Harbor Grace Standard & Conception Bay Advertiser

1880

The HARBOR GRACE STANDARD, earliest issue located: Dec. 7, 1859 (v. 1, no. 4)and it ceased publication: 1936. Frequency of publication was weekly, Dec. 7, 1859-Mar. 3, 1888; semiweekly, Mar. 10, 1888-1894 and weekly, 1894-1936?

The paper had several titles: Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Dec. 7, 1859-Dec.25, 1867; Harbor Grace Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Mar.1, 1871-Mar. 3, 1888; Harbor Grace Standard, Mar. 10, 1888-1936.

The Harbor Grace Standard published news of the Conception Bay Region, domestic and foreign news, legislative proceedings, extracts from St. John's papers, shipping and fishing news, poetry, and advertisements. The paper strongly opposed Confederation in 1865 but supported it by 1869. In the 1870's the paper did not receive patronage from the Bennett administration and supported Carter and Ambrose Shea, who represented the Harbour Grace district in the House of Assembly. The paper supported the railway and Whiteway's first administration. The Standard took the Protestant side in the aftermath of the 1883 Harbour Grace affray and supported Thorburn in 1885. The Standard was published until 1936 when it folded due to economic reasons.

One bud the garner gave me,
A fair and only boy.
He gave it to my keeping
To cherish undefiled
It lay upon my bosom
He was hope and pride
Perhaps he was an idol
Which I should be denied
For just as it was opening
In glory to the day
Came down the Heavenly garner
And took my bud away
Yet not in wrath he took him
A smile was on his face
And tenderly and kindly
He bore him from his place
"Fear Not," me thought he whispered
"Thy bud shall be restor'd
I take him but to plant him
In the garden of the Lord"
Then bid me not to sorrow
As those who hopeless weep
For he who gave hath taken
And he who took can keep
And night and morn together
By the opening gate of prayer
I'll go in unto my darling,
And sit beside him there
I know't will open for me
Poor sinner though I be
For his dear sake who keeps it
And keeps my bud for me.

Fold the hands across the breast
So, as when they knelt to pray
Lead them to their dreamless rest
For our darlings died to-day
Lay their little limbs out straight
Gently shroud their sacred clay
Sorrow-shaded is our face
For our darling died to-day
No more we'll hear their prattling voice
Chanting its incessant lay
For from our flock God took his choice
And our darlings died to-day
But we'll try to bear it calmly
And with thankful hearts to say
God gave and He hath taken
Our darling children away
As we kiss their pale cold lips
And press their cold forms to our breast
We know our darlings are now with Jesus
Happy in his arms at rest.

They are laying her low in her narrow bed, and sadly their tears fall o'er her, as they place her beside the kindred dead, who have gone from this world before her; and wrung is each heart that the grave should hide their lovely, their bright one - their hope - their pride. Oh whisper to them that she sleeps not here - oh, tell them to cease repining; Her spirit has fled to a happier sphere. Where the light of the Lamb is shining. Their bright one is brighter, and lovelier far, singing in Heaven to the Morning Star. Like the sun of the summer, she calmly set, and she left us a light behind her, that may cheer our steps in the pathway yet, to the mansion wherein we shall find her. May we seek as she sought for a joyful rest, for the dead who die in the Lord are blest.

Gone Home - I'm a little pilgrim, and a stranger here, though this world is pleasant, sin is always near. Mine's a better Country, where there is no sin, where the tones of sorrow never enter in. But a little pilgrim must have garments clean if I'd wear the White Robe and with Christ be seen. Farewell, little pilgrim, though a stranger here, go to your home in Heaven - we hope to meet you there.
