The 1901 Personal Diary of D.J. Rudolf, Mayor of Lunenburg Jan 1 Fine. I went to 10.30 a.m. Service and at 3 pm I went visiting with D.M. Owen, then took tea at the Band Bazaar, & spent the evening at D.M. Owens, with Revd. Wallis & a few others . Jan 2 Hard to work all day, posting my Books . Jan 3 Nothing to note. I am busy all the time making up a/cs as usual at this season. . Jan 5Rain storm . Jan 6Revd Wallis preached here. I went to Church & school then took a walk . Jan 8Municipal Council met in session . Jan 12Heavy snow storm. No service in our Church. Street Inspector turned out with his men to shovel the snow (Sunday) [This should have been entered under Jan 13, I think - PLS] . Jan 16I met the Municipal Arbitrating Committee to settle the annual amount for the Town to pay. After the business I visited the committee at the house . Jan 18Rained. I had the last meeting of the Town Council before the annual Election . Jan 19Wind West clear & cold, sleighing rough, & bare in some places . Jan 20Extremely cold. 7 below zero. Revd. Hand from Blanford preached here. I went to Church & School, then took a walk with my wife down on the back Harbour. Mrs. Joshua Isener, of Lower LaHave, died very suddenly this 6 p.m. . Jan 21Wind South & mild, quite a change. ? Carnival at the Rink I went down for a while to see the skaters. . Jan 22Telegram arrived this 3 p.m. that Queen Victoria had just died. I as Mayor ordered the flags put up halfmast on the public Buildings, also the Church bells to be tolled. It was not unexpected, as she had been gradually sinking some days . Jan 23I attended Church meeting this 8 p.m. & gave my vote for Revd G. Wallis for Rector of this Parish. Wrote Mary Lawson. Rupert Kaulback & family arrived home from Quebec. . Jan 24Rained all day, dark & gloomy. I closed business at 6 p.m. & remained at home perusing the Papers giving the accounts of our beloved Queens death . Jan 25Fine day & business lively. I called a meeting of the School Board at 4 p.m. & meeting of the Town Council at 8 p.m. to make arrangements for a memorial Service on the day of the Queens burial . Jan 26Blustering snow storm & quiet business. I met at 4 p.m. with the Clergymen, in the Town Office to arrange for a memorial Service, at the time of the Queens funeral . Jan 27Fine & mild Revd Romerilly[?] from LaHave preached here & gave an address on the Queens death. I was twice to Church, also to School, then called to see R. Kaulback, who was ill . Jan 28Fine clear & cold. I went with Newcomb to the Carnival . Jan 29I was nominated for Mayor, & accepted, so I will have to work it up or suffer defeat . Jan 30Very fine day & business [?] one. Evening I went to see Hockey match, & put in some canvassing . Jan 31Snowed all day a quiet business ending for January . Feb 1 Clear & cold with good sleighing. I canvassed the Town for votes, as these, or in fact all Elections are very uncertain. Jno. Mullock of Jonas died today. . Feb 2 Holiday day wih memorial Service for the death of the Queen. I as Mayor walked in a body with the Town Council to the Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. & also to the Methodist at 2 p.m. Big crowds. . Feb 3 Very cold & with snow squalls. I went to Lutheran Church in the morning & to the Methodist in the evening, as our Church was closed. Too disagreeable to walk far in the afternoon, so I was home. . Feb 4 Mild and good sleighing. I canvassed the Town for Mayors Election . Feb 5 Town Election today & a hot contest, but I defeated Chas Whitney by 103 majority, a great victory . Feb 6 Mrs. Bligh of Berwick, formerly Emma Lindsay of this Town took tea with us, with Mrs. E. Steverman, & Mr. P. Ross with Mr. D.M. Owen, came in & had a game of Whist . Feb 7 I sent papers to Rosey & Mary Lawson. At 8 p.m. I called a meeting of the new Council. . Feb 8 Miss Schmitt of Halifax took tea with us and spent the evening. Very cold night down to zero. Childrens Carnival at the Rink. . Feb 9 Still very cold & business quiet. Nothing to note . Feb 10 Revd Romerilly preached here. I went to Church & School, then took a walk with D.M.O. Evening at home reading. . Feb 11 I had a special meeting of Council at 8 p.m. to receive nominating committee's report. Wind West & cold, bad sleighing . Feb 12 I had convened meeting of School Board at 4 p.m. & at 8 p.m. attended meeting of Fishermens Marine Insurance and then went to a party at D.M.O. Mrs. Bligh & a few others. . Feb 13 Still very cold 8 below zero at night. We were at a party at Mrs. Sponagles. Arch Morash was married to Henrietta Smeltzer. . Feb 14 I with Councillor Acker visited the Academy & inspected several departments. Mr. Troupe spent the evening with us. . Feb 15 Fine & good sleighing. I got a team and drove the family to LaHave. Evening we were at Mr. Schmidts to a party. Our servant left today . Feb 16 Fine & mild lot of folks in Town. Business good . Feb 17 Bishop Courtney preached here. I attended Service Morn & Evening & took charge of the Sunday School. At 4 p.m. I took a walk with D.M.O. . Feb 18 Mrs. Rupert Kaulback's wedding day 1896. We spent the evening with them . Feb 19 Wind Southeast raw & cold. Orangemen had a procession here, & a sermon in the Methodist Church. Dr. Mitchner spent the evening with us . Feb 20 Ash Wednesday, but no service here, as our new Rector has not arrived . Feb 21 Still very fine, steady weather, but no sleighing. I was at home reading . Feb 22 Wind west & very fine. Nothing to note, except C.E. Kaulback left by Train this a.m. for Ottawa . Feb 23 Another fine day & business fair. Revd Mr. Wallis arrived by Train to take his position as Rector of St. John's Parish Lunenburg . Feb 24 Our new Rector Revd. Wallis preached this 7 p.m. did not have any morning Service, as it was a blustering snow storm. I went to School at 2 p.m., & at 4 p.m. I took a walk with D.M.O. & Nepean. The gale was felt heavier at Halifax than for years, unroofed the Grand Exhibition Stand. . Feb 25 We went to skating Rink the first time, & after that called at R. Kaulbacks . Feb 26 Dr. Mitchner spent the evening with us . Feb 27 We went to Church at 8 p.m.! the first Lent Services . Feb 28 Fine clear & cold. Theodore Cossman married today at Truro. Oddfellows marched in procession at 8 p.m. to the Presbyterian Church where Revd. Leck/Leek preached a sermon. Mar 1Nothing special to note. I went to Church 8 p.m. Mrs. Thos Acker died Today at Philadelphia where she resided with her daughter. . Mar 2My sister Ellen died this 4 p.m. in the sixtieth year of age, at her home Everett Mass. U.S. wife of William H. Lockett. She had been ill for some weeks . Mar 3We all went to Church & at 2 pm I went to school. On my return I received a telegram from Mr Lockett announcing the death of his wife, my sister Ellen. It was not unexpected to me, as she had been ill for some weeks. . Mar 4Snowed, then rained all day. My place of business was closed. I wrote several letters, & read the rest of the day. Revd. Wallis called to see us. . Mar 5Rained & snowed. I was at home all day as my store was closed. Mrs. R Kaulback came in the evening. . Mar 6I was at business. At 8 p.m. I went to Church. Esther our old servant came back to us again. . Mar 7Mrs. Thos. Acker's remains came on by Train last evening & the funeral took place this 3 p.m. . Mar 8Fine I took a walk for recreation with Rupe Kaulback at 5 p.m. & at 8 p.m. went to Church . Mar 9Rained & quiet busness Telegram received that the Schn. Rambler, Captn. Isaiah Zinck had become a total wreck at Louisburg. Crew saved. She was on the way home from Newfondland with Herring. . Railway was washed out in several places Train had to lay over, no Mails for two days. . Apr 7Easter, fog & disagreeable We went to early Service, also at 10-30 & to the children's Service at 3 p.m. then I took a walk with D.M.O. Evening at home . Apr 8I attended funeral of Arthur Thurlow, who was buried with Masonic honours. We took tea at Mrs. C.E. Kaulback's at 6-30, after which I went to the annual Parish meeting. Watson Isenor & Jno Anderson were elected Wardens. . Apr 9I had meeting of Town Council, to make up estimates, etc. . Apr 10Revd. Wallis was inducted as Rector of St. Johns Parish by Archdeacon Kaulback, assisted by Rural Dean Gelling, & Revds. Harris & Norwood . Apr 11Wind Northeast blowing a gale & cold . Apr 12Still cold & snowed. Public meeting held this 8 p.m. resulted in a vote not to purchase Water Plant at $95,000. I feel the Town will buy it & pay more for it later . I attended Church at 10-30 & School at 2 p.m., after I went for a walk with Newcomb over to Rodenhisers woods and picked the first Mayflowers. Evening we supped at R.C.S. Kaulback's . The Herman Stock Co. performed here. We went to the Shed to see them act The Witch of Wall Street . Apr 19Miss Leah Hirtle held her rehearsal of Piano pupils at the Hall this 8 p.m. We all went to hear the children play . Apr 20Wind still East with fog & mist. Bank fishermen have been kept back for three weeks. . Apr 21Rain & fog but I got to Church twice & to Sunday School, also to supper at R.C.S.K. . Apr 22Fog & rain all day . Apr 23Rained in torrents all day . Apr 24Fog & mist. R. Curries & wife returned. He resumes charge of the Royal Bank again, after an absence of about two years. . Evening I read at home until 10 p.m. then I called for D.M.O. & he went with me to sit up with John Smith, who is very ill. I only got home at 6 a.m. & slept until 9 but I felt seedy all day. . Apr 29Fishermen all left today for the Bank. Harbour almost clear of vessels. . Apr 30Dr. Kenedy had a free Concert on the street, & selling Sherwood Bitters to be continued for a week. . May 1Very fine. I took my family for a drive out to LaHave to fish for Troat [sic]. Had a nice time, got lots of Mayflowers & we all enjoyed the outing. . Kaulback all drove to Crouses Lake & picniced [sic] also caught 4 Troat, returned at 8 p.m. & all thoroughly enjoyed it, came home happy but tired. . May 25Rained all day . Jun 14I left by Train for home this 8 a.m. & my wife & Mabel met me at Middleton, we arrived home at 6 p.m. & all enjoyed the little trip, particularly myself as I go very seldom. . Jun 15Fine today & I was busy getting up back work. . Jun 16Annie Jost left this 9 a.m. for Halifax on SS Prince Edward. After seeing her off I remained at home to rest, feeling tired. Mr. C.E. Tribune arrived here, the Captn (Gallway) called on me officially (as Mayor of the City) & invited me with my friends on board to Five oclock tea, which I accepted, & returned & took the Captn for a drive & entertained him with several others at the house. . Jul 3Wind West extremely hot. We drove to LaHave to a garden party, returned at 9-30 p.m. & went to C.E. Kaulbacks to visit Capt Gallway & a few others, we had a nice time . .Jul 4Painters S.E. Mack painting the outside of my house. At 7 p.m. Mrs H. Kaulback called & gave us a drive which we thoroughly enjoyed. . Jul 5Still very warm, & business quiet. Mrs. Jacob Owen arrived from Annapolis, on a visit to D.M. Owen, . Jul 6Wind south & dull rain expected. Painters finished their work at the house. Mrs K spent the evening with us . Jul 7Rained, which was much needed. I went to Church 10-30 a.m., to School 2 p.m. then called on Mrs. Jacob Owen & took a walk with D.M. Owen. Evening I was at home. Miss Hamilton arrived by Steamer, a visitor at James Rudolfs. . Jul 8Fine & very warm. We went for a sail with J. Rudolf Yacht Esme. Mr. Ellis, Professor Hank/Hauk & Mr. & Mrs. R. Kaulback accompanied us. . Jul 9Rained all day, very quiet. Miss Alice Ruggles arrived by Steamer to visit her Aunt, Miss Owen. . Jul 10I went with J Rudolf Yacht Esme for a sail. Evening we went to see Bachelor Honeymoon performed, which was the best show that was here for years. . Jul 11Dull & sultry. Mrs Jacob, & Mrs. Nepean Owen with Miss Alice Ruggles & Mr. Owen & Mr. Schmidt spent the evening with us to celebrate my Birthday. . Jul 12Wind West & hot. Jul 22Summer School of Science arrived here this evening to be followed by another contingent by Steamer Prince Edwd tomorrow. . Jul 23Grand public reception given to S.S. of Science at the Drill Shed this 8 p.m. at which I presided & gave the opening address of welcome also entertained several of the Principals at my house. . Jul 24Miss Susan Jost & Miss Gossip from Halifax are our visitors, who came by Steamer yesterday. I went with a lot of visitors at 2 p.m. for a sail Yacht Esme. Mrs. Jno. Young died this 2 p.m. . Jul 25I took at 9 a.m. about 20 visitors by Steam Tug over to South to see the Fish Trap taking out Mackerel. At 8 p.m. We all went to hear Prof Higginson lecture. . Jul 26Still very fine. We all went to see the Kindergarden [sic] school at 10 a.m., & at 8 p.m. we went to the Lecture on Manuel [sic] training & Domestic science. . Jul 27Very fine & warm & good for the haymakers but quiet for business. I went at 9-30 p.m. to the Academy to hear the last part of Lecture Physiology & Mr. Cambelle [sic] came to the house with me & had refreshment. . Jul 28I took Dr Baillie & family to Church, & 3 p.m. I went with them to the Observatory. Evening we went to Methodist meeting to hear Dr Andrews preach. . Jul 29Still fine. At 2 p.m. I went with a party on the Yacht Esme to the Owens & at 7 p.m. I took Dr Baillie & wife & daughter with Dr Scott for a row on the harbour & brought them back to my house for supper. . Jul 30Fine until 11 a.m. then rained all the day. The S. School of Science went on an excursion to Chester but there was not much fun in it & they returned at 6 p.m. by special train Via Mahone Bay. . Jul 31Cleared up & very fine. 75th Batt Band gave a grand concert this evening at the Drill Shed. Mr. & Mrs. Bailey & daughter with a few others spent the evening with us. Aug 1The excursion with the Summer School of Science took place today on the Steamers Trusty & Maggie to deep cove. Left at 9 a.m. & returned at 8 p.m., a grand success. At 10 p.m. we all went to D.M. Owen's to an icecream party. . Aug 2Emily & I with Aunt Susan went on a drive to Lower LaHave, with C.E. Kaulback, Albert, & Rupe, with their wives. We left at 10-30 a.m. & returned at 7 p.m. We all enjoyed the drive. I attended lecture by Prof Prince on Inland Fisheries. . Aug 3Fine but business very quiet. At 9-30 p.m. I went to hear the second part of Proff Princes lecture on Fisheries, & Prof Cambell came in to supper. James Kaulback arrived here from Boston the guest of C.E. Kaulback. . Aug 4I went to Church twice & in the afternoon I took with a team, Proff Prince, Dr. Baillie, Dr. Hall over to the Head, & in the evening they all came to my house to supper with their wives. . Aug 5This 2 p.m. I drove a party of Ten down to Heckmans Island, & at 8 p.m. I presided at Academy Hall at Atty General Longley lecture on Religion in the Schools, after which I invited the Speaker of the evening with several others at my house. . .Aug 6This 2 p.m. I rowed a party to the Head & at 8 p.m. we went to the S.S.S. Concert, after which we went to an icecream party by the Faculty of the School, given at Kings Hotel. . Aug 7Fine & I went with the crowd on the excursion to Bridgewater, we had a fine trip, all enjoyed. My wife met me there with a double team & Archdeacon Kaulback & wife, with several others drove home while the crowd came by Train. Clara went to LaHave on a visit . Aug 8Rained until noon, then cleared up. At 8 p.m. I went to the Academy to hear the farewell address of the S.S. of Science. I was invited on the platform with Mayor Davison, & I had to respond to the vote of thanks to the Town, which I did in my usual brief way. . Aug 9Very fine West wind. Garden party at the Head. I went & returned at 10 p.m., as we had Mr. & Mrs. Cambelle in spending the evening. The Garden party was a grand success realised $200.00 . Aug 10Still fine. The S.S. of Science mostly all left by Train this morning. Business quiet. I closed at 9:30 p.m. & went home . Aug 11The last of the S.S. of Science left this 9 a.m. by Steamer Prince Edwd for Halifax, amongst them our guests, Aunt Susan Jost & Miss Gossip. This 3 p.m. I walked to the Observatory wih James Kaulback, & called on our return at Mispah[?] Cottage to see Mrs. Grounds, also at Medway Hall. James Kaulback came in to tea & spent the evening with us. . Aug 12Wind East, threatening rain. We spent the evening socially at Rupert Kaulbacks. Rained all night . Aug 13Wind West with showers. Mrs. Haslam & family came by Steamer today, visiting N. Zwicker. I took my family for a row, & then spent the evening at C.E. Kaulback's . Aug 14James Kaulback left by Train this morning. Garden Party at Bridgewater. I went out with our School Board to meet the Boards of Mahone & Bridgewater & decided to open a department of Manuel Training & Domestic Science in each School, to commence Nov 1st, I hope it may be a success. . Aug 15Fog & very close heat. We took Miss Ruggles with us in the boat to the Battery & all had a bathe. Evening we called at Norman Zwickers, to see Mrs. Haslam & the Miss Brents. . Aug 16Still close damp & warm. We had a party Mrs. Haslam & three sisters Mr. & Mrs. Zwicker two Miss Fincks, D.M. Owen & Miss Ruggles, also Mr. & Mrs. Rupert Kaulback. All had a nice time & left 1 a.m. . Aug 17Very fine, with cool West wind. I drove to the Battery Beach with Mr. Schmidt & Ross to have a bathe. Emily & Mrs Rupert Kaulback had been there all day, having family picnic, also Stevermans children, they all returned wih us at 5 p.m. . Aug 18Very fine. Emily & I wen to Lutheran Church to hear Revd Weaver. 3 p.m. I took a walk with my children, evening I was at home, as Mr. Fox preached Revd Wallis being away on vacation to P.E. Island. . Aug 19We all drove this 2 p.m. to LaHave as Josiah was taken ill yesterday with paralysis. He is now better, but I feel that it is the beginning of a break up. We returned at 8 p.m. . .Aug 20We went to the Head with the children just for an outing. Mr Theo. Cossman went with us. Evening we took a walk & called in at Rupert Kaulbacks . .Aug 21Emilys birthday, we all gave her trivial presents. At 4 p.m. I called with R. Kaulback to see Mrs. N. Zwicker, who was celebrating his birthday being 81 years. They had a family gathering of all Sons with their wives, also the Daughters, except Mrs. Primrose of Texas, who was unable to come. . Aug 22Still very fine, but I was at work all day posting Books, & in the evening we went to a party at Mrs. Kaulbacks Mispah Cottage. Had a nice time & got home at 1 a.m. . Aug 23Fine calm & warm. Emily went with the children & Mrs. Kaulback, Mrs. Schmidt to Battery Beach at 11 a.m. & I followed at 1 p.m., returned at 5 p.m. Evening at home. . Aug 24Very warm & getting very dry. Business quiet but we kept at it until 10 p.m. then I went home . Aug 25We slept late & did not get to Church & at 2 p.m. we drove out to see Josiah, found him better, arrived home at 7 p.m. partly wet as it rained but we did not mind, as the rain was much needed. . Aug 26Blue Monday with fog & rain. I wrote Rosey & Annie. Evening we spent at Edwin Kaulback's, with Mrs. Hartshorn & Mrs. Willettes. . Aug 27Very fine. Florry & Clara Symons arrived by Steamer at 11-30 a.m. We all went for a row at 7 p.m. & returned at 9 p.m. Mrs. Kaulback came in. . Aug 28We drove at 5 p.m. to LaHave garden party & returned at 11 p.m. had a nice time. Mr. & Mrs. Cogswell, Mrs. Kaulback, Mrs. E. Zwicker, Mrs. Haslam, two Miss Symons & my wife & I, with little Mabel. . Aug 29Another lovely day, but not much on. Florry & Clara went bathing in the morning & played Tennis afternoon, at home with music in the evening. I banked my Celery tonight & cleaned up the yard. . Aug 30Still fine, with West wind I went with Peter Ross to the Battery Beach & had a bathe at 4 p.m. Evening we had Mrs. Grounds, Miss Murney[?] & Mr Owen & Ruggles to a little party . Sep 1We all went to Church morning & evening, afternoon I went for a walk to Battery Beach with Florry Symons Evening Mr Ruggles came in & Mr & Mrs R. Kaulback . Sep 2Labor day, all the Stores were closed, we went with J. Rudolf in the Yacht to the Ovens on a Picnic, Mr & Mrs Schmidt, & our visitors, returned at 8 p.m. & had a nice time. Our wedding day . Sep 3Fine we were all home as I was busy opening up Scotch Goods. Evening Dr. Mitchner, & Mr & Mrs Kaulback came in had a game of whist. . Sep 4Still fine. Sunday School picnic on the Head, all the family went at 4 p.m. & I went for them with the boat at 7 p.m. . We all went to Mrs. Fincks to Whist party President McKinlay was shot today, but not fatally, by an assassin at the Buffalo Exhibition. . Sep 8I remained at home in the morning & at 3 p.m. I went for a walk with Florrie & Clara down to Myras Island. Evening called out to Medway Hall to see Mr & Mrs Brown of Quebec . Sep 9Wind North & quite cool I had a meeting of School Board at 8 p.m. & at 10 I went to Owens to a whist party, with our visitors. . We were at home, but our visitors were out to tea at Mrs. Fincks . Sep 14President McKinlay died this 4 p.m. I as Mayor ordered the Flags hoisted at halfmast on all the public buildings. At 7 p.m. we went to dine at R.C.S. Kaulbacks, it being the 29th anniversary of Mr & Mrs Browns wedding day . Sep 15Mrs Symons, Florrie & Clara left by Steamer this 10 a.m. Also Mr & Mrs Brown, Mrs Haslam & family, with about sixty others to the Exhibition, which opened yesterday & will be continued until the 21st inst. Sep 27I called a meeting of Board of Health this 10-30 a.m. & had the out skirts of the Town placarded to prevent any communication to or from the Black Rocks. Watson Isener/Oxner & Mary Adams were married this 7 a.m. & took the Train for St. John. Election here for Local Government. A.K. Maclean & Edwd Davison elected with a large majority. Grits carry this county in Local, & Conservatives in the Dominion, Elections. . Oct 3Rain all day. Election is over. Conservatives feel down cast at their defeat but the Grits are jubilant at their enormous majority 875. I am satisfied. . Oct 4Wind West 7 clearing up & becoming fine . Oct 19This 4 a.m. Str Prince Edwd came in, & about 150 passengers went from here, we arrived at Halifax 8 a.m. I went to Annies, had breakfast, & at 10 we went to see the Cornerstone laid for the South African soldiers, by the Duke, at 3 p.m. went on the Common to see the Review & Colors presented, at 9 p.m. I went to the Provincial Building to the public presentation. [The following in margin of same day] And had the honour of shaking hands with the Duke & Duches[sic] of York our future King .. Oct 20We all went to St Pauls Church. The Bishop preached, Lord & Lady Minto & Staff were there. At 3 p.m. went to the Dockyard to see the S.S. Ophir, in which the Duke & Duchess sailed. We went to Church, & then called to see the Schaefers, came home & retired at 12 . Oct 21I went to see the Ships sail at 10 a.m. then I went shopping & at 3 p.m. we all went to the Gardens & up to the Nursery & Dry Dock. At 9 p.m. I took Miss Norah Gray to Government House, where we were presented to the Governor Jones, & Laurier, Premier . Oct 22This 8 a.m. we left for home by Steamer Prince Edward, & arrived here at 11-30, glad to get home, but we all enjoyed the little trip, & appreciated a rest. Evening we went to see Mrs. R. Rudolf, Mayor of Lunenburg. [Lent to Pat Smith who has done these transcriptions.] The mayor's former home is still on Lincoln Street in Lunenburg. There is a plaque on it to recognize this fact. A picture of the house appears on p.36 of "Buildings of Old Lunenburg", by Terry James & Bill Plaskett, Nimbus Publishing, 1996. Information from Peter Haughn, Asst. Manager of the Town of Lunenburg, indicates that D.J. Rudolf was elected Mayor of Lunenburg each year from Feb 9, 1899, until he stepped down on Feb 6, 1902, having chosen not to run again that year.
