Dear Sarah,

How nice to hear from you -- and in such a timely fashion! I'd love to be
included on the BURT e-mail list.

I have information on several generations of BURTs, particularly Williams and
William Henrys, from the Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia areas. I'd
be happy to send a GEDCOM file to Barbara Goodson or anyone else. Also, I've
transcribed a copy of the Will in my possession and can send it to anyone
interested, just let me know what file format (I work cross-platform, Macs
and PCs).

Do you know if anyone is working on this FROM the North Carolina area? In
other words, are they available to look up apecific information...

Thanks again for the quick response. Lookinf forward to your next
communication.

Subj:	Burt Info - A Repeat?

Hi everyone

This may well be a repeat; I seem to have some recollection of such; but I
could not find this with my filing system. (System? )

In the book "Virginia Historic Marriage Record, Mecklenburg County
Marriages, 1765-1853" by John Vogt & T. William Kethley, Jr., 1989, Iberian
Publishing Company, page 26:

Burt, William and Susanna Sims, 3 Nov 1812, bondsman Harry Sims, consent -
Joseph Sims, guardian for his sister.

In the book "Cumberland Parish, Lunenburg County, Virginia, 1746-1816,
Vestry Book 1746-1816" by Landon C. Bell, originally published 1930,
reprinted 1994, Genealogical Publishing company, page 308:

1787 December 26, William Burt & Patsey Daniel, Prince George County.

Apparently, as I read the text, John Cameron maintained his own register of
marriages and was a "dissenter" concerning returning his marriage to state
officials. At the time of the above marriage, and again as I read the text,
he was the rector of Nottoway County but performed marriages in eleven
Southside Counties.

Maybe this might help some one as we try to separate one from the other
these various William Burt fellows.

Bill

I have a copy from the Bedford County (TN) Records Chancery - State Library,
1848

Page 417 - Suit against Richard SIMS, Wm. H. BURT (d. 1849), Susan BURT (his
wife, b. 1796, d. 1876) $1407.26 second payment on lands of Lewis A. Boyd,
dec. sold by W. Wallace White and wife - defendents failed to pay and land
went back to Whites.

Known: Mrs. Susan BURT (maiden name not known) was born in Granville Co., NC
(This info. from newspaper obit.)
Speculation: Richard SIMS is a brother? Father? Other male relative? Anyone
have a piece to this puzzle? Possibly even the "Susanna" of the referenced
message? (Sixteen is young to be married, but not unheard of...) There is
some rumor that the family was in Virginia prior to N.C.

Other William BURT info: (Since I'm new to the list, I have no idea if this
has been passed on before)

Wake County, N.C. Marriages (Microfilm State Library, TN)

William BURT a J.P. in 1843 and 1845

We now know that Nancy Burt Kimball, daughter of William Burt Sr. of
Halifax Co., NC moved to Morgan Co. AL. Here are some census listings in
Morgan Co., AL in 1850 that should be of interest (have I sent these
  previously?):

Can anyone identify any of these Burts? I know I've seen the name
Paschal Burt in North Carolina. In particular:
  Orange Co.

  Wake Co.

Actually, looking through some earlier e-mail, I see this note from Lisa
  Cook:

>3 applications on:
>John Burt and Priscilla Sentor, through child Hardy and another through the
>child Mary

>children:
>Hardy b. 1789 m. Martha "Patsey" Lane 3/12/1811 in Wake Co.

>Mary (Polly) m. Mark Christian
>Elizabeth m. Joel or George Nash

It looks like those Burts in Morgan Co., AL probably were children of
John Burt m. Delia above. (since one of the household members is Delia
Burt, aged 66 in 1850, b NC). Do we have anything more on the above
  folks?

Hi Everyone,

I volunteered to serve as editor of our Autauga County Genealogical Soc.
quarterly and have been very busy the last few weeks working on that. I
have a stack of e-mails that I have printed out and am planning to reply to
one of these days.

According to the information that I have, it was James Mathews, bro. of
Jeremiah, who married Sarah Brinkley. I am attaching the group sheets that
I have on these Mathews.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
John

Hi Everyone,

I've got a possible husband for Mary Marshall who married a Moncrief. Among
some materials submitted for our Autauga Co., AL vertical files were some
Moncrief records. (Moncrief is an established Autauga surname).

Michael Kelly of Waco, TX submitted a group sheet for Caleb Moncrief, b.
1747 Currituck Co., NC d. 1804 in Unknown. Parents = Wm. Alexander Moncrief
and Elizabeth Simmons. Caleb married Mary ______. Children: Delilah
Moncrief, David Moncrief b. 1783 Halifax Co., NC d. 1835 Montgomery Co.,
AL; Rebecca Moncrief b. 1784, marr. 1801 John Fleming; Caleb Moncrief, Jr.
b. 1792 d. 1 Apr 1835 Montgomery Co., AL, m 4 Jul 1820 Jones Co., GA Nancy
Reeves; John Moncrief b. 1799 d. 5 May 1859 Meriwether, GA m. Martha Owens;
Wiley Moncrief b. 1802 d. 20 Dec 1867 Lincoln Co., GA m. 1829 Ann
Littleton, m2 Jane Walton.

Barbara, this might interest you. Caleb Moncrief and Mary (Marshall?)'s son
David Moncrief m. Elizabeth ____. Their son Caleb m. Martha Blanks Vincent
(dau. of Manoah Vincent & Nancy Gilliam Dunman). Their son William Monoah
Moncrief, b. 7 Apr 1843, m. 25 Oct 1865 Prattville, AL Julia Virginia
GOODSON. Is she kin????

Elizabeth Simmons Moncrief, mother of Caleb Moncrief, Sr., died 1784
Halifax Co., NC.

What do yall think?? Does anyone have any Christian names of the
sons-in-law of John and Sarah Burt Marshall?

Regards,
John

  Hi Gerry,

Last Friday I went to the Autauga County courthouse and looked carefully
at the estate settlement of John Burt. One heir (apparently husband or
widow of an unnamed daughter) was named John Avent. So I believe that
Mary Burt was a daughter of John Burt who died in Autauga County ca
1827. If you haven't already, look at
http://www.tntech.edu/~beg/burt/john.html. Can you please provide some
more details and documentation on Mary's birthdate and marriage?

  Regards,

  Barbara

P.S. John Brown happened to look at the same record in the courthouse
earlier that day and agrees that the name was John Avent.

Last Friday, John Brown, Sarah Sharpless and I had a good time at the
Georgia archives in Atlanta. It was really nice to meet Burt cousins -
hopefully we can do this again sometime (and perhaps others will be able
to join us!). I collected some new information that I'll be sending
  along shortly.

At any rate, one of the things we talked about afterwards (on the way to
supper at Sprayberry's Barbecue) was copyrighting the Burt Web pages. I
would like to do this in such a way that the information is freely
available to all, but cannot be sold; I'd hate to see all our hard work
end up on somebody's for-profit CD. Does anyone have any objections or
  comments?

Another thing that I've been meaning to do, but just never got around
to, was a list of folks who are researching/contributing to these pages.
An example of what I am talking about may be seen at:
     http://www.tntech.edu/~beg/goodson/researchers.html
If you'd like to be included on such a page for Burt researchers (and I
hope everyone will), please send me a note to let me know. I will not
put anyone on the list unless I hear from him/her.

  Regards,

  Barbara

Here's my abstract of the will of Jesse Burt; I didn't make a photocopy
since things were fairly crowded at the archives (we would have
practically had the place to ourselves except a group of 40 folks from

Note the "additional" son Henry H. Burt and also it seems to me that
Jesse Burt didn't care very much for James Bigbee!

Hello everyone,

When re-reading the information on Wm Burt m. Sallie Ballard, was intrigued
by the "Devereavi[ix?]" name in the deed record.

Found the following from the Vaughn Ballard, Family Histories, 2320 Country
Green Lane, Arlington, TX 76011 (817) 277-3281 (On the Web)

Maybe, Salumith Ballard's brother? (The age is questionable for her father
compared to possible birthdate of William Burt).

Still searching,

In a message dated 97-06-23 20:42:48 EDT, you write:

<< While you are looking at the different
William's, what about the William Burt in Brunswick Co.? Do you think that
it is the same one that was in Greensville? ...also posted the
information from Bute, Warren and Franklin from when I was there a couple
of weeks ago...>>

Lea -

Whoa!, When was this - and how can I access "the digest"? I just joined the
list a couple weeks ago myself, Sarah forwarded my name to the list. Ummm,
I'll have to try to find that posting. Also, don't remember seeing the other
county name listings, I'll look for them too.

Spreadsheets could work - that's the same idea as indexing and
cross-referencing. Found an old map of NC (and the VA border) dated 1749 nad
it clearly shows Fountain Creek, mentioned in the Greensville will. Also some
of the other deed references (like Hawtree), I'm sorting it out now. This may
take several days...

To the list:
We've been discussing mapping the various Wm., Rich. and John Burts land
deeds...Anyone else in on this?

Hope to make copies of maps available as .gifs or .jpgs for Barbara to post
at the site.

Regards,
Donna

Subj:	Burt Web Page Updates

  All

I've just made the following updates/additions:

  1. Added info on William Burt of Warren Co., NC linking him to Richard
Burt the elder (thanks Donna for the good work!). I've rearranged his
position in the Burt pantheon on the main page to fit under Richard Burt
  the elder.

  2. Added a page for William Burt who died in Halifax Co., NC ca 1805.
  The exact URL is http://www.tntech.edu/~beg/burt/william_1805.html
Please let me know of any additional information or errors.

  3. Started (but not linked in yet) a list of contributors/researchers.
  The URL is http://www.tntech.edu/~beg/burt/researchers.html. Please
check it out to make sure that your information is correct. If you do
not find your name listed there and it should be (or you want it to be),
let me know. Any omissions were not intentional! Remember I won't add
you to the page unless you give me permission to do so.

Subj:	Another William Burt

Hi every body!!

With a chuckle, now, I want to add some information about still ANOTHER
William Burt. I received this information about a year ago from Charles E.
Burt, Jr. of Dawsonville, GA. The only verificatioon that I know of now is
the birth of the two sons of Elias Burt in Isle of Wight County, VA which
is recorded on our Web pages. It is my belief that this William Burt
probably died in SC, about 1782 as indicated. But, no proof. Neither do I
have any information as to the route used to get from Virginia to SC.

Do any of you have any other data that might tie in to any of this?

And, incidentally, I still have no clue as to whether or not this Elias is
the same one that came into Middlesex County, Va or not.

Regards to all.

Bill A

All,

I just happened to be in the Columbus library and copied a book, _Anson
County, North Carolina, Abstracts of Early Records_, May Wilson McBee. If
I'm understanding the preface correctly, she abstracted a portion of the
scads of deeds and records in Anson. I'm not very good with county formation
in NC, but Anson covered a huge area at one point. Also, it's on the SC
border -- I need to read up on border disputes between NC & SC. Some of the
deeds in her book mention buyers in SC and sellers in NC -- and vice versa.

And...

DW: I found the above on the Web, plus several other Cloptons sites. they
have this family documented back hundreds of years. I got curious about the
name Walter Clopton Ballard, as well as Devereaux. Although we do not have a
marriage date as proof, it would seem reasonable to assume that due to the
unusual naming patterns, Elizabeth married to William Ballard is probably
Elizabeth Clopton.

DW: sorry to repeat so much of the last message, but it all goes together.

I passed on some of this other stuff to (someone on the list, may have been

this Wm. BURT, mostly of Warren Co., but sometimes of Halifax, when in
association with certain common names (ARRINGTON, BALLARD, COX, GIBBS,
HARRIS, some MARSHALLs and MATTHEWS, STOKES) is William BURT son of the
Greensville Co. one and husband o f Salumith BALLARD. Still collating this

Am forwarding this to Barbara and Bill Adams as well

This is purely a gut instinct, see what you think. Suspicion: John Burt, son
of John and Grace, brother of Richard and Joseph, is not too well documented
yet. References to land deeds in Edgecombe Co., but not about his family. He
probably had children...another William even. One of these "stray" Williams
is probably his.

Yes, just more questions.

Thanks for offering to send the maps you have. Look forward to seeing what
transpires.

I certainly agree with that assessment!! We all owe her a debt of thanks.

Incidentally, and as I told Donna earlier, I have snail-mailed a lot of
this latest info to Chuck Wallace in San Diego who is researching that
William Burt line. Haven't heard from him yet. Snail mail!!

I have been tied up somewhat trying to learn a new genealogy program, The
Master Genealogist. Having trouble because of its extreme flexibility. Also
I have had two meetings this week, not ordinarily involved with but they do
take time. Also a family reunion on my maternal side starts this afternoon
up near Dallas. (Sarah, out at Crandall actually.)

I will try to get more involved in the nitty gritty of this next week. Okay?

Donna, a personal thanks. Lea, "keep your head up" and don't get
overwhelmed; we will make it.

A while back I was able to disprove my ancestry back to a Hansford fellow
who was hanged for his participation in Bacon's rebellion in Virginia in
the 1670s. A little over two weeks ago, I was able to prove that
relationship but through a different daughter than others use. So, back and
forth, eh what, Lea!!

Y'all take care. And for whomever might be interested in our weather; here
at College Station, Texas, we have had well over 6 inches of rain this
month of June. If some of you will stop buy, I will share some tomatoes
with you. (Hello there Barbara, how are your tomatoes about now?)

Regards.

Barbara,

In placing these Burts, I am a little concerned about the placement of some
of the William's. Here are some of my reasons....

1) Bute Co., NC was formed from Granville Co., NC in 1769.
2) Warren Co., NC was formed from Bute Co. in 1779.
3) Franklin Co., NC was formed from Bute Co. in 1779
4) Halifax Co., NC was formed from Edgecomb Co. in 1759
5) Mecklenburg Co., NC was formed from Anson Co. in 1762

So... If you have a William Burt in Bute Co. in 1769 and in Warren Co. in
1779, it could quite possibly be the SAME William Burt.

Now we have this marriage record in Bute Co.

Bute Co., NC
Burt, William	Spouse : Turner, Ann Marriage date : 30/Mar/1779
Note of consent from Thomas Turner, father of Ann addressed to Thomas
Machen, Clerk of Warren Co. The BM was Henry Turner, brother of Ann.

: These are surely the William Burt in Warren County who married Salumith

Burt
: of Greensville Co., VA.

Salusmith Ballard's parents were definitely in Halifax Co., NC.

I personally think that the original land deeds should be checked before
this assumption is made. This was definitely an oversight on my part.
Perhaps somewhere down the line, the wife signed off her dower rights.
That would eliminate an assumption. I personally find it hard to believe
that one William owned land in Brunswick, Greensville and Warren Co. I can
believe that the William Burt in Brunswick Co., VA could be the same one as
in Greensville.

Now, to further complicate the issue....
What relationship does this William (guardian of Ransom Davis' orphans)
have to Elizabeth Burt, daughter of Joseph Burt and daughter in law of Mary
DAVIS Marshall? Also see below....

This does not answer any questions, but does lead to more. I will go back
into the Brunswick Co. records to see if I can find anything else on this
line. I think that I, personally am going to hold off assigning these to
any location until I can possibly find dower rights on any of the
properties. If you know of any, I would appreciate hearing about it. I
tried to visit the web page to see the other William Burt of Warren, but
couldn't get there. It gave a server error.

I think that Donna might have the right idea in plotting out the land
records.

Does any of this make ANY sense???

Thanks,

Uh... I think so. (Too many William Burts... argh!).

Forgive me for being dense, but is the heart of your concern that the
William Burt named as "my brother" in the will of Elizabeth Kilby and as
"my uncle" in the will of William Gibbs (both wills in Warren County)
may not have been the William Burt m Salumith Ballard who was in Warren
County, but perhaps William Burt m Ann Turner? Or another William Burt
  entirely?

Unless there is a piece of info I'm not seeing, I can't argue with that.
If we could establish that William Burt in the above wills was residing
in Warren County, I would be inclined to identify him as Salumith's
husband, as I don't think we've found any other William Burt (other than
his son) residing in Warren Co. during that time period. Are we
comfortable with the Web page saying that William Burt (m Salumith
Ballard) was *probably* the son of William Burt of Greensville Co., VA.

Which page were you having trouble accessing?
  http://www.tntech.edu/~beg/burt/william_warren.html is the page for
William and Salumith, is this the one you mean?

It looks like we've got a lot of circumstancial evidence that William
Burt of Warren Co., d. 1823, husband of Salumith, was indeed married to
Salumith Ballard. Have I missed the direct evidence?

I think it would be helpful to forward this discussion to "the list" -
do you mind if I forward your note (and my response) to everyone?

  Barbara

Yes, this is exactly what I am trying to say. You said it so well.....

Where was Salusmith's father's will signed???? Halifax Co. Where are the
Turner's from??? Southampton into Bute/Franklin/Warren.

My second point is that deed in Brunswick Co., VA between Samuel BASS and
William BURT. Coincidentally, I have a Kilby BASS that is going to tie in
here somewhere as well..... Probably coincidence, but....there is another
factor that has not been addressed here. The BASS family is of Native
American heritage as is MANY of the Turner's. Davis and Blunt/Blount are
also involved in intermarriages with Native Americans. As a point of
interest, the last Nottoway Indian to die on the reservation in Southampton
Co., VA was named Edy TURNER. She was Queen of that tribe. Long story as
to the reasons of migration from county to county, but the bottom line is
that these families kept together for hundreds of years. This was partly
due to the Native American heritage and marrying "like".

But you have....the point that I was trying to make is that Warren Co. was
formed from Bute Co. I found in reading these county records that these
people would just as easily go into Bute or Warren Co. for transactions.
Who is to say that the William Burt who married Ann Turner did not live in
Warren Co.? 1779 in the year that they got married and Warren Co. was
formed.
:
: Which page were you having trouble accessing?
: http://www.tntech.edu/~beg/burt/william_warren.html is the page for
: William and Salumith, is this the one you mean?
:

Yes, thanks I was able to get to it tonight.... This brings about another
interesting point... Samuel Marshall is the brother to David Marshall
father of Stephen Marshall that married Elizabeth Burt.

: It looks like we've got a lot of circumstancial evidence that William
: Burt of Warren Co., d. 1823, husband of Salumith, was indeed married to
: Salumith Ballard. Have I missed the direct evidence?

Direct evidence is what I am trying to find. I do not have any DIRECT
evidence to argue this case. I am merely trying to point out other
indirect that may help in proving ANY William Burt.
:
: I think it would be helpful to forward this discussion to "the list" -
: do you mind if I forward your note (and my response) to everyone?

I welcome all of our communications being forwarded to the list, but do ask
that you include the information that has been clipped at the top. I am
sure that the other names will probably tie in to other cousin's collateral
lines. It may be of help to them and us.

Thank you for all of your help....

  All -

We've had a number of folks joining us as time goes by, that have missed
out on a lot of earlier messages with lots of great information. I have
been trying to incorporate most of that information into the Burt web
pages, but it's taking me a while!

If no one objects, I will take all the messages I've received through
our list, as well as some early ones sent to me that are directly
relevant, and make them available via Web pages. Here's an example if
  you want to see:
      http://www.tntech.edu/~beg/burt/archive2.html

If this is OK, should I link them from the Burt web page? Or leave them
unlinked and just publicize them to "newcomers?"

  Barbara

Hello everyone!

Not to leave anyone out, Lea, Barbara, Bill and I have been have
conversations focusing on the multiple William BURTS in the Warren, Halifax,

One of the directions we toook was through collateral families, either

recent back-and-forth. Everyone's welcome to pipe in!

Good evening,

This last post has peaked my interest!

My Thackston ancestors second marriage was to Sarah Elebank. She was the
widow of Daniel Elebank who owned property in Lunenburg Co., VA and Halifax
Co., NC. Some records show that Daniel and Sarah had one child, Elizabeth
Elebank, who married John Jones, Jr. in Prince Edward Co., VA.

This Yankee Burt might get connected to ya'll yet!

From _The Alstons and Allstons of North and South Carolina_, Joseph A.
Groves, MD. *No* idea if this has any connection or if it is even correct:

William WILLIAMS = Eliza or Ruina WEBB. (Groves is very hard to follow. I
don't know if I'm getting the William WILLIAMS confused or if he's getting
the WEBB girls confused.) Among the children:
Robert Webb WILLIAMS = Hartwell Hodge DAVIS (dau. of Archibald DAVIS &
Elizabeth HILLIARD)

---------------------------
Henry Guston WILLIAMS (b. 24 May 1765) = Lucy TUNSTALL
Mary Tempie WILLIAMS = Stirling Harwell GEE
Bettie Pettway GEE = Samuel PERRY
Mary Boddie PERRY [b. c. 1852]= John Alexander BURT. "After the death of
his wife, John A. Burt m. Mary Louisa Gee, dau. of Stirling Harwell Gee and
aunt of his 1st wife."

-----------------

Henry Guston WILLIAMS and William WILLIAMS were brothers -- sons of Capt.
Solomon WILLIAMS (m. 1764) & Tempie BODDIE.

Capt. Solomon WILLIAMS was the son of Samuel WILLIAMS & Elizabeth ALSTON --
the same Elizabeth Alston who may have m. (2) Richard BURT.
