Frederick Burt + Nancy [-?-]

Family of Frederick Burt and Nancy [-?-]

Frederick Burt, son of Joseph Burt and Mary "Polly" Holt, was born about 1800 in North Carolina [1,2,3], presumably in Cumberland County.

Frederick Burt was married about 1822 [4] in North Carolina to Nancy [-?-]. Nancy was born about 1803 in North Carolina [1,2,3].

There is no listing for Frederick Burt as head of household in the 1820 North Carolina census, but he may have been enumerated with his uncle David Holt, who was guardian [5] to the Burt children after the death of Frederick's father Joseph.

Based on the birthplaces of his children, Frederick apparently moved to Tennesee between 1825 -1829 [6]. He was living in Franklin County in 1830 when the census was recorded:

Frederick Burt 1m < 5, 2m 5-10, 1m 30-40, 1f 20-30

In June 1848, Frederick Burt was granted 1000 acres of land in Franklin County, presumably for military service [7].

Frederick Burt's name appears in Franklin County court records in 1848 in connection with James Roger Jr., who appears to have been trying to run a tavern without a license [8].

The household was enumerated in Franklin Co., Tennessee as follows in 1850:

   Family #1530, p. 227
    Burt, Frederick 50 b NC
    Burt, Nancy 47 b NC
    Burt, James A. 25
    Burt, Thomas G. 21
    Burt, Wm. W. 15
    Burt, Charles T. 12
    Burt, Willis B. 10
    Baget, Mary J. 7
    Blye, Eliz. 18

In 1860 when the census was recorded, only one son, Willis B. Burt, remained in the home of Frederick and Nancy Burt:

   Franklin Co., #128, p. 187
    Burt, F. (m) 60
    Burt, Nancy 57
    Burt, Willis B. 18

The following transaction between Frederick Burt and his son Charles was recorded in 1865 [9]:

Franklin County Deed Book 1, p. 568
8 Jul 1865

F. Burt (seal)

Frederick Burt owned additional land in District 15 of Franklin County, as shown by this court record [10]:

By 1870, Frederick and Nancy Burt were living in the household of their son James J. Burt:

Nancy Burt apparently died before 1880, as the 1880 census listed Frederick, but not Nancy, living in the household of their son Charles Burt in Moore County:

    The following Mary & C.
