Hello again, all three of you

Now that I sort of have you people "pigeon-holed", I decided to share with
you my current research efforts.

As all will recall, I am descended from a Mat(t)hew Burt of York Co., VA, to
Charlotte Co., VA to Edgefield Co., SC where he died in, what?, 1794.

Now, my source that I used to establish the above was the book by Robert
Mathis "Mathew Burt of Virginia and Deep South" along with a VERY, VERY
important lead that Barbara gave me to establish a positive link between
Garland Burt and Garland Watkins Burt.

However, because of some errors and lack of references to documents in the
referenced book, I have taken nothing from that book without verification.
An example is this. He states that Richard Burt, Jr., born ca 1685, married
Elizabeth Hansford ca 1699. He also states that Elizabeth Hansford was the
daughter of Thomas Hansford. He further states that "This Richard Burt, Jr.
is the one named in the Will of Thomas Hansford and he is appointed to
assist in the settling of the Estate." It just so happens that Thomas
Hansford was summarily executed in 1676/77 for his participation in Bacon's
Rebellion, some 8 or 9 years before the possible date of the birth of
Richard, Jr. Oh, well, get off of this, Adams!!

The film, at the local LDS FHC, that I am looking at now include copies of
note cards made by one Thelma Ironmonger Hansford. Her notes are well
referenced. From these notes, I have ordered some film, 13 reels last
Thursday, and will undoubtedly order more at a later time. I believe I have
a copy of all of her notes that pertained to the Burt people in that area
that are in this first reel. Tomorrow, Tuesday, I will go and check her
notes on the Hansford line, to see what that might bring to light.

In addition to this, I am trying to develop a time line chart to put a bunch
of this stuff in a better time perspective. For instance, John, that is what
brought that Richard Burt to my specific attention back in 1642 and 1649 in
Charles River County, in an area that was later to become a part of
Gloucester County.

Incidentally, there was an Anthony Burt apparently in Elizabeth Cittie (sic_
in 1622. a William Burt on Hogg Island in 1623, a William Burtt in Virginia
Colony in 1624 and a Jane Burtt in James City County in 1624.

I have on order, within that batch of 13 reels, two more reels that include
notes, etc., of Thelma I. Hansford. I will gladly look up any names that you
might desire within her notes. The other reels are copies of deeds, etc. One
specific thing I am going to try to do is to see if I can trace that land
that Richard Burt owned in what is now Gloucester County in an attempt to
find any off-spring.

Again, I will be glad for any comments, requests, etc., that any of you may
have.

Kind regards to all.

And Sarah, I have seen your message about WIPO (Is that the right name?)
thank you for those references.

Bill Adams

Hi everyone,

In going back through my files I found a copy of a document that someone
sent me a few years ago. I believe it is from Halifax, NC DB 23:288. It is a
land sale dated 1 May 1812 between "the widow Eliz. Burt and the devisees of
Joseph Burt, decs. of the one part and Thos. Coleman of the County of
Halifax and the State of North Carolina on the other part." The devisees of
Joseph Burt are given as "the widow, John Burt, Exc.; William Burt; Stephen
Marshall & Eliz. his wife; Jesse Burt; Zacheus Burt; John Mathews and Nancy
his wife; James Burt; Richard Burt; Eaton Fluellen; Taylor Fluellen; John
Gibson & Fauncy(?) his wife." Thomas Coleman purchased the land from the
above. Could this be when the Burts left for Georgia?

The two parts or parcels of land were described as: "being in the county and
state aforesaid on the west side of Rocky Branch beginning at the foot of
Rocky Swamp Bridge thence up Hills road to Hynes Branch thence up the
various courses of said run of said Branch to a corner post, then along
Joseph Burt, Jun.'s line to the Pigpen branch thence up this branch to the
head, thence along said Burt's line to Greens Branch, thence down said
branch to Vinson's line then along his line to the run of Rocky Swamp thence
down the various courses of the run of said Swamp to the beginning which the
said Joseph Burt, decs. divised to the above mentioned widow and divisees in
and by his last Will and Testament..."

This document was signed by: Eliz. Burt [the widow], Zacheus Burt, Jas.
Burt, Richard Burt, Steph. Marshall, Eiz. Marshall, John Burt, Eaton
Fluellen, John Gibson, Fanny(?) Gibson, John Mathews, Mary Mathews, Taylor
Fluellen, Wm. Burt, and Jesse Burt. It was witnessed by: (?) Hightower,
Oren D. Carstaphen, (?) Fluellen, Timothy Mathews, Nelson Hamel(?), and H.
Perkins.

I am interested in the names mentioned. Barbara, you asked before if we
could be sure that it was our Elizabeth Burt who married Stephen Marshall, I
believe this confirms that. The Vinson whose land is mentioned was probably
Phillip Vinson. One of his sons, Barrett or Jarrott, married a daughter of
Joseph Burt, Jr. Why was Joseph Burt, Jr. not mentioned? Why is John
Mathews wife listed as Nancy and signed Mary? We know she was Mary "Polly"
Burt. Who is Eaton Fluellen? If it is Salley Burt Fluellen, then why is she
not listed as "wife of Taylor Fluellen"? Who are John and Fanny(?) Gibson?
[Her name was very difficult to read in both the body of the document and
the signature.] I would appreciate any thoughts that you have on this.

Regards,
John

I know nothing of the research that you might have done on these families
and names. However, if I may be presumptuous, I would pose two questions
that _might_ help steer you in a direction for an answer.

First: Could Salley Burt, wife of Taylor Flewellen have been deceased at
the time of this deed, with Eaton as a son who needed to sign as an heir
through his mother to the estate of Joseph Burt.

Next, in regard Fanny or Fauncy Gibson, similarly, could she have been a
married daughter of Salley, with Salley deceased, and therefore a rightful
heir through her deceased mother to the estate of Joseph Burt?

Just possible questions that might lead to some further insights.

Regards to both

Hi everyone,

I have a little Flewellin (sp?) information.

A Taylor Fleweling is shown in Dist. 12, Halifax Co., NC, on 12 Feb 1786,

with 1 WM <16, 2 WM > 16, 3 WF, and 6 slaves.(R)16

The orphans of Taylor FlewEllen of Warren Co., GA, are shown as having
drawn one blank [no land] in the 1805 Georgia land lottery. (R)231 Others
with draws in the lottery (and the county they drew from) are:
FlewEllen, Abner 2 blanks, Warren Co., GA

Gibson, John 2 blanks, Wilkes Co., GA
Gibson, John (son of Silvanus)	1 blank, Wilkes Co., GA
Gibson, John Jr. 2 blanks, Warren Co., GA
Gibson, Jonathan 1 blank, Wilkes Co., GA

If anyone's not familiar with this lottery the persons entitled to draw
were:
1.	Free white male, bachelor, 21 years of age or over, one year residence in
Georgia, U. S. citizen. 1 draw.
2.	Free white male, marrie, with wife and/or child (legitimate child/children
under 21 years of age), one year residence in Georgia, U. S. citizen. 2
draws.
3.	Widow, with minor child (legitimate child/children under 21 years of age),
one year residence in Georgia. 2 draws.
4.	Minor orphan or family of minor orphans (under 21 years of age), with
father dead and mother dead or remarried.

The counties formed from this lottery were Baldwin, Wayne and Wilkinson, GA.

Sarah,

I have not done much on William Burt, Sr. There are so many William Burts
doing that time period that it is very confusing! The one generally accepted
thing I have on him is his will dated 26 Jan 1824 in Halifax county, NC.
This abstract is from Margaret Hofmann's "Genealogical Abstracts of Wills,
1758-1824 Halifax County, NC".

Will #1012 pg. 695 William Burt, Sr. 26 Jan 1824 Feb. Ct. 1824
plantation whereon I now live and the land joining William C. Burt and my
stock and furniture etc. to be sold and the proceeds used to pay my debts...
daughters Rebeccah Burt, Elisabeth Burt, Martha Burt, Margaret Burt and
Nancy Kimbrill and son William C. Burt and granddaughter Sophia W.
Cartarphane negroes each... friend Rebeccah Neville and daughter Sally
Nevill negroes... Orren D. Carstarphane 4 shillings.
Wit.: Miles Smith, Jesse Nevill
Extrs.: my son William C. Burt and Osmond J. Nevill my son-in-law and my
friend Henry Garrett.

I am not sure who the William Burt is that married Sallie Ballard. Do you
have any ideas?

While looking up the above information I came upon another point of
confusion (as if I needed more ;-) I had always believed that William Burt,
son of Joseph Burt, who married Martha Elizabeth Davis was the one in Will
#725 William Burt dated 20 Nov 1804. Lists wife Elizabeth, sons Richard,
Willie, Squire Burt and daus. Nancy Crab, Patsy Burt, Betsy Burt. However
two other wills I found call this into doubt. The will of Elizabeth Elbanck
#620 dated 24 Jan 1798 Feb Ct. 1800 names dau. Martha Elizabeth Burt,
granddaus. Elizabeth Constantia Bond and Harriott Davis Bond. Then the will
of Mary Davis #873 widow & relict of Goodorum Davis, dated 30 Jan 1809 Aug
Ct 1815 lists nephew William L.(?) Burt son of William Burt when he comes of
age... niece Narriott D. Eppes wife of Richard Eppes and Maria Burt dau. of
William Burt... items left in trust of said William Burt for Harriott Eppes.
Extcs.: friends William Burt and Richard Eppes esquires of the Town of Halifax
Codecil: niece Martha Burt wife of William Burt

I conclude from this that our William Burt, son of Joseph, is the one
mentioned in the Davis wills, father of William (?) Burt, Maria Burt and
Harriott Burt Eppes. What do you two think? Who is the William Burt of
Will #725. Is he the son of William Burt, Sr.? There are just too many
William Burts to keep track of!!!

Good Hunting,
John

Barbara and Sarah,

I have been trying to determine relable age approximations for Joseph Burts
family using census records, marriage records, chidrens ages, etc. I have
not had a chance to check census records after 1790. The later censuses
have better age breakdowns. I have attached (correctly???) a group sheet for
Joseph and Elizabeth Burt. Check it out and let me know what you think.
Remember it is still a work in progress.

The age for Jesse Burt should read 1775 rather than 1767. That date came
from a DAR application and I don't know how relible it is. Please give me
some feedback.

Thanks,
John

I've been surmising all along that this Sarah MARSHALL is the sister of
Stephen MARSHALL (who m. Elizabeth BURT, sister of the above Joseph). Is
everyone else thinking along those lines? Any proof?

>He and his brothers Joseph, Richard, Jesse, Zacheus, and James left Halifax

Zaccheus BURT had 2 draws in the 1805 Georgia land lottery -- so he was
married and had lived in GA since at least 1802.

When I sent my previous message about the draws in the lottery, I had
included the categories for drawing in the 1805 lottery -- and one of the
qualifications I mentioned was that people drawing had to have lived in GA
for at least a year. I was getting that information from a summary of the
qualifications in the book, _1805 Georgia Land Lottery_.

Well, the book also includes a copy of the act setting up the lottery and the
act says, "...an inhabitant of the State, twelve month immediately preceding
the *passage* [my *] of this act...". The act was signed by Gov. Milledge on
11 May 1803. So Zaccheus may have been in GA as early as 1802.

The only problem I have with the above William being the brother of Joseph is
the date of the above will. Since Joseph d. in 1788, it just doesn't seem
likely that his brother would have died 36 years later -- although stranger
things have happened. I would think that the 1824 will is for a William in
the next generation -- the son of Joseph or another BURT.

Groves isn't the most correct of sources. I've entered practically all of
his book into my database -- simply for a frame of reference and to provide
names of people to check. I'm clueless on the William BURT = Sallie BALLARD
stuff.

I had been thinking (again, simply because of the dates) that the 1804
William BURT might be the brother of Joseph.

Lea -- I know I've seen Goodorum Davis somewhere. I have Goodwen DAVIS as
the son of Thomas DAVIS and Hartwell HODGES (thanks to you). Are Goodorum
and Goodwen the same?

I like the idea that William, son of Joseph, is the one mentioned in the
Davis wills. There's already a BURT - DAVIS - MARSHALL connection in my
line. Just to make matters more interesting (in my line) -- I recently
received a copy of the will of Joseph TURNER (d. 1852, Putnam Co., GA).
Joseph TURNER's dau., Martha, married William Blount MARSHALL (son of
Stephen MARSHALL & Elizabeth BURT -- dau. of Joseph BURT). In his will,
Joseph TURNER names a daughter, Eppes. I don't want to read too much into
this, though, because Eppes' mother might have been Rebecca HARRIS and there
might be a HARRIS - EPPES connection (I haven't done much HARRIS research)
and not a BURT-MARSHALL-DAVIS-TURNER connection.

Barbara and all,

I went through the 1790 census index for NC. Hope this helps (although I
think it just makes the William Burt business worse!).

Sarah
========================================================
The 1790 census index for NC has, in Halifax Dist., Halifax Co.:

Burt, John	1 WM > 16, 1 WM < 16, 1 WF, 1 slave

Burt, Richard	1 WM > 16, 0 WM < 16, 1 WF, 37 slaves [I would suspect
this was a newly-married couple, except for the number of slaves. It *seems*
more likely that all their children -- if any -- have grown and left home. I
have a copy of a will for a Richard Burt, proved Halifax Co., 1805 -- it
names sons John Burt & William (Arghh -- another one) Burt.]

Burt, Elizabeth 1 WM > 16, 3 WM < 16, 3 WF, 10 slaves
[Taking the children in the order Joseph named them in the will, the 3 WF
would be Elizabeth (mother), Elizabeth, Mary. The 3 WM < 16 could be
Richard, James, Zacheus. John was already living on his own land, according
to Joseph's will, so the WM > 16 could be Joseph, Stephen, William, or Jesse
-- unless Joseph and Stephen are the ones shown below -- most likely.
There's not a Jesse listed in the census index, but, of course, there are 4
William's -- so I vote for Jesse.]

Burt, Joseph	1 WM > 16, 0 WM < 16, 3 WF, 3 slaves

These 4 (above) were all shown listed one after the other. On a preceeding
page (still Halifax), there is:

Burt, John	1 WM > 16, 3 WM < 16, 3 WF, 1 Other, 4 slaves
Burt, William Senr.	1 WM > 16, 1 WM < 16, 8 WF, 12 slaves
Burt, William	2 WM > 16, 3 WM < 16, 4 WF, 0 slaves

Then on a later page (Halifax) there is:

Burt, Stephen 1 WM > 16

Then...Edenton Dist., Bertie Co.:

Burt, William	1 WM

Halifax Dist., Warren Co.:

Burt, William	2 WM > 16, 2 WM < 16, 3 WF, 20 slaves

because it seemed a tangent to the discussion at hand). I don't know if you
have any interest -- but given the Burt / Ballard stuff, I'm passing it
along.

On page 190 of Dr. Groves book _The Alstons and Allstons of North and South
Carolina_, he gives the following:
"Emily M. Cheek...Married in Warrenton, N. C. to John H. Burt, b. June 1,
1800, and d. March 27, 1845. (They resided near Ransom's bridge, and he was
the son of Wm. Burt = Sallie Ballard.) Their dau., Mary Alston Burt, b. May
5, 1833, and married April 18, 1854, in Warren County, to William J. Exum."

Dear Everyone,

I finally got so tired of going cross-eyed :) over the BURTs of NC (and GA)
that I've put together a time-line of every BURT I could find in all of the
books I have at home.

This has been saved as a text file and should be able to be opened in any
word processing program. The only thing is -- I imagine that, having saved
it as text, some of the formatting might have vanished. If anyone has any
interest in adding to it, or making comments or corrections or anything --
please feel free to add to the file and then send it back -- the whole thing
or just your additions / comments. I don't know if anyone else is interested
in this type of format -- it helps me to be able to look at everyone in
chronological order.

If anyone wants this and is unable to open it on your computer (or you can
open it, but it's a formatting disaster), let me know and I'll mail a disk
with the file saved as Word 6.0.

Joan & Ed: I didn't know if you would have any interest in this, but I
thought I'd send it along.

Regards,
Sarah

Sarah and the others

Sarah, I like your idea very, very much. And I can read with my Eudora
with no problem. Will save it as a text file.

I have started a time line also for the Burt individuals in Colonial
Virginia. I do not see that it will help prove any thing, but I think it
can help very much in keeping generations separated. I have found a couple
of Burt people listed there in the 1624 census. A Richard Burt also owned
land in Charles River county in 1642. Charles River was renamed York. Later
on Gloucester County was split off and the land that Richard owned in 1642
was in present day Gloucester county.

So, I guess I have a question for all.

Should we consider making a time line for all Burt individuals in all
states beginning with Colonial Virginia? Should the time lines be separate
by states? Whatever. Comments, Discussions, Other ideas?

I will certainly help.

Incidentally, I have found a couple of Burt people in Virginia in early
1800s with the name of John T. and William Burt. These are from microfilm
copies of note cards made by one Thelma Ironmonger Hansford and most of her
sources are included on her note cards. There is a William Burt and Fannie
his wife making a deed in York Co., VA Oct 16, 1798. (Deed Book 7, page
279. Her reference.)

There was a William Burt included in the will of Josias Burt as his
brother. (Wills and Inventories 1746-1759, Jan 5, 1758, page 472, again her
reference.) This then would make this William Burt a brother to my line.
With a grin, at this time, I am not sure who my ancestor was in this
specific generation. I have found I believe it is three different versions
of the family composition for that generation and the parents thereof.

Elder John T. apparently died, left a will and it was not fully settles
until after 1830. The names of his sons included Mercer M. Burt, John T.
Burt and a William B. Burt. Apparently John T. and William B. were not in
Virginia in 1834.

If you have other names that you would like for me to try to look out for,
I will try. Right now I have a bunch of York county films on order from
LDS. Will start trying to tie down all of the York County people included
in her notes.

Oh, for a couple of you new ones that Sarah sent her message to, Joan and
Ed, my paternal Grandmother was a Burt. The book references etc., for this
line start in York County, move over to Charlotte Co., VA and then to
Edgefield Co., SC by 1790. Then on to AL and to MS where my father was
born. I was born, raised and live in Texas.

I look forward to responses and assure all I will do at least my share. I
am very interested.

Everyone,

I'm interested in Richard Burt and his second wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Williams.
Does anyone know the name of her first husband or her parents? Or when
Richard & Elizabeth married?

I started thinking -- why did Richard have so many slaves, etc., when his
brothers had a moderate number? So then I thought -- what if Richard's
wealth came from his wife? When I saw the name Samuel Williams in the
Edgecombe Co. deeds, I started poking around in the Groves book on the
Alstons -- and may have a candidate for Mrs. Elizabeth Williams:

Elizabeth Alston (dau. of John Alston & Mary Clark) m. (c. 1728) Samuel
Williams.
Samuel Williams d. 1754, Edgecombe Co., NC

The Alston family was very wealthy -- and that might account for all those
slaves. Of course, there were *lots* of WILLIAMS. Does anyone have any
ideas?

Sarah

By George, I think she's got it! I believe that there were Alstons living
in Halifax near the Burts. I will have to check the census.

Hi everyone,

This is great! I have gotten so much information the last couple of days. I
see now that I will have to that another look at the Georgia records at the
Alabama Archives. I really have not done much research in that area.

I believe it was Barbara who asked about my source of information on Wilson
Carter being the guardian of the younger Burts in Warren county. That came
directly from "Daniel Grant Owen: His Ancestors, Descendants and their Kin"
by Frances Benson Chandler. Another Burt researcher, David Thomason of
Birmingham, sent me a zerox copy. The only source given was the 1790 census.
Is there a 1790 census, deluxe annotated edition that I am missing? :-) The
book is very useful because of all the families listed, but there are
factual errors.

I have the parents of Sarah Marshall, wife of John Burt, as John and
Elizabeth Marshall. John Marshall's Halifax will #608 names his wife,
Elizabeth, sons Starling, John & Allen Marshall; daus. Lucy Jelks, Mary
Moncrief, Sarah Burt, Rebecca Carroll & Sary Pitts.

The Daniel Owen book lists the following family for David Marshall, d. 1785
Halifax county, NC, married Mary Davis, daughter of Thomas Davis. Children:
Catherine Marshall, b. 18 Feb 1756
Lucy Marshall, b. 4 Sep 1758
William Marshall, b. 3 Oct 1760
James Marshall, b. 30 Aug 1762
Ann Marshall, b. 7 May 1765
Stephen Marshall, b. 27 Aug 1767
Mary Marshall, b. 17 Apr 1770
Jane Marshall, b. 26 Apr 1772
Sucky Marshall, b. 26 Feb 1774
Elizabeth Marshall, b. 26 Feb 1776
Sarah Marshall, b. 14 Feb 1778
Martha Marshall, b. 21 Nov 1780

I am still trying to sort out the William Burts. William Burt, Sr. who died
1824 must be the younger brother of Joseph. Joseph was only 54 when he died
so it is possible that a younger brother could outlive him by 36 years. This
seems to make the most sense to me since William's daughters married
Joseph's sons.

I am not sure about the 1804 William. I did find a will of a Willie Jones
dated 22 Feb 1798 which names daughter Patsy BURK[Burt] Jones. Witnesses
were John Eaton, Starling Marshall [son of John Marshall], William Burk
[Burt]. The 1804 William Burt had a daughter, Patsy.

One more guestion (just what you needed!) that Barbara's John H. Burt
brought up. Jesse Burt had daugther, Nancy Hurt Burt. Zacheuse also had a
daughter named Nancy Hurt Burt and son, Joel Hurt Burt. There are other Burt
descendants with the middle initial "H". So here's the question. Where did
the name HURT come from? It seems very odd that two brothers would have
three children with that name without some family connection.

Sarah, you asked about Goodorum Davis. Found will of Oroondatus Davis dated
29 June 1780, names wife Mary Davis, daus. Mary & Elizabeth Ann Davis.
Extrs: wife and my brothers Goodorum, Dolphin, and Thomas Davis. The mother
of Martha Elizabeth Davis, wife of William Burt, would appear to be
Elizabeth Elbanck whose will I gave earlier. Her 1800 will named dau. Martha
Elizabeth Burt. She was probably the Elizabeth Ann Davis named in
Oroondatus's [love that name :-)] will. Found record of J. Eelbank who died
intestate in 1765. Widow = Elizabeth.
1781 will of James Leslie witnessed by John Morgan, Elizabeth Eelbank, Ann
Machen, and Martha Elizabeth Eelbank. There are more Eelbank and Davis
wills. Let me know if you need more details.

That's enough damage for now.

Good hunting,
John

Dennis,

It's been awhile since we've written -- I hope everything is going well. I'm
in the midst of lots of messages on my BURT family of Halifax Co., NC, (which
is great) -- one of the messages brought up the HURT - BURT point above.

I've been curious about this same point for a couple of years -- but haven't
done any research to try to sort it out.

I have a Joel HURT as the son of William HURT & Priscilla YANCEY (I think you
gave me that information). Do you have anything in your database that might
connect the HURT & BURT families of Halifax Co., NC & GA?

Thanks for any help.

Sarah

I absolutely welcome and invite any one and every one to join in on the
Burt research in Virginia. Right now, I am a little bit "overwhelmed" with
sources. Then going to copies of records on microfilm that I can order
through the local LDS Family History Center, I find pages that are almost
impossible to read.

Does any one know it the Virginia Library in Richmond (now in the process
of moving to a new location) might have more legible copies? We have a
son in Virginia and will need to visit some time next year.
Unfortunately, he does not live in Richmond nor its suburbs; he lives in
Newport News.

I agree. Making reference to copyright material in such little information
as used in a time line does not seem to me to be any violation of copyright
laws.

I did send Barbara information about Larry Stevens' email address.

If and when we get this going, I too volunteer to edit the material going
into a time line.

Barbara has this posted on her Goodson web page and I think we should do
the same:

>Documentable additions to this information are eagerly accepted.

So, if she does these web pages, the others of us should help in this type
of "control" over the information being posted.

Hence, when we settle on a format, whatever, I will try to assist in this
too. But not to the point of keeping others from doing what they might
consider their own fair share and within their own capabilities and
desires. I told Barbara that this 77 year old is not interested in learning
how to do a web page, that I had rather do research. I think we all need to
follow a similar approach, except maybe where no one knows how to something
that might be critical to the success of our approach. I can't identify
such, just trying to illustrate a point.

The computer genealogy programs that I use are PAF and Ancestral Quest. I
will be happy also to maintain files for the group in these programs,
keeping them separate until we get some agreement to merge. For any one who
might not know of Ancestral Quest, it is a Windows based program, with
multi-media capabilities, that kind of stuff, but it also uses exactly the
same files as does DOS based PAF.

Kind regards to all.

You were kind enough to include me on your list for Burt information, so I'm
passing along to everyone else the Library of Virginia information.

The Library of Virginia has a homepage at:

http://leo.vsla.edu

The electronic card indexes have Confederate Rosters and other interesting
files available. The direct URL for that is:

http://image.vtls.com/collections/

The Burt family enters into the Mahone lines I'm researching. If anyone
encounters Mahone information -- in Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama
-- I'd welcome it. My husband, as nearly as I figure it, is the fifth
great-grandson of Joseph Burt Sr. (1731-1788) who was married to Elizabeth
Walton (1735-1790). Elizabeth Burt (1774-1820) married Stephen Marshall
(1667-1831); a daughter, Nancy Jones Marshall married Thomas N. Mahone (my
husband's line); Elizabeth Henry Marshall, another daughter of Elizabeth Burt
and Stephen Marshall, married Peter Flournoy Mahone.

Thanks

Hi Everyone,

I got this message some time back, but could not find a connection. Since
we're including all North Carolina Burts in our timeline, I thought this
might be helpful.

There seems to be as many John Burts as William Burts. They're springing up
like kudzu don't you think! This could be the brother of Joseph, son of John
and Grace Burtt.

Regards,
John

Everyone,

Last week John sent a message about William Burt and the Davis wills. He
had:

Elizabeth Elbanck will named:
dau. Martha Elizabeth Burt
gdaus. Elizabeth Constantia Bond, Harriott Davis Bond

Mary Davis (widow of Goodorum) will named:
nephew William L.(?) Burt (son of William Burt)
niece Harriot D. Eppes (wife of Richard Eppes)
Maria Burt (dau. of William Burt)
niece Martha Burt (wife of William Burt)

I've found a little more information that *might* start nailing these people
down.

First, the DAVIS family (this is all thanks to Lea who is extremely
knowledgeable about this family):

Thomas DAVIS (d. 1764, Halifax Co., NC) m. Hartwell HODGES. Children named
in will:
son Frederick Davis
son Goodwen Davis [believe this is Goodorum]
son Dolphin Davis
son Thomas Davis
son Arch Davis	[this is probably Archibald, but I want to get a copy of the
will to make sure it's not Arthur. If it is, in fact, Archibald, then the
Arthur Davis who keeps showing up in various deeds, etc., is, I think, a
cousin of Thomas Davis.]
son Orindatus Davis
nephew Dioclecian Davis (son of Lewis Davis) [Dioclesian's will was
written in 1830, Washington Co., GA. He named a son, Goodram]
wife Hartwel
daughter Sally Davis
brother Lewis Davis
[source: "Diggin' for Davises" newsletter, Vol. 2, Issue 1, Jan. 1996]

Thomas DAVIS is also the father of Mary DAVIS. Mary m. David MARSHALL. Mary
& David MARSHALL were the parents of Stephen MARSHALL who m. Elizabeth BURT
(dau. of JOSEPH).

More stuff:
==============================
From _Records of Estates, Halifax County, North Carolina_, Vol. II, David B.
Gammon:

"MATTHEWS, RAPER Francis Ward was apptd. gdn. of Oroondates Matthews, Mark
Matthews, Nancy Hartwell Matthews (or Nancy Matthews and Hartwell Matthews),
Elizabeth Matthews and Sally Matthews (orphans of the dec'd.), May, 1786."

Given the later Mathews - Fluellen connection, I thought this was
interesting.
================================
From _Marriages, Halifax County, North Carolina_, compiled by Susie Brickell
Anderson. The Dallas library has a date stamp on this of 1956. Some of this
is duplicating what John has already sent; I'm just including it anyway. All
the dates in this book are the year the will / deed, etc., were filed -- not
the date of the marriage. This isn't indexed, so I hope I've found everyone
who's interesting.

Burt, Richard to Elizabeth Williams
(deed book 9:312)

Carstarphen, Orren (son of James) to ___, dau of William Burt, Sr.
(the author cites Halifax will books 3:570 and 3:695, 1824)

Eppes, Richard to Harriet, niece of Mary Davis
(will book 3:573, 1809)

Fluellen, Shadrack to Sally, dau of Joseph Burt [???]
(will book 3:152, 1788)

Matthews, Raps to Sarah, dau of Arthur Davis
(will books 3:30, 3:184, 1781)

Neville, Osmond (son of Hardy Neville) to Sally, dau of William Burt Senr.
(wb 3:695, 1824)

"A list of marriages licenses granted by the clerk of court of Halifax County
North Carolina for the year 1786 certified by Montfort Eelbeck and Good.
Davis":

Burt, John to Sarah Marshall
Gamble, Edmond to Mary Hurt-Hurst-Burt "? illegible"
Burt, Joseph to Ann Read
Barber, James to Elizabeth Buck-Burt "?"

"Additional Marriages, Halifax County, North Carolina found since first
mimeographed":

Eppes, Richard to Harriet D. gr-dau Capt. Hance Bond DB30:293, 1839
Marshall, Fred'k to Martha gr-dau Capt. Hance Bond DB30:293, 1839
Read, Stephen to Doretha, dau. of Montfort Eelbeck [I put this in because of
the Joseph Burt marriage just above]
=================================
I've tried to piece this together and what I've come up with looks like this:

Elizabeth ___ m. ___ Eelbank [I'm thinking Eelbank and Eelbeck are the same
family, but maybe not.]
Children:
1. Martha Elizabeth m. William Burt (brother of Joseph? son of Joseph?)
2. dau. m. __ Bond
3. Mary m. Goodorum Davis

1. Martha Elizabeth Eelbank & William Burt.
Children:
William L.(?) Burt
Maria Burt

2. __ Eelbank & __ Bond
Children:
Elizabeth Constantia Bond
Harriott Davis Bond (m. Richard Eppes)

Does this make any sense?

Hi Bill and everyone,

I am attaching a timeline of Burts in Virginia. This is only a preliminary
list. I know that there is much more to add. I hope this helps.

Sarah, which Richard Burt married Elizabeth Williams? You suggested that she
might have been Elizabeth Alston, dau. of John and Mary Alston, and widow of
Samuel Williams. The marriage date for Samuel and her was c1728. Richard
Burt, son of John and Grace Burt, was born 1724, which would make her about
twenty years older than him.

I'm enjoying all the messages and ideas. Keep it up.

Happy Holidays,
John

Sarah,

Could you please pass these comments on to everyone. I am making a running
list as I read all of ya'lls great work. Do you want the Marshall data. I
think that there are going to be MANY intermarriages between the families.
Also Richard Dietz is the Davis expert. He writes the Diggin for Davis.
However, he and I are both not too sure about a possible confusion between
the Lewis and Arthur Davises. Another problem with same names and places.
Nothing new in my lines.

Elizabeth Eelbank widow of J. Eeelbank could not be Elizabeth Ann Davis as
she was born 17 Feb 1780. Orindatus died very young. He was born abt
1746. Neither of his daughters were married before 29 June 1780. [WB 3:21
