from "Saul." Pall-bearers were George Smith, Joel Gates, Henry Hirtle and Howard Publicover. Interment was in the Petite Riviere cemetery. Following is a list of floral offerings: Broken Circle: Husband. Pillow: Kathleen, Ena, Mabel and Leigh. Wreath: Mabel, Reginald and Brian. Sprays: Leta and family, St. Michael's W.A.; Mary Dolan, Florence Johnston, Mary Fairbain, Frances Hill, Rose Rudolph, Helen and Betty Cochrane, Mrs. Lillian Morris. Card of Thanks--Mr. Charles J. I miss your kind and willing hand, Your fond and earnest care, My home is dark without you mother, I miss you everywhere. Daughter Pauline HERMAN, MAURICE On Tuesday afternoon June 19th, 1956, the community of Crousetown was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of its best known and most highly respected residents in the person of Maurice Herman. Although in failing health for the past thirteen years, his sunny disposition always helped to conceal his serious condition of health to such an extent that his many friends and relatives received the news of his passing as a message of utter sadness. Born at Somerset, Lunenburg Co., 58 years ago, the late Mr. Herman was the son of Enos Herman and the late Jane Minnick Herman. In his early life he lived for many years in the U. S. A. Some nineteen years ago he with his family moved to Crousetown where he successfully followed the business of trucking for some years. Later when ill health forced him to retire he confined his interests to poultry raising. In all sincerity it might be said that his cheerfulness and high Christian fortitude with which he bore his lengthy illness were most distinguishing features of his life. Greatly beloved by all who knew him, the late Mr. Herman will ever be remembered with deepest affection as a highly esteemed neighbor and friend in the community in which he lived, likewise it might be truthfully said that as a loving husband and father he will ever be sadly missed and most fondly remembered by those members of his immediate family. Surviving are his wife, the former Blanche Corkum, his aged father, two sons, Edwin, of Crousetown, and PN3 Leo Herman, of Virginia Beach U. S. N.; one daughter Beulah (Mrs. Edwin Brunelle), of Vermont; three grandchildren Albina Gates, of Petite, and Joanne and Deborah Herman, of Crousetown; three brothers, Russell, of New Hampshire, and John and Guy, of New Cumberland; three sisters Sadie (Mrs. Robert Himmelman), of Conquerall Bank; Verna (Mrs. Dan Linehan), of Somerville, Mass., and Hazel (Mrs. Bertie Aulenbach), of Martin's Brook. Predeceasing him were one brother, Clarence, who passed away at New Hampshire many years ago, and two sisters, Mabel (Mrs. Mullet and Lizzie (Mrs. Archibald Shaw). The funeral services for the late Mr. Herman were held at the Crousetown United Church on Saturday afternoon, June 23rd, at 2:30 p.m. with the pastor Rev. Robert Mackay officiating and was one of the largest funerals ever held in that community, thus testifying to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. In his address, Rev. MacKay spoke most comfortingly to the sorrowing family. The choir under the leadership of Mrs. Wilfred Crouse sang the favourite hymn "Abide With Me," "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "Blest Be The Tie That Binds." Harold E. Eikle was the organist for the service. Pall bearers were William Ramey, Maurice Ramey, Gordon Ramey, Arthur Bolivar, George Snyder and Everette Crouse. Interment took place in the Crousetown Community Cemetery. HERMAN, MRS. HOLDEN, WILLIAM S. Lunenburg County's Oldest Citizen Passed Away March 17, 1929 Our aged and respected citizen, W. S. Holden, passed away on Sunday morning after an illness of only about two days although he had been indisposed for a month past, not having been in his usual good health during part of that time. Mr. Holden was 108 years old on Dec. 26th and at that time the usual reception in his honor was held and he seemed to be almost as well as he was twenty years ago. The immediate cause of his death was hemorage of the brain. The deceased, who was born at Jordan River, Shelburne County, was a ship carpenter in his early days, and came to this place when he was about forty years old, marrying Joanna Sperry, now deceased, and buying the property at the corner now owned by S. He was active in many walks of life and in his earlier days bore a fine reputation as a road builder. One of his works was the erection of the stone approaches to the present iron bridge here 43 years ago and which have stood to this day without any repairs. Some years after the marriage of his daughter, Elizabeth to the late J. A. Sperry he sold out his property and retired from active life, to reside with her. Since that time he has enjoyed remarkable health and been a source of a great deal of pleasure, information and interest to countless people who have been guests at his daughter's hotel. He had a wonderful memory and a happy faculty of talking most interestingly of his long life and varied experiences and has scores of friends over the country who will regret his passing. Enoch kept his word and brought Anna Teal to Conquerall Bank just sixty-two years ago, a pretty bride of twenty-four, and she has lived there ever since. When but a little girl, Anna Teal had her lobes pierced with a darning needle and has ever since worn a little set of gold rings in her ears. Mrs. Langille and the late Mrs. Ariel Feindel, of Bridgewater, were great friends, both being born in Broad Cove.
