John Burt + Margaret Brown

Family of John Burt and Margaret Brown

John Burt was born 9 September 1818 [1] in Georgia [2]. He was probably the son of John Burt who died in Autauga County, Alabama in 1827 [3].

John Burt was married 23 Jan 1846 in Monroe Co., Mississippi [7] to Margaret W. Brown. Margaret Brown, the daughter of Robert Brown and Dorcas Strait [8,9], was born 24 August 1828 [1] in South Carolina [2]. Upon her marriage, Margaret's well-to-do parents presented her and John with a gift of money with which to buy their land and build their log cabin, as well as a gift of slaves [4]. John Burt was said to be [5] a very well educated man who spoke excellent English and an avid reader. Their home was located in the New Chapel community [6].

Following the death of Margaret Brown Burt on 16 February 1897 [1], John Burt made his home with his youngest daughter, Maggie, and her family [5]. He died there on 21 April 1900 [1]. John and Margaret Burt are buried in New Chapel Cemetery, Itawamba Co., MS.
