Joseph Burt + Polly Holt

Family of Joseph Burt and Polly Holt

Joseph Burt of Cumberland County, North Carolina was the son of John Burt who died in Chatham County, North Carolina in 1780. His wife was Polly Holt, a daughter of Frederick and Rebecca Holt. [1]

His name first appears in Chatham County records about two months before the death of his father: [2]

p. 410 - 10 Aug. 1780 - John Burt Senr. to his son Joseph Burt - Good causes and considerations - 250 a. on Buck Horn Creek - joins Richard Burt.
Signed: John Burt Sen.
Wit: Richard Warthen, James Avent

By 1784, Joseph Burt had moved to Cumberland County, North Carolina, as shown by the following Chatham County deed: [2]

Deed Book C, p. 168 - 6 May 1786 - Joseph Burt of Cumberland County, N.C. to Samuel Boykin of Chatham County, N.C. - 150 pds. - 210 a. - joins Richard Burt and the Dry Water Branch.
Signed: Joseph (x) Burt
Wit: Zacha. Dillard, Richard Burt

The 1790 census of Fayette District, Cumberland County, recorded Joseph Burt as follows:

1 WM > 16, 1 WF, 3 slaves

The absence of children in the household suggests that John and Polly Burt had recently married.

Young Burt, his brother, was also enumerated in Cumberland County.

Joseph Burt was deceased by 1805 [3].

  5. No further record for William has been found at this time. No William Burts appear in the 1820 Tennessee census, and the four William Burts listed in the 1820 census of Halifax Co. and Nash Co., NC have been identified as other William Burts.
  6. From an LDS record; another possibility is that the Jesse Burt who married Nancy Olive was the son of Alfred C. Burt.
