She was a nurse in training at the Nova Scotia Hospital during the time of The Halifax Explosion. She then went to the VG and the old Children's Hospital. She became an RN and went to the United States, becoming supervisor of the Worcester State Hospital, Massachusetts. Later, she opened her own nursing home for heart patients. She met and married Edward Cross Sr., from Prince Edward Island. They had one son, Edward Jr., who died at the age of 56 from a heart attack. Born in Lunenburg, he was a son of the late Freeman and Ada May (Smith) Corkum. He was educated at Lunenburg Academy, continuing his studies in the field of business in Valparaiso, Ind. His family name was synonymous with sports. Mr. Corkum was a crew member of the famous racing schooner, the Bluenose, after which he entered the motion picture business as a projectionist with Capital Theatre in 1938. He was appointed manager and operator in 1956, holding that position until his retirement. Mr. Corkum was a man of versatile talent. He was a member of Lunenburg Board of Trade, Community Centre Commission, Maritime Motion Picture Exhibitors, Canadian Picture Pioneers and Unity Lodge 4 of the Masonic Order. He was a former town councillor for 18 consecutive years; fire warden of the Town of Lunenburg; commissioner of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, and trustee of the Common Land Commission. He was a police constable for eight years and director of Lunenburg Marine Museum. Mr. Corkum was an extremely active and faithful member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church for many years; a member of the church choir; former member of the board of managers; secretary for several years of St. Andrew's Church school church elder and, since 1963, member of the session. Joe was born February 21, 1920, and grew up in White Rock in Nova Scotia's Gaspereau Valley. As a young man, he travelled to Western Canada where he met Doris, his wife and companion for 51 years. Doris passed away January 30, 1996. Surviving are their children, Ken, Saskatoon, and Connie, Nova Scotia; grandchildren, Shea, Hanna and Nathan; brother, Morley, Wolfville; sisters, Blanche and Beulah, Hantsport; a multitude of nieces, nephews, close companions and friends. Joe was special, he had a great compassionate heart that could not bear injustice, a wisdom beyond understanding, a head chock-full of stories and a laugh half a mile wide.
