I received the letter from C. W. Wallace a few days ago. I'm not clear
as to what proof he has that William Burt ("Sr.") of Warren County came
from Mecklenburg County. That information has indeed appeared in print -
the source appears to be "Va. DAR Roster, p. 445" (if someone has access
to that, please look to see if we can get further info).
I'm having difficulty placing William Burt in Warren County before about
1788 or so. One part of the problem revolves around a deed where Jonas
Wilkins (of Halifax County) sells land to William Burt (of Warren
County) - the conveyance is dated 1778 but was not recorded until 1792.
I think it is possible that 1788 was the actual date of the transaction,
not 1778.
The possibility that William came from Mecklenburg County is intriguing,
since Mathew and Moody Burt of your line were both in Mecklenburg
County. You'd think that with William straddling the line between Warren
and Halifax County that there surely was a connection with the Halifax
County Burts, but maybe not. All the deeds that I can clearly identify
as belonging to the Warren County William do not show the presence of
any other Burts as witnesses (unlike many of the Halifax Co. Burts and
their transactions).
At any rate, I've pieced together what I could and it is now at

always share additions or corrections. Ed Burt has been silent so far -
isn't he collecting information on the Warren County Burts?

I visited the Alabama Archives yesterday and found some information on
Hiram Read, and later as I was going through some material (I'm still
trying to get organized, but it may be a losing battle! :-)) I found my
source of the above data.
First, from the Archives, I found "Lee County and Her Forebears", edited by
Alexander Nunn, 1982:
p. 205 Hiram Read (1801-1882) m Elizabeth G. (1811-1899). Hiram was born
Halifax Co., NC; Elizabeth born Columbia, SC. They moved to Auburn in early
1800s. At one time operated Wright's Mill south of Auburn. Both buried
Auburn Cemetery. Son Dr. Andrew Hamil Read (1836-19110 m Betty Dowdell
(1845-19050. Served in Civil War; practiced medicine in LaFayette, moved to
Pilot Point, TX and returned to Opelika where he lived and practiced
medicine until his death. Their 8 children: George, Jim, Will, Render,
Andrew, Rosie, Susie, and Ella. Grandchildren's surnames Read, Chester,
Holmes, and Stowe. (Written by W. F. Chester).
David Thomason of Birmingham (who sent me the Daniel Grant Owen info) sent
copies of much of his Burt research. He above dates on Hiram and Maria are
from him. His notes, some obviously from the Nunn book) say that Margaret
Maria Burt, dau. of Joseph Burt of Halifax Co., NC (parents are in error).
They were married 19 Mar 1822. Margaret died 30 Jul 1830 after giving birth
to 4th child, Emily. She was only 24 yrs. old. Hiram then married Elizabeth
George Willis 10 Feb 1830. Hiram was a minister, physician, successful
attorney, Georgia legislator 1837-41. At one time operated Wright's Mill
south of Auburn. Trustee Jenkins Academy. Buried Pine Hill Cemetery,
Auburn. Information from Archives, Talbot, Harris and Muscogee Counties in
Georgia, also Lee County, AL court records. Information from book by Nunn,
Lee County and Her Forebears.
He also lists information from Mrs. Mary Summers of Opelika, AL. Family
Bible records of Read Family Birth, Marriage, Death Dates-- also parents of
Hiram Read, Asa Read and Maria Hulme, Jesse Read his father. Hiram's
mother Maria Hulme died after giving birth to Hiram, 16 Apr 1801. Military
record Macon Co., AL Home Guards 5 Oct 1863 muster roll Auburn, AL. John
Dorby's Macon Reserves. "Glimpes Into the Past from my Grandfather's Trunk"
by John Peavy Wright-- Hiram bought Wright Mill from A. M. Kimbrough and
wife Nancy for $3,000 attested by Nathaniel Hurt and W.E. Lloyd, both were
sons in law.
He lists children of MM and Hiram as:

William W. Burt (1812-1878) m Jane E. Laseur (1815-1863). He was an
original land owner and settled in Salem, Russell Co. (now Lee Co.) in
1835. A prosperous farmer and very active in the community; gave land land
for the Methodist Church and Cemetery. Signed the deed in 1853 to the
railroad for right of way. A member of Salem Masonic Lodge. Bith buried in
Methodist Cemetery. Children: Mary, Emily, William and the noted teacher R.
E. L. Burt (Ed Burt). [I'd bet the family farm that R. E. L. stands for
Robert Edward Lee]
Concerning the above, I found in the Confederate Service Records microfilm:
W. W. Burt, Pvt., age 52, enlisted 13 Aug 1864 in David Read's Russell Co.
Reserves, Co. D Alabama 1st Class Militia. (Home Guard).
Barbara, have you or anyone else figured out who was the William Marshall
Burt who married Amanda D. Booth? He was born 25 Nov 1818, m. 26 Oct 1846
Troup Co., GA. He died 25 Jul 1875 and she died 3 Nov 1866. You mentioned
before that some time in the 1850s, they settled at Salem, Russell Co., AL
where William Washington Burt, a second cousin of their children was
already living.

I hope you haven't been put off by our (my?) nit-pickiness... please
continue to contribute and don't be afraid of questioning! I wish that
someone had stressed careful documentation when I first got started. I'm
still striving to be careful about it as well and having to redo years
of work.
One thing I would recommend to *every* genealogist is joining the
National Genealogical Society. It probably won't help you (directly at
least) find that elusive ancestor, but the journal you get contains
excellent articles that emphasize correct research methodology and
documentation, point out over-looked sources of information, and cover
pitfalls to avoid. Some of the best articles are those where someone
takes a "well-researched family genealogy" and shows how the genealogy is
wrong due to unwarrented assumptions and inaccurate, unverifiable
information, and then proceeds to construct the correct genealogy. It's
eye-opening! (Their website is at http://www.genealogy.org/~ngs/).

Subj: The Identity of William Burt Sr.?
All -
I've been thinking a little bit about William Burt Sr. who died in Halifax
Co., NC in 1824, and four of whose daughters married sons of Joseph Burt. A
number of folks have speculated that William Burt Sr. was a brother to
Joseph Burt, and hence the marriages were between first cousins (not
unheard of). One troubling aspect of this assigment is that of the six
children of John and Grace Burt of Gloucester County named in the Abingdon
Parish register, William does not appear. (Grace in fact dies in 1835; the
marriage later that year of John Burt to Ann Howard is probably that of
John Burt Jr. and at any rate the children of that marriage named up until
1745 do not include William Burt).
I'd like to propose the following: William Burt Sr. was the son of Richard
Burt (Joseph Burt's brother) and Rebecca Stephens. Here are some "clues"
that lead me to this tenative conclusion:
- From the will of Richard Burt of Halifax County, NC, it appears that
two children lived to adulthood: John Burt (b 1747 Gloucester Co., VA)
and William Burt (birthdate not known, but probably about 1750).
- Richard Burt's son William was living in Halifax County, NC at least
until 1793 (see deeds I sent). A William Burt first appears in the
Halifax County tax list in 1783 and William Burt Sr., definitely the
one who died in 1824 from family composition, is listed in 1786 along
with another, apparently more recently-married, William Burt.
- One of William Burt Sr's daughters was named Rebecca (?after her
mother Rebecca Stephens?).
- When Richard Burt died, he specified in his will that all his land
be divided in half, with John Burt getting everything south of the
dividing line and William Burt getting everything north of that line.
William Burt Sr. owned quite a bit of land (much of which I cannot
account for through deed records, although my info is imcomplete),
some of it either identical or adjacent (I can't tell which) to the
land inherited by William Burt, son of Richard Burt.
The above does not constitute proof, but it does provide what seems to me
to be a more plausible explanation. If we could get some good maps of
18th/19th century Halifax County showing the watercourses, I believe we
could map land ownership and either construct a "prepondence of the
evidence" argument for William Burt Sr.'s father being Richard or rule it
out. Does anyone have access to such material? Or, do you see a problem
with my suggested conclusion? If my guess is correct, this would make his
daughters 1st cousins once-removed, rather than 1st cousins, of Joseph
Burt's sons.

I can't answer your question yet, but I will check my records. There are a
lot of William Burts in that time period! Most are related to our John Burt
line or the Richard Burt line. I am involved in researching the Burt line
in VA, NC, SC, GA and AL with an outstanding group of people. I am

Barbara, this looks good. It makes more sense that him being a brother of

Everyone,
I'm writing because (1) at some point or another we corresponded about the
HURT family or (2) I saved a message you posted to the genealogy forum on
CompuServe about the HURT family -- figuring it might come in handy later.
I'm part of a small group of researchers trying to straighten-out the BURT
family of VA and of Halifax Co., NC > GA (and then points West). Below are
HURT / BURT connections:
1. Joel Hurt BURT, reported son of Zacheus BURT & Elizabeth BURT (Elizabeth
is reportedly Zacheus' first cousin, therefore BURT is her maiden name), b.
1807, Warren Co., GA, d. 1847, Talbot Co., GA. Source: _A Rockaway in
Talbot, Vol. 1_, William H. Davidson. We have not determined if Joel Hurt
BURT was named after a relative or a friend and would welcome any help with
this.
2. Elisha Fletcher HURT m. Amanda MARSHALL, 1842, Talbot Co., GA. Amanda
MARSHALL was the granddau. of Stephen MARSHALL & Elizabeth BURT. Source: _A
Rockaway in Talbot, Vol. 2_, William H. Davidson.
And there is also the possibility of HURT and BURT being confused in the
records.
Allied families include MARSHALL, GIBSON, FLUELLEN, MATHEWS, possibly
TARPLEY, READ (REED), COLEMAN, OWEN.

William Hurt was named Elizabeth Hurt b. abt 1763. She married William

Wow, it's really tempting to suggest that this Elizabeth Hurt was the
wife of William Burt Sr, since two of his daughters passed the Hurt name
along to Joel Hurt Burt and Martha Hurt Burt. 1763 might make Elizabeth
a bit too young - I guess the only birthdate we currently know for the
children is that of Elizabeth Burt (1780), wife of Zacheus Burt. Sarah,
I'm assuming that Joel Hurt above is the one in Halifax Co., NC?
I have tenatively assigned Elizabeth Hurt as the wife of William Burt
Sr. on his Web page; if anyone can add or subtract from this guess
please do.
On a related note, John Brown and Sarah Sharpless have expressed

I *think* that Joel is the one in Halifax, but I'll have to look into it. I
just haven't done enough HURT research to know for sure. As I understand --
simply from reading various undocumented e-mails -- there were several Joel
HURTs floating around at the same time (VA>NC>GA). The most famous one was
instrumental in the development of Atlanta.
Also (and just throwing this out for whatever it's worth), I had an odd,
fleeting thought that many of you might have considered already -- what if
some of the wives of the BURT men were widows (first married to BURTs) and
not cousins, etc. Need to re-look at sources, etc. As I said, this was a
quick thought that just popped into my mind and I haven't given it any
serious consideration.
If Elizabeth HURT was b. in 1763, she would have been 17 at the time of
Elizabeth BURT's birth -- sounds sort-of normal for the time, but then a lot
of women in my families seem to have married between 14 - 18 years.
Still interested in the Atlanta trip -- not just for research, but also
because Mick's has great hamburgers and coconut cream pie.

I think Putnam County, Georgia deed book 26 p 160 rules that out: in it,
Jesse Burt, Martha Burt, Zacheus Burt, Elizabeth Burt, James Burt,
Rebecca Burt, Richard Burt, and Margaret Burt, all of Putnam County,
Georgia, on 5 April 1824 granted power of attorney to James G. Burt in
order that he could go to Halifax County and recover assets due them
from "our father and father-in-law's estate, viz Wm. Burt Senr decd late
of North Carolina, Halifax County." (The will of William Burt Sr. names
among his children Martha, Elizabeth, Rebecca and Margaret Burt, but not
any of the men above, who we know/believe were sons of Joseph Burt).

Yes, but Elizabeth may not have been the oldest. If the naming order of
children in William Burt Sr.'s will is indicative of birth order,
William C. Burt and Rebecca Burt were born first. (Of course, besides
the assumption they were arranged from oldest to youngest, there's

Ref. Source: "Colonial Records", Vol. VIII, 1769-1771, pp. 81-82 and

Contemporaries," pp.87-93, by Lefler; also: "The War of The Regulators
and The Battle of Alamance, May 16, 1771, by William S. Powell.
The below men signed a petition known today as the Regulators Petition
seeking redress for problems faced in their dealings with the King's
appointed representatives. Some of the surnames are similar to recent
queries seen on Roots-L and NC/SC-Roots listings. I hope this helps
some of you discover the residence of your ancestor.
It also contains a list of names and William Burt is one (about 150 names).

was the will of David Marshall, 1785, Halifax Co. will book #3, p. 82
and 152. This is in contradiction to Halifax County deed book 26, p.
160, which shows Rebecca living in 1824; however, another source [2]
gives the parents of Joseph Tarpley Burt, b 1812, as James (b 1786) and
Mary ( b 1790) Burt. One possibility is that the marriage of James Burt
and Polly Rogers in 1825 was that of James Burt after the death of
Rebecca

I'm a descendant of David MARSHALL (thru son, Stephen, who m. Elizabeth Burt,
dau. of Joseph). I have a copy of David's will (written 1 Nov. 1784) and he
simply lists all his daus. (9 of them) by their given names (including a
Mary) -- there is nothing in the will itself showing a marriage for any of
the daus. A copy of the will is at the end of this message. Now, I don't
have copies of any estate records -- and that might provide a clue for
marriages. I got my copy of the will from the NC Archives. Mitchell's
_North Carolina Wills_, gives the location as Halifax Co. WB 3, p. 82.
Joseph Burt's will is on p. 152 -- but he certainly doesn't mention the
wives of any of his sons.

Hi every one
Have returned, and safely. Had a good trip. Visited with our daughter, one
of our grandsons and with Irelene's niece. Also visited with a long time
friend briefly.
Returned through Birmingham and met a perfectly delightful lady, Emmy Jane
Newman. She is a sister to Richard Griscom. We had a very productive visit
Tuesday afternoon at the church where she does some volunteer work at their
library. Then, Wednesday we went to the Birmingham Public Library; a very
productive outing too.
From all of the discussions, research and also coming home and checking out
so "county formation times" in Virginia, I did want to share some of these
with you. First, is that Lunenburg county, VA was formed in 1740. Then
Mecklenburg and Charlotte Counties, Va were formed, effective 1765, from
Lunenburg County. Thus, some one living in Lunenburg County before 1765
could, and without moving, then be found to be living in either Mecklenburg
or Charlotte county after 1765. My early indication is that to be in
Mecklenburg county after 1765 would require a move to be found later in
Charlotte county. This would probably be the situation of "my" Mathew Burt.
I bring up these dates so as to compare with the information I previously
posted of information received from Chuck Wallace, namely:

Mathew Burt was in Lunenburg County about 1760-1764. There was also a John
Burt there by about the same time. I gather that this must have been a
brother because I do not believe that John, son of Mathew, would have been
old enough by that time to be owning land. (The will of Richard Burt the
elder identifies Mathew and John as grandsons, but I can not place either
as sons of Josias or William, and, therefore, conclude they were brothers
and sons of Moody Burt.)
The will of Mathew Burt does not include a son named William. However, it
seems possible that John Burt, whomever he might be, could well have had a
son named William. True, this does not tie to Mecklenburg County because
Mecklenburg was not formed at that time. In 1754, the area that was later
established as Mecklenburg was, in reality, Lunenburg County.
I have no clues as to where this John Burt moved or his family scattered to
after Lunenburg/Mecklenburg.
Then there is the William Burt of Greensville County who did have a son
named William.
So, we have at least one William Burt of Virginia that is unaccounted for
in later times as well as the possible parent for a child that could have
been born in Lunenburg/Mecklenburg County, VA.
Further too, I have a grandson of Richard the elder named Richard (he was a
son of Josias Burt) for whom I have no data after the will of Richard the
elder in 1745.
Consequently, and I am saying this with a grin on my face, if you have a
John or a William or a Richard for whom you lack any other connections, we
might try some of the above. Okay?

people of Virginia.
First, Elias Burt had a son William Burt, born 27 Mar 1736 in Isle of
Wight County, VA. Another source has it recorded that he moved to SC,
married an Anne Jones Friday 5 Mar 1775 in Charleston, SC and died in SC
about 1782.
Next, in the book "Revolutionary War Records, Mecklenburg County,
Virginia," compiled by Katherine B. Elliott, South Hill, Virginia, on page
200, she lists: "Some Mecklenburg People who went to other States," she
includes a William Burt who moved to Warren County, N.C. Unfortunately, she
lists no sources nor dates, as far as I could determine.

Tonight I received Halifax County deed abstracts books by Stephen
Bradley that I ordered. I'll be sending along information on some deeds
that I missed. In the meantime, I need some help....
As some of you know, my Burt connection is through Sarah Burt (dau. of
Joseph Burt Jr.) who married Henry Hunt. I've had no luck tracing
Henry's ancestry, knowing *only* that he was born in North Carlina in
1802. Tonight I found the following deed in Bradley's book:
Deed Book 21, p. 293 Josiah ODOM and his wife Charity (x) of Halifax
Co. to sd Charity's sons John HUNT and Henry HUNT. 24 Feb 1808. Deed
of gift and 5s. The property we now posess, namely 1 mare, 12 cattle,
5 beds and furniture, and any other property we may have. Wit: Jaratt
Vincent, John Vincent. Feb Ct 1809.
John Brown will recognize the name Jaratt Vincent, as he (or another
one) was the brother-in-law of my Henry Hunt. Two questions:
1. Was there a minimum age for a child to be a recipient of a deed of
gift? (If the above is my Henry Hunt, he would have been about 6
yrs old).
2. Does anyone have anything on Josiah and Charity Odom? (Or Charity
Hunt? Or Charity Brinkley?).
The reason I ask about Charity Brinkley is that the will of William
Brinkley who died in 1796 has a bequest to "Charity Hunt dau of Patty
Gay ... the land in Franklin Co. formerly belonging to Henry Hunt dec'd
her father..." rest of estate to Charity's children: William Brinkley
Hunt, Robert Hunt, Sarah Hunt and Polley Hunt, with one of the executors
being John Mathews. (This is from an abstract, I believe by Margaret
Hoffmann, who remarks "a very difficult will to read").
In 1806 in Halifax Co., William Brinkley Hunt, Robert Brinkley Hunt,
Sarah B[rinkley?] Hunt, and Polly Brinkley Hunt, through their guardian
Joseph Gee, petitoned to divide the land they had inherited from William
Brinkley. I doubt they all four had the same middle name; my guess is
that they were the children from a first marriage, and that Charity
re-married secondly to a Hunt. Whether this Charity Hunt is the one that
re-married Josiah Odom I do not know, although I suspect it.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I am sure you are correct. After looking again and thinking about what I
mentioned, I now believe it was merely an index of those Virginia patriots
in a different form, manner.
She also had one of "my" Burt guys included that went to South Carolina.
I am so glad that the four of you are going to Atlanta and the archives.
Good luck. As if you didn't already have "enough on your plate," I have a
Moody Burt that was in Georgia, somewhere over around Augusta real early. I
am not sure where Moody, an older brother to Mathew might have been. He
_could_have_been_ in the Augusta area. He was mentioned in the will of
Mathew dated in 1794 as being deceased.
Then there was a son of Mathew, also named Moody (but spelled variously,
including Mudy). I have some indications that he too was in that area
of Augusta. So, _IF_ you do happen to run across any one like that, I would
appreciate the little that you might find. And so I can easily separate
based on that date of 1794.
Incidentally, I am glad also that you are getting together 'cause that
might could be a forerunner to the idea I broached to you earlier of
getting together. I am a strong believer in sharing and hence I strongly
support our little e-mail group. But, also, I believe in face-to-face
sharing. I think you can get even more that way. I had a very good
experience with Emmy Jane. She had one idea that she had expressed in a
letter; I could not fully grasp it all until that face-to-face meeting. I
mentioned the possibility to Emmy Jane for such a meeting in Birmingham in
my "thank you" letter to her but have not had a response. My idea was to
see if we might meet at her church for talking, sharing and discussing and
then, if appropriate, go to the B'ham Public library, specifically their
Southern History Department, for whatever additional research we might feel
appropriate at that time. Comments?

Hi, y'all
This message is in three parts, three disconnected parts, really.
First, in re: William Burt who, according to some accounts, was born in
Mecklenburg Co., VA c1754 and died in Warren County, NC 8 July 1823.
QUESTION: Has any one ordered any information from DAR about this person?
If not, I will try to do so, but saw no need for duplication.
Second, in regard to John Burt of Gloucester.
Yesterday, I found a Richard (1) Burt family history written by Thelma
Ironmonger Hansford, written ca 1957. On page 14 thereof, she includes this:
"6. John (2) Burt born before 1693 was probably a son of (sic) Philip (1)
Burt. He and his family lived in Abingdon Parish in Gloucester County,
Virginia. Because of the similarity of names and the proximity of the two
homesites, there seems little doubt that these are of the same family.
John (2) Burt married Grace _____ before 1714. Their children were: . . . "
Two comments and two questions. First, I am sure that on the first line of
the above quotation, she is really referring to Richard (1) Burt, not
Philip (1) Burt. In the earlier portions of her manuscript, she has
referred only to a Richard (1) Burt. I believe the entry to be just a
momentary memory lapse as she was typing and a failure to catch it in her
proofing.
Secondly, I have extracted court records, dated in 1692 in York County, VA
involving Richard Burt and his wife Elizabeth Hansford Burt. I have also
extracted court records that clearly state that Richard Burt the elder and
his wife Elizabeth Hansford Burt had only one child, at least to adulthood,
and that he was Richard Burt the younger. We have no proof whatsoever as to
when Elizabeth Hansford Burt died, or what might have happened to her
marriage to Richard the elder. (The court records do present some basis for
such a comment.) Yet, we do know that Richard Burt the elder had other
children besides Richard the younger. We also know that the will of Richard
the elder was written 21 Feb 1744/5 and that no son by the name of John was
included therein. Hence, it seems very clear that for John to be a son of
Richard the elder, he most assuredly was born after 1692 (and probably
after 1693) and would have been deceased before Feb 1744/5.
Also, the grandchildren listed by Richard in his will do not include a
Joseph nor a Nathaniel and only one Richard Burt, a son of Josias. I just
tend to believe that Richard the elder would not have omitted a living
grandchild from his will, particularly not one named Richard.
QUESTIONS:
1. Do we have any clear indication as to when John Burt who removed from
Gloucester County to NC might have died? If he died after Feb 1744/5, we
would have further strong evidence that he was NOT the son of Richard the
elder.
2. Discounting the difficulties about all of this possible relationship
that I mentioned above, does this possibility seem any where near being
feasible?
Now the last area.
Richard the elder had a son named William. This is the one that I am fairly
certain died in Greensville County, VA in 1782/4. This William had a son
named Harwood. I have further evidence that this Harwood Burt remained in
York County and died there in, as I can best recollect right now, in the
1790s. There were also some other descendants named harwood as well.
In the write-up as posted on the web page, we have this about Grace, the
wife of John of Gloucester County:
"Maiden name of Grace unknown at this time. The register of Abingdon
Parish, Gloucester Co., VA, where the births of many of John and Grace's
children were
recorded, lists the baptism on 8 October 1699 of Grace Hayward [Howard?], the
daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Hayward [Howard?]. While this is the right
time frame for her birth, we have no more information on Grace Hayward."
Two questions:
Could Grace's maiden name have possibly been Harwood?
Could also William have married a Harwood lady, hence naming his son with
that name? Or is Harwood a corruption of the name Hayward or Howard, and so
maybe William might have married some one related to Grace?
Just some more musings for us to "chew over."
Personally, I am NOT a proponent that John was the son of Richard the elder
but I did find it in print and wanted to share.

The first deed is of particular interest in that it gives the name of
the daughter named in his will as the wife of Osmond J. Neville. I had
thought that perhaps she was named Maria, based on the 1809 will of
Mary Davis, widow of Goodrum Davis, which named her nephew William L.
Burt son of William Burt, niece Maria Burt daughter of William Burt and
niece Martha Burt daughter of William Burt. Looks like she wasn't
talking about William Burt Sr. (his son was William C. Burt, not William
L. Burt, anyway). [Has anyone *proof* that William Burt, son of Joseph
Burt Sr., married Martha Elizabeth Davis?]

we've yet found.
(By way of warning, however, Stephen Bradley states that the handwriting
of the court minutes was very difficult to decipher, and when I copied
down the Burt entries in the index to deeds on microfilm I didn't find
Marshall Burt listed. But I could have made a mistake. I did look
through the indexes of Bradley's abstracts looking for Marshall
Butt/Butts/Bird/Hurt/etc. and didn't see one, so the above name may be
correct. It would be good to look at the actual deed and minutes.)

[1634 - 1642 Charles River County; 1634 name changed to York County; 1651-
York Co. divided, land north of York River was designated as Gloucester Co.
On May 18, I attended the morning Episcopal service at the Abingdon
Church, Gloucester County, VA. I was very glad to observe how well these
many generations/ members have maintained this beautiful brick church, which
was rebuilt in 1755. I plan to return to their church office to review any
available records and grave plat/ registers which may be on file there.

Found your name on the Roots surname index and deceided to take a chance...
Am researching the BURT family in similar geographical and time frame as
list.
Specifically:
William BURT, residing at one time in Edgecomb County, NC, Wake County, NC
and later Franklin Co., TN, where he died around 1848 (I have copy of will)
Also, his wife, a Susan BURT (maiden name not given), from Granville Co., NC.
There are a number of other Burts listed in the marriage records of Wake Co.,
NC. A son, William Henry Burt m. Mary W. Adams 8 Jan. 1852.
