Saturday, January 31, 2009--“A Historical Overview of Nueva Vizcaya; New Spain’s Northern Frontier”

FAMILIA is pleased to announce the first of our 2009 lecture presentations.

Our guest speaker for January 31, 2009 will be Professor Rick Hendricks of New Mexico State University. Prof. Hendricks is well known for his numerous publications and scholarly work on Colonial New Mexico and the greater southwest, and on this occasion he examines the history, events and people of Nueva Vizcaya, bastion of the Spanish frontier.

Students of history and ancestral researchers are encouraged to attend as this is an excellent opportunity to learn of a region that has influenced the development of northern Mexico and the American southwest. Mexican states that once formed Nueva Vizcaya include; Durango, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Sonora and Sinaloa.

This past October 11, 2008: John P. Schmal, a member, presented two lectures that benefited those in attendance. "Indigenous Mexico: Past and Present" - a 40-frame presentation on Mexico's Indigenous Peoples (To see the power point presentation for yourself, see INDIGENOUS MÉXICO: An Introduction to México’s Remarkable Diversity) and "Hispanic Genealogy for Beginners." Cultural Events for Familia Members

Eddie Martinez has over 40 years experience as an artist and designer, earning worldwide respect and acclaim. Please see the web site EddieMartinez He has painted numerous portraits of friends and celebrities, such as Ricardo Montalban, John F. Kennedy and Walt Disney. Martinez designed and art directed a Catholic shrine for the Rose Garden at the City of Hope in Duarte, California. He worked closely with Bill Davila and Dr. Sanford Shapiro in creating "La Virgin de Guadalupe Shrine." The unveiling of the marble sculpture included a reenactment of the miracle story. Martinez also scripted the story and directed the live performance.

Art Exhibits

Visit the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and the adjacent Los Angeles Craft and Folk Art Museum on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles (near Beverly Hills) for a mainstream taste of Hispanic art. Keep in mind, though, that these museums primarily feature art from America and around the world, with smaller collections of specifically Latino artwork.

Head into the Boyle Heights community of East Los Angeles to view the legendary graffiti artwork in Estrada Courts . Considered by many to be flagship examples of contemporary urban Hispanic art, the Estrada Courts graffiti has been featured in many motion picture, television and music video productions. Use good sense, though, as East Los Angeles can be a tough neighborhood.

Spread your wings beyond Los Angeles proper to enjoy specifically Hispanic art at specialized museums in the suburbs. The Museum of Latin American Art in nearby Long Beach is an excellent place to celebrate Hispanic artwork. More information can be found on the museum's website.

Drive to the Los Angeles suburb of Pomona to visit another gallery dedicated to Hispanic art, the Latino Art Museum Featuring mostly modern works of Hispanic art, the Latino Art Museum also offers special classes and events for children and festivals to celebrate the accomplishments of local artists. Check their website for current events.

Check with the other major galleries and cultural centers in the city of Los Angeles to see if any special exhibitions of Hispanic art are being planned. Both the Getty Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) at the Geffen Contemporary in downtown Los Angeles are among the city's principal art museums. Both institutions sponsor many special exhibitions and events throughout the year, and may feature exhibits by Hispanic artists.
