Merced County Genealogical Socie

Merced County Genealogical Society

How it all began . . .

In 1983, Dianna Kauth called a few friends together to meet at her house in the Winton area to discuss the possibility of forming a genealogy society. Following this meeting an article was placed in the Merced Sun-Star and on July 23, 1983 seven ladies met at the Merced County Library for their first meeting. The ladies were Bea Anderson, Helen Green, Rosalie Heppner, Dianna Kauth, Harriet Ledford, Carolyn Lemas, and Barbara Mckee.
Since this was the only turnout, each lady became an officer with Barbara agreeing to become the first president. This little group had a lot of fun meeting in Barbara's kitchen each month planning the meetings and drinking coffee.

One of Dianna's friends in the Bay area  (Carolyn Sherfy) was very active in genealogy and gave us a lot of help in the beginning, especially helping with the By-Laws.

Slowly the group grew from the original seven to a membership now of 130. Of the original seven Rosalie has continued her membership. Bea, Helen and Dianna are deceased, and Barbara moved to another state.
