Subj: Burts in Halifax Co., Deeds
All -
Here are some deeds that I abstracted last winter involving Burts in
Halifax County, NC. I've been meaning to go through them and haven't had
time, so I'll pass them along as they may help piece together some
relationships or help identify the various William Burts, etc. I only got
through Book 27 before I got busy with other responsibilities and haven't
been able to get back to it.
If you see anything that looks obviously like a mistake, it probably is.
Let me know and I'll double-check my photocopy.

Joseph Burt Sr's (prob oldest) daughter Sally Burt married Taylor
Fluellen but was deceased by the time of the above deed. Taylor
Fluellen, Eaton Fluellen and Fanny Fluellen m John Gibson were her
children. (I can't remember what proof we have for Fanny's relationship
other than the implications of the deed above so someone else can jump
in here).
See http://www.tntech.edu/~beg/burt/sally_fluellen.html for the meager
details we have on her. Looks like found you've Fanny's will!

Can you give us more information on the sources of this (i.e. the text
of WB 3 p. 152 and p. 326)? If the John Burt who married Sarah Marshall
was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Burt, a birthdate of ca 1750 seems a
bit early compared to his other siblings. I'm not absolutely convinced
that John Burt who married Sarah Marshall was the John Burt who was the
son of Joseph Burt, nor that he was the man who died in Autauga County
in 1827. We still need better proof, since there was more than one John
Burt in Halifax County (i.e. son of Richard Burt, for one). (It indeed
appears that John Burt of Autauga was married more than once, since
Rebecca his daughter was much older than the other siblings, but whether
his first wife was Sarah Marshall isn't clear - to me at least).
What is the source of John Burt's death date? 24 Sep 1827 is the date
that Stephen M. Burt was appointed administrator of his estate. Would
folks rush to the courthouse that fast?!
Sorry to nitpick. If we don't do it now, we'll regret it sooner or
later! Thanks for the new information!

Ina didn't mention, although she probably knows, that William Marshall
Burt was born in Georgia. According to a history of Russell Co., AL,
another settler in Russell Co. was William Washington Burt, who was a
second cousin to William Marshall Burt's son.

Hi yall,
I am very interested in the Billingsley family that Barbara asked about
last week. I have run into several ties to it with the Burt/Hunt family and
also with a friends Owens/Booth family. Attached are my Billingsley files,
based on information received from Robert Coleman, Kenneth Merkel, and
census records. I hope it is helpful. Please let me know of any additions
or corrections. I know my date of death on Cynthia Turner is probably wrong
based on last weeks discussion. What do yall think? Was it Rebecca buried
in the Gaines Cemetery? I plan to do a little research on them this weekend
if possible. Your imput will be appreciated.
Regards,
John

Subj: Billingsley File Update
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Hi everyone,
I visited the Autauga Heritage Museum today and found much new Billingsley
info. I have attached my updated files for you to check out.
In "The Billingsley Family in America" by Davis the Catherine Billingsley
who married Stephen Burt is not listed among the children. He does list
three children that I had not seen listed before, i.e.-- James Reeves b.
1798 [same DOB as Catherine???], Nancy b. 180__, died young; and Cynthia b.
1805 m ___ Woodson. None of the children that I list under Rebecca Barker
are included except Bowles. I am not including the above 3 children until I
can compare notes with you guys.
I am also researching a friends Owens family which is connected with the
Booths. In Autauga Marriage records Catherine Billingsley m John Booth 19
Jun 1851. Do any of you know how or if she ties to Clement's line? There
must be some connection between the Billingsley and Booths, note William
BOOTH Billingsley. Any ideas?
Kenneth, you were correct. Nancy A., wife of Wm. Booth Billingsley, married
William Holloman after the death of her first husband. I have not found her
maiden name.
Barbara, the surname cross reference is great. I found Billingsley info in
files I never would have looked in otherwise. Will snail mail you a copy
soon. I don't know how to download it.
Regards,
John

Chadwell, his brother-in-law, and moved to Autauga County, AL where he
engaged in farming. The town of Billingsley in northeast Autauga County is
named for Clement Billingsley.

Subj: RE: Burt help needed!!!!!
Barbara,
Hi! I appreciate your added note on William Washington Burt. But know what?
I didn't know that he was any way related for sure. Do you have how he is a
second cousin?
Does this tell you how little information we really do have on my Burt line?
By the way, we lost my Great Grandaunt: Bertha Georgia Owens Burt, the first
part of April. She was born 10-7-1906 and was postmistress of Pittsview, AL
for @40 years.
By the way, I have a copy of the History of Russell Co., book that you
mentioned in it, if anyone needs anything looked up, I'll be glad to help!!
Thanks!!

Subj: James Burt - Web Page
Folks,
I am still working on the Burt web pages, just have been too busy with
other things to make much progress. I have now completed a Web page for
James Burt (son of Joseph Burt Sr.):
http://www.tntech.edu/~beg/burt/james.html
Please take a look and let me know if you have additions or corrections.
Several questions arise for me, particularly the identity of his wife
Mary named in his will. Warren County, GA records give James Burt m
Rebecca Burt in 1803; Halifax County, NC deeds verify that Rebecca Burt,
daughter of William Burt Sr., was indeed his wife. As you'll see from
the Web page, Rebecca apparently did *not* die about 1805, but was alive
until at least 1824 and living in Putnam County, GA.
Some messages that have come through have indicated Mary B. Marshall as
either the first or second wife of James Burt, but the dates that have
been given do not jive with the above information. Anyone willing to
take a stab at clearing this up?
The 1820 census for James Burt, which lists a female over 45 in his
household, has got me to wondering if Elizabeth [Walton?] Burt may have
made her way to Putnam County before her death. I know she was alive in
1812 (but perhaps not living in Halifax Co.) and there is a Georgia land
lottery record for an Elizabeth Burt in Warren County, GA (I think ca
1805, I can't remember the date right now). We also know that some of
the youngest sons, while still minors, went to Warren Co., GA. Any ideas
to confirm or rule out her coming to Georgia?
By the way, does anyone have the 1830 census information for Putnam
County, Georgia?

Subj: William Burt - C. W. Wallace
Hello Barbara and John
I received a letter today from C. W. Wallace, Chuck, of San Diego, CA. I
had sent you some information on him earlier.
He included some family information of a William Burt who married a Susan
Sims. From his letter and previous correspondence, I think he is mailing
each of you similar information.
His information is that William Burt who married Susan Sims is, in turn,
the son of a William Burt born in Mecklenburg Co., VA in 1754.
This is somewhat intriguing to me, but it does not all "add up" correctly.
Let me go back and establish the reasons. "My" Mathew Burt was in
Mecklenburg County, VA buying land in 1766 and 1770. Mathew had an uncle
William Burt who died in Greensville Co., VA about 1783. This Wm who died
had a son named William who was an executor of the estate.
Question: Could not this William the executor also be the one who was the
father of William who married Susan Sims?
There is one specific "fly in the ointment" however. Chuck Wallace has it
that William of Wm and Susan was born in Warren county, NC in 1781. However
that is not all bad because his father, if in fact it was Wm the executor,
could have gone off to NC, been there in 1781 and returned to Greensville
County, VA some time before the death of his father in 1783. (This death
was in either 1783 or 1784, based on the will and the probate thereof, so
is fairly firm.) I have no idea where William the executor went after he
left Greensville Co. But, with Greensville on the south border of Virginia
and Warren County not far away on the north border of NC, these two
different county locations do not seem an insurmountable problem to me.
Another question: Do either of you have another William Burt that could tie
in better than this? Or, perhaps even proven beyond any doubt?
I hope my attempts at keeping this possible line of three different William
Burt fellows is successful and not too confusing.
The oldest of these William Burt to whom I have alluded is the youngest son
of Richard the elder.
I will send this to the rest of the list as well, and not repeat to you two.
I thank you for your help in all of this.
And, Barbara, I thank you so very much for your work on the web sites. I
have not looked yet at your newest one but will do so shortly, i.e., this
afternoon!!
Bill

Hi Barbara,
Still having trouble with my address book. If you feel this is worthy
please pass it on.
In regards to a poss second marriage for James Burt that married Rebecca
Burt in 1803.
Marriage record: Putnam Co GA - James Burt & Polly Rogers 6 Sep 1825.
"Polly" is as you know nickname for Mary.

I had seen that marriage earlier and had thought it could not be the
right James Burt since James' son Joseph Tarpley Burt b 1812 was
supposedly the son of James and *Mary* and this birth would have been
too early. However, since I recently learned that Rebecca Burt was alive
until at least 1824 (at least according to the power of attorney
document), it sounds like Joseph Tarpley Burt couldn't have been a son
of Mary. So Polly Rogers is again a possible candidate for James Burt's
(d 1836) wife.

Lisa,
Thanks so much for your help. I just received some other information
concerning a William and John Burt in virginia and NC. I need to sit down
and try to sort out some of these folks... That'll give me something to do
this weekend . I just know that all these Burts are related. I am also
passing this along to Barbara.

Everyone,
The other day, Barbara sent an e-mail about a possible TARPLEY connection
with the BURT family. Then, I received an e-mail from Lea Dowd that shows a
possible TARPLEY - HOLT connection. In my database, I have TURNER - HOLT,
TURNER - MARSHALL and, of course, MARSHALL - BURT connections. Since it's
often helpful to look at allied families, I'm sending along the information
below. It doesn't show any definite TARPLEY connection, but it might provide
some clues. If anyone has any possible ties to these families, please share
them with the group and, perhaps, we can find more links. Thanks.

Subj: Tarpley Holt & Mathews Family.
Hi Everyone,
Just received a wonderful package of informaion from Sandi Heath. (Sandi is
researching the Mathews and Burt families). Her package included a copy of
an article that appeared in a Macon, Georgia newspaper Dec. 1914, "The Old
Holton Neighborhood" by James Calloway. It apparently ran in 2-3
installments and concerned the history of the Holton community in Bibb Co.,
GA near Macon. The concerned the related families of Mathews, Flewellyn and
Holt.
One of the first settlers of this community was Timothy Mathews, son of
James and Ann Mathews, who married Martha Flewellyn. She was the daughter
of Abner and Ann (Lane) Flewellyn. They were soon joined by her sisters
Nancy, Eliza, and Margaret, and their husbands. Eliza Flewellyn married
Tarpley Holt. Tarpley Holt's father was Simon, who had 8 sons and one
daughter.
Also, found in Sandi's information were several references to the WALTON
family and their connection to the Mathews. No specific information was
given. But the following was found in a 23 June 1932 letter from Carrie W.
Mathews of Gulfport, MS to Mrs. W. L. Dunn of Prattville, AL (my fair
city): "...I, also, have quite a bit of information about the WALTONS who
are closely related to the Mathews family, the names Timothy Walton and
Elizabeth Walton occuring frequently. If you care for this I will be
Pleased to copy and send..." I have e-mailed Sandi to see if she has this
Walton history. This could either support or kill my belief that Joseph
Burt's wife was a Walton. You might recall that the frequent use of the
Walton name in Mary "Polly" Burt Mathews family was part of my supporting
evidence.
Regards,
John

Hi Everyone,
Barbara, regarding your information on James Burt I have the following
observations:
1. I will have to look up my source, but I had this on Maria Burt
Margaret Maria Burt, b. 28 Dec 1805 Warren Co., GA
d. 30 Jul 1830 Harris Co., GA
married Hiram Read, b. 16 Apr 1801
d. 29 Jul 1882
2. James Tarpley Burt was buried Warrior Stand Cemetery, Macon Co., AL
Note that Warrior Stand was a stop along the old Federal Road through early
Alabama.
3. I list William Y. Burt. Again, I will have to check my sources, but I
believe that is from Will. Can anyone confirm this?
4. I too had James G. Burt, son of James and Rebecca, marrying Lucy Pace,
however in Lea Dowd's last e-mail was the following:
NC/SC Bible Records
WILLIAM PACE BIBLE
Owner: Mrs. B. E. Bell , Atlanta, Georgia
MARRIAGES
Lucy Pace, our dau. 11/6/1828 to James Burt. age 22 yrs., 28 days
Elkana Pace, our son, 10/29/1835 to Nancy Burt, age 20 yrs., 9 sos., 27
days
I known that Elkanah Pace married Nancy Hurt Burt, daughter of Jesse Burt.
That is from DAR application by one of their descendents on Joseph Burt,
Rev. Patriot. This would imply that Lucy married James G. Burt, son of
Jesse, rather than son of James. What do yall think? The ages listed above
are for the Paces not the Burts unfortunatly.
5. Your suggestion that JC Burt listed in 1850 Macon Co. census with Hiram
Read was Josiah C. Burt, Hiram's brother-in-law makes sense. I had always
assumed that it was my g-grandfather James Creth Burt, who was also born
1809. I thought it odd that he appeared in both the Talladega Co. and Macon
Co. censuses. Thanks for clearing that up!
Hope this helps. You are doing a great job on the Burt webpages.

John, these dates are very consistent with what we already know about
Maria and Hiram. Could you please find your source? I'll then add that
info to the web page.

Both you and Lea (if I'm not mistaken) give his name as *James* Tarpley
Burt. My sources have him as *Joseph* Tarpley Burt (sources being an LDS
ancestral file and a biography of James Marshall Burt, his son, in
Owen's Dictionary of Alabama Biography; the LDS record might be based
on the account in Owens as well). What is your source for James as his
first name?
>

I found a book of Putnam County will abstracts (can't find the author
now) which is my source for the children of James Burt - it tenatively
assigns a middle inital of Y for William if I remember correctly. This
is a case where a careful examination of Putnam County records would
probably be very fruitful. I have intended to order some of these
records on microfilm from the local LDS library but have been too busy.
Perhaps next time Sarah Sharpless (living in Georgia now?) visits the
Ga. Archives (!) she'll be able to research this more thoroughly.
(Say, perhaps we should schedule a Burt Ga. archives trip sometime for
those of us - John, Sarah, me, others? - who are in "reasonable" driving
distance of Atlanta - or pass by there on vacation - sometime! Anyone
interested?)

I agree that in light of the marriage of Elkanah Pace to Jesse's
daughter that is is very likely that the James G. Burt that married Lucy
Pace was Jesse's son, not James'. I will update the James Burt webpage
accordingly as well as the one on Jesse to be accessible shortly (at
http://www.tntech.edu/~beg/burt/jesse.html).

Yes, this is helpful. I'm sorry that I haven't been able to update these
pages faster.
Bill - I recieved the letter from C. W. Wallace and will respond. About
all that I will be able to share is the relevant deeds of William Burt
of Warren bordering Halifax Co., NC. I haven't had a chance to look over
the material closely enough to comment yet.

Correction - It was Bobbie who also had his name as *James* as per
above.

Hi Everyone,
I found something in the materials that Sandi sent me that I had overlooked
yesterday regarding the Mathews-Walton connection. There was a letter
dated, 24 Feb 1914, from Mrs. R. J. (Sarah Elizabeth Copeland) Massey of
Atlanta to a Mrs. Barrow. In it Mrs. Massey states that she is a Mathews
descendent and tells what she knows of the family history. What is
interesting here is a postscript that adds "I emitted to you that the
Mathews were related to George Walton, one of the signers of the
Declaration of Independence. You see James and Sarah Brinkley Mathews named
one of their daughters Walton". It's not much, but it gives us a possible
link. Walton Mathews, dau. of James and Sarah, was a younger(?) sister of
John Mathews who married Sally Burt. I have not found the name used earlier
than that. Could the Walton connection still be Elizabeth, wife of Joseph
Burt? Does anyone know anything about George Walton, signer of the
Declaration of Independence?
I am attaching the Mathews line from my database. If anyone needs further
information on this line please e-mail me.
Regards,
John
P.S.-- Barbara, I think the Georgia research trip a great idea. Our
genealogy society has a fieldtrip to the Ellen Payne Odom Library in
Moultrie, GA June 27-28. Everyone is welcome to come along or join us. I am
also interested in visiting the Georgia Archives.

According to A Rockaway in Talbot; Davidson; Daniel Grant Owen; Chandler
and Macon Co., AL 1860 Census his name was Joseph. As this is not my line,
I do not know. However, is Elisha Fletcher Hurt related to the Elisha Hurt
that dies abt 1829 in Warren Co., GA?
Thanks,
Lea

John asks:

He was a signer from Georgia. I gathered a few tidbits this evening on
the Web - he was allegedly born about 1749 near Farmville, VA and came
to Savannah (Richmond County) GA about 1803.
Farmville, VA is now in Prince Edward County, but I believe was part of
Amelia County until 1754 or so. (I have the dubious distinction of
having visited Farmville!).

I rechecked my database and I do have "Joseph" Tarpley Burt. The "James" in
my e-mail was my error. I quess I had James Burt on the brain.

Everyone,
From _A Rockaway in Talbot_ , Vol. 1, William H. Davidson:
Page 59:
"Social graces and grandeur of the Old South are conjured up in the life and
memory of Madame Octavia Celeste Valentine Walton LeVert (1811-1877), the
wife of Dr. He nry S. LeVert (1804-1864), of Mobile, Alabama, for whom the
college [LeVert Female College, Talbotton, GA] was named.
"Granddaughter of George Walton, a Georgia signer of the Declaration of
Independence...
"Madame LeVert's parents were George and Sally Minge Walker Walton, Jr. Her
grandmother, Mrs. Eliza Talbot Walker, wife of George Walker, was a sister of
Matthew Talbot, who died in 1827, and for whom Talbot County was named. She
died in 1842. Walton, Talbot and Walker familiew were prominent in Georgia
during the early years of the 1800s."
