I will get them and, yes, they will include email addresses.
But, before I do that, I am also going to make a copy of some family group
sheets that I made up on my word processor a few years ago, such being based
on information from the Robert Mathis book. If there is any match between
the info from GenServ and this info, I will try to send it all together.
(Sure hope I can get my info in ASCII format; will try real hard to make
sure I have no mistakes..)

One other item. In my letter to you with the FGS (all of them were those
types I used in my word processor) I made mention of the source of my
father's name and also that he had a brother James Richard. I mentioned that
James was for Grandpa Adams, whom I believe was always called James or W.J.
I mentioned that I didn't know where Uncle Richard's name came from. Maybe a
Richard Burt? I will try to contact a cousin and see if he has any idea
about that. This possibility just occurred to me after I wrote the earlier
letter to you.
Will get busy on this. And forward the "stuff" on when I get it returned and
then checked the possibility of an interrelationship with the info I
accumulated.

I do thank you for the Burt Manuscript. While I have not fully digested all
of it yet, I am enjoying it. And yes, I do find certain parallels between
that and the book by Mathis.
Incidentally, Mathis has it that Robert Burt, of Edgefield County, SC was
married 1) to Ritter Anderson and 2) to Bettie Goode. The Will for Robert
Burt names his wife as Ritter and then Robert dies in less than three
months. I do not believe he was married a second time.
I finally got around to extracting Burt marriages from my CD ROM for North
Carolina and Virginia. I am enclosing herewith the NC marriages. Should you
want the VA marriages, I will send those too. I am hoping these are in ASCII
format.
I have made contact with another Burt searcher, she lives in Baton Rouge and
her husband is descended from the Edgefield County, SC Burts.
Y'all on spring break this week? We are here. Can actually drive out on the
main streets and eat out without too much crowding.

Hi! You're right on the money about where I'm looking! My Grandmother was
Mary Ina Burt Davis who's parents were Hugh LeGrande Burt and Mamie Lou
Rutherford, Hugh LeGrande's parents were William Marshall Burt, Jr.( went by
Sr.) and Annie Mariah Vann, William Marshall, Jr.'s parents were William
Marshall Burt and Amanda D. Booth.
I'll have to sit down when I have more time and give you a breakdown on when
born and all that stuff, but this is as good as I can do tonight, I'm give
out from a day at the lake.

7-25-1875 in Pittsview, AL and he Married Amanda D. Booth who died on

I forgot to say that there was a Burt plantation in Pittsview that was built
by William Marshall Burt, Sr. It is gone now, but a few people in town still
remember where it was. I think the land is now owned by George Boon. At
least I know that he still knows where it was. Next time I go that way I'm
going to see if he will go out there with me and see if I can tell anything.
I know that there was a cemetery on the property, but my great aunt, Bertha
Owens Burt, says that it only contained the negro servants. I can at least
go look! Aunt Bertha is going to be 90 years old in October so she still
remembers some of the things that others don't.

There are other names of children from each of the above families and I will

I have a little information about an Elias Burt who apparently departed
England in 1719 at age 20 to be indentured to a Christopher Veal in Virginia
for 4 years.
Then there apparently is a record of the marriage of an Elias Burt to an
Anne Finney in Middlesex Co., VA in 1726.
I have done absolutely no research to determine if these are the same people.
Does any of this seem of interest to you?
How are all of you doing this summer. We are scorching in our area. Our
weather record for this year is keeping pace to be perhaps the 4th hottest

Hi Barbara,
I was hoping to hear from you. I am finishing up doing what I should have
done in the first place, i.e. adding source info to my database. I will mail
you a copy very soon. I won't keep you waiting on your question. I found the
DOB of Joseph and Richard in "The Register of Abington Parish, Gloucester
County, Virginia: 1677-1780" compiled by Robert W. Robins, Hanford House
Publishers, 1981. It is available at the Birmingham Library Southern Studies
Annex. They also have the Halifax county deed books done by Hoffmann. The
Abington Register reads: "Joseph Burt, son of John Burt, was baptised
November 7, 1731." Other entries give John's wife as Grace and mention other
children including Richard. William is not mentioned, but I include him
based on numerous ties. I can mail you a copy of my copies from the Abington
book if you would like. I wish I could find it for sale somewhere.
Let me know is you have any luck tying John and Richard Burt the elder
together. One possible clue is "Records of Colonial Gloucester County, VA
Vol. I" (B'ham Library) mentions a Richard Burt living 1642 & 1649 Robins
Neck on Severn River in Gloucester Co. I believe he may have been John's
gfather. I am guessing at John's DOB as about 1693 based on age of oldest
child. There were many Burts living on VA penisula from 1632 to 1750 (see
Cavaliers and Pioneers) but there are gaps that I cannot connect.
Thanks for your part in getting the Autauga records on the net. AGS in
working on updating and correcting the cemetery records. We did Pine Flat
and Pine Level first so that we could get Henry and Sarah Hunt listed
correctly! Maybe we can update the computer records too?
I will try to get you something in the mail this weekend.

I almost forgot. A Dr. Mann from Halifax Co., NC wrote me several years ago.
He is the one that referred me to the Abington Parish Records. His ancestor
Elizabeth (Alston) Williams was the second wife of Richard Burt, Joseph's
Brother. Richard's first wife was Rebecca Stevens which was mentioned in the
"Records". The Stevens/Stephens also came to Halifax county and there are
several ties between them and the early Burts which further links the Burt
family back to Gloucester, VA. Dr. Mann had a little different
interpretation of the "Records" than I did on some people. I will send you a
copy of his rough pedigree chart so that you came decide for yourself.

Sorry to take so long to write. I had a mishap with my Brothers Keeper files
and lost about 100 names and all my sources that I had worked so hard to
update. I have been working on that and neglecting my e-mail.
Regarding Elizabeth Walton(?) Burt the only source I have is the chart that
I sent you. Supporting evidence is the use of the middle name Walton twice
in the family of John Mathews and Polly Burt. They are obviously using
family surnames for their childrens' middle names. It's not much, but it's
all I've got.
Speaking of Elizabeth, I just received a package of information from another
Burt researcher from Birmingham. He had recently returned from a visit to
the Ellen Payne Odem Library in Moultrie, GA and sent me a copy of a book he
found there. The title is "Daniel Grant Owen: His Ancestors, Descendants and
Their Kin" by Frances Benson Chandler, 1968. It contains sections on the
Burts and the Marshalls. It lists Joseph Burt's wife as Elizabeth BREWTON
with the only source listed as the notes of Mrs. D. F. Martin. Have you run
across the Brewton name in connection with the Burts before?
The book lists children of some of Joseph's children who moved to Georgia
including Jesse, James and Zacheus. Elizabeth and Richard are mentioned, but
no children given. According to the author James, Richard and Zacheus moved
to Georgia after 1790 with their guardian Wilson Carter.
Notes in the back of the book include this: "In the notes sent to me by Mrs.
D. F. Martin of Hinesville, GA, the following line for Joseph's ancestors is
given: 'Joseph Burt (1731-1788) b. in Abington Parish, Gloucester Co., VA,
may have been the son of John (b. 1687) and Grace ____ Burt; the grandson of
John (b. 1658) and Sarah Day (dau. of Thomas and Sarah Cooper Day) Burt;
great grandson of Deacon Jonathon (bapt. 1624/5-1715) and Elizabeth Lobdel
(b. 1648) Burt; great-great grandson of Henry and Ulalia Marche Burt, who
settled in Springfield, Mass. in 1640. It is claimed that the Christian
names, Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary, Nathanial, Joseph, John and Rebecca, were
used in sucessive generations, as given in 'Genealogical Records of Henry
and Ulalia Burt', by R. H. Durnham. The fact that the unusual name, Ulalia,
has been used in the Burt families of Georgia for generations is more to the
point, since the other names are found in many families. An E has been added
to make Ulalia 'Eulalia' now.
Another suggested line of ancestors for Joseph goes back to Massachusetts
also, but to a different place-- Taunton instead of Springfield: 'Richard
Burt is recorded as a 'First Settler' in 1639. His son Richard, married
Charity ___ (names in his will proven 1685) along with his children: Abel,
Richard, Joseph, Ebenezer, Ephraim, Mary and Abagail Burt. Joseph was born
May 15, 1666, and when about twenty nine years old settled in Virginia,
where his son Joseph II was born (from notes of Mrs. Nellie Burt Smith,
Orlando, FL)."
The Marshall section of the book lists all the children including DOBs for
David and Mary Davis Marshall, parents of Stephen who married Elizabeth
Burt. It lists the children of Stephen and Elizabeth as well, something I
did not have. Do you need this information?
I thought the tie in to the Mass. Burts interesting. If we could connect to
that line we would have it made. I believe Henry came in on the "Mayflower".
unfortunately I can't believe it. There is too much evidence that our line
came into Jamestown. The name 'Eulalia' he mentions does appear in the
Georgia Burts but not until the 1860s in the descendants of one of Zacheus'
sons who married into the Owen family. What do you think of all this? At
least the book gives a lot of useful names and dates of Georgia Burts and
Marshalls.

Well, what an interesting note from John Brown -- thank you.
I got the name of Joseph Burt's wife as Elizabeth Brewton from my cousin,
Chad Kimbrough -- I think he got it from another cousin, Keach Floyd
(deceased). Given the fact that Chad, Keach's wife, and I are all
descendants of Daniel Grant Owen -- I rather imagine Keach got it from the
Chandler book.
I haven't seen the Chandler book. Another researcher copied the portion
dealing with Daniel Grant Owen and sent it to me, but I had no idea that it
contained Burt and Marshall information.
Of course, I haven't done *a thing* on Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Burt, nor
much on anyone else. I've been a little swamped at work and genealogy has
been pushed aside somewhat.
I'm planning on moving to Georgia next month. I don't have a job there, so
maybe I'll have a little more time for family research.

Sorry that I have not been back in communication since our return. We did
make it back, although that interstate from Jackson to Memphis will keep me
from going that particular route for a few years. And Friday afternoon

I found another error in the book by Mathis. I did get an email yesterday
from a fellow descended from a John Burt in Gloucester Co in the late 1600s.
Have responded but no return as of yet.
