I thought at first that this was William Washington Burt and Caroline
Mathews, but the children and dates don't match. The John Burt could be the
son of John and Hannah Burt however. His date of birth is right. They
could also be some of the South Carolina Burts. What do you think Barbara
and Billy?
Barbara, I found some more information on the Vincents. In "Marriage
Records of Montgomery County Alabama 1817-1850" compiled by Pauline Jones
Gandrud was the following: John Vincent married Martha Sharp 17 Nov 1846;
19 Nov by M.C. Stokes, JP Note: In 1850 he was 25 born NC; she was 21, born
Alabama). [I believe this is John H. Vincent, son of Jarrott Vincent and
Elizabeth Burt. His DOB matches.]

Hi every one.
My wife and I went to Ruston, LA and the LA Tech Library this past Monday
to search the Burt Manuscript collection that is located there. The
material is from the works of James Claude BURT who, as far as I can
determine, was the first real BURT researcher. So, if you are interested in
his work, that is a good place to go.
I found a few leads in the material but no significant breakthrough for my
Richard Burt the elder. But, John I will send you a little information that
I found concerning a John BURT back in early Virginia.
At the end of this message is a more complete description of the material
than is currently available on the gopher site.
Just as an interesting side light and coincidence. My paternal grandmother
was a Julia Hanna Burt, Leake Co., MS. She, and hence I, was (am) a
descendant of a Robert BURT who died in Edgefield Co., SC in the 1790s.
In looking at the phone directory for Ruston, I found a Julia Burt listed.
Called. She was interested to a degree but suggested that I call her
father, Robert Burt. She is a young, unmarried lady but new enough of her
name and its origins that she was named for a Julia from the Burt-Trussell
line. Robert is related to the James Claude Burt earlier mentioned.

Subj: Update On Richard BURT, Sr.
Hi, everyone. Thought I would give you an update on my progress of the Burt
line in York County, VA, the line from Richard Burt the elder who died
there in 1745.
I have proof of the first wife of Richard Burt, the elder. Also proof that
this marriage produced only one son. This son, Richard, Jr., died in 1719
with three daughters as heirs. They also were granddaughteres of Philip
Moody. See below.
I have only circumstantial evidence of the second wife and their children.
See more below.
In the will of Richard Sr., he names two sons, Josias and William, and all
of his grandchildren that, I guess, were living at the time he was writing
his will.
I have Richard Sr's will, the will of son Josias and the will of son William.
There was a Moody Burt that died intestate in York county, VA in 1735.
The will of Josias names two sons included in their grandfather's will as
well as two daughters that were not in the will of Richard Sr. The will of
William names one son and two daughters included in their grandfather's
will as well as one son and one daughter that were not named in the will of
Richard Sr. Hence I assume that these 4 "not named" grandchildren were born
after the writing of the will by Richard, Sr.
By elimination then, I have "assigned" those other "named" grandchildren
with the name of Burt to the third son, Moody, who, as mentioned, died
intestate in 1735 in York County, VA.
For the second wife of Richard Sr., I believe her to be Elizabeth Moody.
The will of Philiip Moody of 1719 names a daughter Elizabeth Burt. Richard
Sr., had a son whom he named Moody, as indicated above.
He also had a son named Josias. Philip Moody had a brother named Josias and
also named one of his own sons Josias. So, the "bent' to naming sons with
those two names lends some credence also to the marriage of Richard, Sr. to
a Moody lady. Further, I know of no other man named BURT living in York
county during that time frame.
Further searching for proof of the marriage of Richard Sr. to Elizabeth
Moody seems very unprofitable and almost useless.
This all leads to one little situation, I guess humorous. But a situation
that is uncommon. If the second wife of Richard Sr. was in fact Elizabeth
Moody, she would then be the older sister to the wife of Richard, Jr. His
wife was Catherine Moody, daughter of Philip Moody. Older sister becomes
mother-in-law? Oh, well, stranger things have happened.

An interesting little side light. I am sort of the "organizer" of a group
of us here that call ourselves the "Computer Genealogy Users Group." It is

Hey, y'all
I need some suggestions, please.
In my Richard Burt the elder research in York county, VA, I have found
wills of two of his three sons born to his second marriage.
(His first marriage was to Elizabeth Hansford and by her he had one son,
Richard the younger. I can support this with other records. And Richard the
younger had NO sons.)
The will of Richard the elder names six grandsons named BURT. Of these, I
can place three with their respective fathers based on recorded wills.
These fathers, sons of Richard the elder, are Josias and William.
Richard, Sr's son Moody died intestate. I must assume then that these other
three grandson are sons of Moody.
One of these sons of Moody is, you guessed it, a John BURT.
My question: Y'all got an extra John BURT that doesn't fit in your
families? A John that was born definitely before 1745, the date of death of
Richard, Sr., and, if then he was in fact the son of Moody, born before
1735, the date of death of Moody. In the will of Richard, Sr., this John is
the second listed grandson. In my "guesstimation," he was probably born ca
1720 but I could easily be off some 10 years or so, either way.
On the other hand, my Matthew Burt, probably just younger than the
aforesaid John, was in Mecklenburg County, VA buying land in the 1760s,
along with a John BURT. Apparently, neither had a wife at the time they
sold the land.
Now, a complication. My Matthew also had a son named John. I have been
assuming that the "Mecklenburg John" was the son of Mathew. But that is
certainly not necessarily so. However, if in fact "Mecklenburg John" was
the son of Mathew, where then did John the grandson of Richard the elder
go????
So, I repeat again: Y'all got an extra John Burt that doesn't seem to fit?
I have an "empty slot." The slot being 1) a grandson of Richard the elder,
probably the son of Moody and probably just older than my Mathew, OR 2) a
son of Mathew.
Any ideas, suggestions, whatever, welcomed.

Went on a research trip and roadside flower viewing today.
At the Laurens Co. Public Library, they have a Surname File with Burts but
the first form of the name is BURTZ.
Also found in book on Greenwood Co. with many Burts listed.

"In 1852 Armistead Burt of Abbeville retired after 10 years as
representative in Congress from this district," page 116
Richard Bullock had at least six children, #5 married [ ] Burt and #6
Lucinda Bullock married Billups Goode Burt
Samuel Goode, son of McKinness, dates his will June 23, 1800 and it was
recorded in Edgefield Feb. 10, 1801 had eight children with Ann or Anna
Freeman; #2
Frances Goode, born 1780, married Edward Burt with three children, Anne,
Adeline and Phillip Burt. Child # 3 Elizabeth (Betsy) Goode born 1783
married Phillip Burt and they had nine children: Rebecca Freeman, Billups
Goode, Coleman M., Sarah Ann L., Susan Miles, John Edward, Benjamin F.,
Elizabeth L. and Dr. James Lafayette Burt. "The home of "P. Burt" is on the
1817 Mills Atlas map, a short distance south of Cambridge." page 239
William Perrin, born about 1772 had 4 children, #3 Dr. George Gwyn Perrin
married Adeline Burt daughter of Phillip and Frances Goode Burt. "Dr.
Perrin and family lived in Alabama, and after his death, his widow and four

Edgefield.

In my earlier information about Richard Burt the elder, I included
information about his son William and the confusion of where his will was
recorded. This is all in Item 8 of the references.
I am convinced that the will of William, son of Richard the elder, is
recorded in Greensville County, VA, same will book, pages etc., as included
in the Mathis book. Just that the state is different and the county name is
spelled wrong. ?? The will of William includes a son William (as included
in the will of Richard the elder) and also daughters Mary and Elizabeth
(again, included in Richard Sr's will). True, one more son and one more
daughter were included in William's will, but that does not seem a problem
to me.
So, I will be sending 1) a correction for that item 8 and also 2) the will,
to be recorded at a different link. Question: When should I send it? I am
asking only in that I do not want this to overload and pressure you. You
already have a "full plate" with the job, a family and a household. You
have been of such great help already, and all of us are deeply appreciative.
Lastly, in my info I sent for the postings, I included Josias Burt as the
oldest son of Richard the elder. I have listed in my personal genealogy
program files that Moody was the oldest and that Josias was second oldest.
Perhaps convoluted thinking but, Moody died first. Also grandson John Burt
is first listed of the grandsons (admittedly after grandson Richard) after
the daughters of Richard Jr., were listed and I can only conclude that John
was the son of Moody. Further, the information that J. C. Burt in his
manuscripts also lists Moody as the oldest son.
Question: Is this enough justification to suggest that we change the
sequence, and estimated birth dates, of the two? If so and with your
approval, I will send the adjusting entries. :-) I started to say
"correcting" entries. I don't really know that it is correct so it sure
can't be a correcting entry. :-)
Hope all is well with you and your family. Yesterday the low temp was 44,
high was 84. The morning broke bright and clear, with just a few scattered
high clouds. Hopefully, the fellow will get to till my garden today. I need
to get my "maters" (tomatoes) in the ground.

I can't answer your question but can offer a couple of resources. One is
the Smith book, or its complete title: "Family Tree Book, Genealogical and
Biographical, Listing the relatives of General William Alexander Smith and
of W. Thomas Smith. Compiled by them and published by them in 1922." This
book has information on Samuel Williams and Elizabeth Alston, but not the
dates you are seeking.

ancestors in America started with William Williams. We also show that
he was born in England in about 1656. We show his wife as Mary unk.
They married and emigrated from England to Virginia about 1678. They
had a son in 1680 who they named Samuel. The following is the story my
cousin sent me on William Williams.
William Williams was the younger son of a wealthy Englishman. His older
brother was his father's heir, and as so often happened in families at
the time, the youngest son, who could not inherit his father's estate,
was urged to pursue a career in the Church. William was educated for
the Ministry, and the English Anglican Church sent him to Virginia to
minister to the colonista. He brought his new wife to the Shenandoah
River Valley in northern Virginia and established his church. He
eventually became disillusioned with the Church, or with his lack of
success. He purchased land and slaves, developed a large plantation to
grow tobacco, and became wealthy. He again becames disillusioned and
remorseful in his old age. He recanted and freed all his slaves. He
lost all his property and improvished himself and his family.
I show their son Samuel Williams was born 9 December 1680 in Shenandoah
Virginia. He left VA as a young man and moved south into Edgecombe
County NC where he married Elizabeth Alston in 1699. Their son Samuel
Williams Jr. was born there in 1708. Samuel Williams Sr. died there on
21 October 1753 in Edgecombe County NC.

I've been so busy later that I don't know if I'm coming or going so please

The Mathews connect with the families of Joseph and Elizabeth, and son
Joseph Burt, Jr. and Ann Read. It is particulaly interesting since it gives
dates of birth for Mary "Polly" Burt and children. She said her sources
were her grandmother's research and the book "Luke Mathews of Brunswich
Co., VA". ...I am running into more and more connections to Brunswick Co.,

Tentative conclusions, some more postitive than tentative :-)
John Burt married Sarah.
They had two children, one a son named John.
John Senior died in 1674.
His widow Sarah married Thomas Hindmasse before 25 Jul 1677.
Thomas Hindmasse died before 25 Jul 1677.
Widow Sarah married Rand. Kirke before 26 Sept 1677.
John Burt Junior married Susanna before 23 Feb 1698/9 but also died before
that date.
All of this is being collected to try to establish some family groupings
earlier than those that we now have of John Burt of Gloucester County and
of Richard Burt the elder of York County. Another message, but not of such
length and detail, pertains to a Richard Burt also of Westmoreland Co and
will be along shortly.

Richard Burt
Here is the result of that portion of my research that pertained to Richar
Burt of Westmoreland Co., VA, presented in a time sequence of events.

of tobacco either in goods or cattle.

Rich: Burt appoynts Mr. Clemt: Spilman is atorney.
27 Feb 1677/8
Rich. Burt vs. Robt. Whitroe[?]. Idem ut supra.
The only conclusion I have is that I need to do more work on this. There is
obviously another Richard Burt, different from my Richard Burt the elder of
York Co. Is this perhaps the one who owned land in Charles River County in
1642 and 1649? Where was he living? In Westmoreland Co? Where did he die?
Who were his off-spring?

Hi everybody,
I believe my family information has been posted before but I thought I
would post it again. My ggg grandfather was Elijah BURT. He was born on
10 March 1808 in Georgia. I believe that he moved with his parents to
Tennessee in the 1810s. His father may have been a John BURT. I believe
this because the only BURT listed in the 1820 Franklin Co., TN census
was a John BURT. In the 1830 census a Ryal BURT was listed in Franklin
Co., TN. Elijah's oldest son was named Ryal born in 1830. I believe he
had at least three brothers named William, Elisha and Groves. He married
a Elizabeth (SATTERFIELD?) in about 1829 in I believe Franklin Co., TN.
She was born on 15 June 1812 in North Carolina. They had at least 12
children.

I am VERY pleased to be part of the BURT group, especially since I need a
lot of help, as the only BURT I show is Sadie who was married to Benjamin
Leroy Hamilton b)1856 Jacksonville, ILL. d) 1909 Kirksville, MO. They had 5
children: Burt b) 1889; Rennie d) abt. 12 yrs. old; Paul b) 1893; Leroy
Benjamin b) 1896; and my grandmother Odette Hamilton b) 1905 d) 1983 in OH.
All 5 were born in Kirksville, MO. I have little info. on Sadie ex. b) 1866
d) 1949 in Detroit, MI buried in Grandlawn Cem. As the rumor goes, she was on
a ferry that capsized and her parents(WHITTAKER or KENNEDY) were drown. She
was then adopted by the BURT family. Does this ring a bell with anyone?? Any

It is a very welcome surprise to hear from you. I hope that this msg. also

I will be glad to follow up on your research leads of Pittssylvania County,
VA. I have previously researched some of the Halifax County records for my
wife, Bette. I have researched her lines of NATHAN WILLIAMS and his first
wife, LUCY ECHOLS. Lucy's parents were John Echols and Lucy Annah MOORE, who
were married 9 September, 1760, Lunenburg County, VA. Their marrage bond is
on file within the county records.
John Echols and Lucy Annah Moore lived c1760 to c1786+, near Halifax, Halifax
County, VA. Some time during c1786+ to c1796+ John moved his family to ? and
later to Georgia, perhaps directly to Wilkes County. I have not confirmed
these movements.
Your reference to Nathan Williams witnessing a deed on 1 January 1803, lends
support that John Echols and Nathan Williams were in the same county during
that period. Nathan Williams may have married LUCY ECHOLS there between
c1796+ and c1803+. Have you reviewed the Wilkes or surrounding Counties for
the Marriage Bond for their marriage?
Back to the Virginia project: Lunnenburg, Halifax and Pittsylvania counties
are joining. I have seen deeds for Williams and Echols members in each of
these counties. I have not noted any JAMES M. WILLIAMS, but will check to see
if the name is listed within any indexes for these counties. Your
discovery may be the golden key to our Williams advancement within Virginia.
I had researched some of the numerous Williams families (1770 - 1790+) listed
within Halifax, Northampton, Hertford and Edgecome Counties, North Carolina.
I did not locate any 'Nathan' members, or deeds in those counties. I do not
state that the name was not listed. I may have overlooked those entries. I
have been researching within the records of these NC counties for our Thomas
Coleman/ Martha and his father-in-law,Joseph Burt. Both families owned and
deeded land in 1824 and moved together directly to Autauga County, AL.
Of course, there are numerous Coleman and Burt lines who lived here in VA
during the 1750 -1790 period.
I have been involved with other Coleman lines recently: Clan Stewart, Burt,
Billingsley, Nelson, Clan Grant (McElroy) and especially our Hollingsworth
Society, as the presiding President and Editor, 'HOLLINGSWORTH HERITAGE'
Quarterly.

I haven't been posting lately, but I am still interested... My two cents:
Due to the mobility of the early families, I personally think that it would
be an error to limit the Burt list to only southern Burt's. Too many
times, I have seen Virginia and NC people showing up either in New England
or the West Indies as they were mariners by trade.
I am still very curious as to the Burt grave that I found in St. Kitt's
West Indies. I will have to look it up again, but it was either a Matthew
or a William as I recall. I will also try to forward the picture to you
for viewing.

I'm curious about your date of 1824. My indications are that it was a
couple of years earlier:
1) The Burt/Coleman family history written by Martha Matthews states
that Joseph Burt (along with John Coleman and Henry Hunt) came to
Autauga County in January 1822.
2) Halifax County, NC deeds (Book 25, p. 587) record that on [14?] March
1821 Joseph Burt and Thomas Coleman sold to Benjamin Johnston, all of
Halifax Co., NC 205 acres in Halifax Co. on Schoolhouse Branch and
Honeysuckle Branch. (Recorded Feb Session 1823).
3) My investigation of Halifax County deed records is far from complete,
but the Grantors Index to Deeds does not list a subsequent transaction
from Joseph Burt.
My belief, unless there is evidence to the contrary, is that the arrival
in 1822 is probably correct. Do you have a deed record from 1824?
(Joseph was definitely living in Autauga County by October of 1824: he
is listed as owing money to the estate of Mily Wakeman there).
I'm not sure what to make of the name Joseph J. Burt appearing in the
1813 Putnam County, GA tax list. Whether he lived there briefly, just
owned land there, or this was a different man I don't know. However, we
can place him in Halifax County, NC in 1812:
Halifax Co. NC deed book 22, p. 203, 30 June 1812
Joseph Burt to Jesse Peebles, both of Halifax Co., for 250 dollars, land
in Halifax Co. containing 150 acres bounded by Green Branch, west to
Burt's line, head of Harris Branch, Burt's or Coleman's line, Pigpen
branch. Signed: Joseph Burt Nov. Ct. 1812. This was not all of his land,
as he had inherited 200 acres from his father in 1788.
I'd be curious if anyone can shed some light on Joseph J. Burt in the
Putnam County tax list.

I think I sent this to John before, but I'm not sure. My father started
researching our families in the early 1960s. In March 1963, he received a
letter from Aunt Mollie McEwen Nixon of Rockford, Alabama. Aunt Mollie was
the granddaughter of Mary Ann BURT, dau of Stephen R. BURT and Catherine
(BILLINGSLEY) BURT. In this letter, Aunt Mollie recalled the following:
""Stephen Burt, born in Halifax, NC, so were his brothers James and Martin,
their mother Ann Reid, Hallifax, NC. James Burt moved to Martinsville near
Talladega and Martin moved to Prattville, had some kind of machinery, then
did well. My grandmother visited them - I know some of them, cousin John
Bateman who practiced law in Wetumpka, his mother named Mary Bateman came
here a lot - Stephen Burt entered land near Autaugaville - SE
1/4-NE-Sec-8-T-19R-14 East-S-1- (Stephen??? Medaian???) - Oct 26 1835
Certificate No. 24763 - afterwards moved to Weogufka - you know the house -
and the children"". Also in the letter, Aunt Mollie listed the wife of
Stephen Burt as "Kitty Billingsley, Kitty Billingsley mother a Miss Barker
was born in Orange Court House, Va., you know their children's names - James
Burt moved to Martinsville..." This is the only sourse we have to Rebecca's
surname. Do you know of any BARKERs in Autauga Co? My father thinks that
Cynthia Turner was his first wife, and Rebecca Barker was his second wife.
The marker located in the Gaines Cemetery was placed there in 1953 by L.L.
McNees of Lexington, Mississippi, a decendant by way of Rebecca Billingsley
Kirk (dau of Clement Billingsley). It has an obvious error, listing the
death year of Clement Billingsley as 1944, when it was actually 1941. My
father corresponded with Mr. McNees in the early 1960s, and as my father
described him, "Mr. McNees was absolutely convinced that the marker was
correct, as well as the fact that Clements wife was Cynthia Turner". Since
the information on the marker is not accurate, I wonder if the location of
the marker is accurate. How did Mr. McNees determine that Clement
Billingsley was buried at that spot in the Gaines Cemetery? How come no
other Billingsleys are buried in the Gaines Cemetery? If Clement
Billingsley was married twice, which wife was buried with him? Where is the
other wife buried? I think that the Gaines Cemetery got its name from the
owner of the farm where it is located, owned by Grady Gaines, a decendant of
Clement Billingsley. I think that Grady Gaines decended from Catherine
Billingsley and her second husband William H. Gaines. Catherine was the
fifth child of William and Nancy Billingsley, whose oldest brother was C.C.
Billingsley.
C.C. Billingsley was the oldest son of William Billingsley, born abt 1789 in
Stafford Co, VA and Nancy (Hollowell?-not sure if this is a maiden name or
the name of a second husband). Rev. Christopher Columbus Billingsley was
born 25 Dec 1816 in Stafford Co, VA and married Nancy ? in 1842.

Thank you for the Burt deed data, Halifax County, N. C. I am reviewing your
references of 1821 deeds for Joseph Burt and Thomas Coleman. I will reply
when and if I locate documented data, or other deeds of 1821 - 1824.
One of my long disappointing research (by mail) to Putnam County, GA was an
effort to confirm that JOSEPH J. BURT was our JOSEPH BURT from Halifax
County, N.C. My theory was that Joseph and family were migrating along the
customary route--SC, GA, to AL and westward. It has been recorded also that
Joseph J. Burt, Allen W. Coleman, Wm. Walker, Sen., Joel Hurt and E. Reid
were still living in Putnam County during 1819. After I discovered that our
Joseph Burt and Thomas Coleman came from Halifax County, N.C., I did not
follow up with the Putnam County, GA. records. Did anyone determine that
Joseph J. Burt was related or a son of our Joseph Burt??
Has anyone established any other given names for Joseph Burt?
Has anyone researched Joseph II's wife, Ann Read (Reed)(Reid), lines? Joseph
I's wife, Elizabeth Walton (?) lines? Would like to exchange with those who
have documented either or both of these ladies/ lines..Their data may provide

Franklin County, Tennessee Historical Review of January 1976
records that, "In the 1830's, William Burt of North Carolina came
to Franklin County to obtain his grant No. 8888 of 103 acres,
which was given to him for services in the Revolutionary War. He
then purchased the George Gray grants No. 595 and No. 2458 of 50
acres and 4 1/2 acres. Besides these grants, he purchased the
Andrew C. Woods grant No. 1958 of 75 acres, the Joseph Barr grant
No., 1043 of 60 acres, the Benjamin Weeks grant No. 2439 of 10
acres, and the William Anderson grant No. _ of 40 acres. As a
total, the grants made up a tract of land consisting of
approximately 342 1/2 acres.
In the year 1838, William Burt constructed a hotel on the
property near the sulphur springs. A partnership in the property
was then formed among Mr. Burt, Dr. L. P. Sims, and Joseph Sims.
Mr. Burt occupied the hotel until his death.
After William Burt's death, his daughter, Mrs. Martha Sims, Dr.
Powell Sims, her husband, and Thomas Short occupied the hotel.
