Copy received via e-mail by Chris Chester from Paul Brewer, 12 Sept. 2008, Chris Chester, Kent, New York, p.16. The Brewers of York County Association Papers provided a good deal of family information for the generations of Brewers found in New Brunswick. The papers, however, did make the incorrect claim that the progenitor of the New Brunswick Brewers, Adolphus Brower, was a son of Jacob Brouwer and Anna Bogardus. This claim has since been shown to be incorrect.

Abraham Brewer1

b. 15 April 1744, d. 17 May 1814
  • Abraham Brewer was born on 15 April 1744 (from g.s.).2
  • He married Eunice Griswold, daughter of Elijah Griswold and Abigail Thomas, between 1775 and 1780.3
  • Abraham Brewer died on 17 May 1814 at Chemung Co., New York; aged 70y 1m 2d.2,4
  • He was buried at Riverside Cemetery, near Lowman, Chemung Co., New York.5
  • He was a Revolutionary War soldier. Said to have served in the 7th Regt., Albany Co. Militia, Col. Abraham J. Van Alstine (hunting and guarding tories, no dates). Also in Col. Hay's Regt., Orange Co. Militia in 1778 (note: this second claim likely belong to a different Abraham Brower).2
  • He appeared on the census in 1790 at Chemung, Montgomery Co., New York, as Abraham Brewer, with a household of 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16 and 4 females. He is enumerated next to Daniel Brown? (maybe Brower), followed by Elijah Griswold and Gideon Griswold.6
  • Tioga County was set off from Montgomery County in 1791. Chemung County was formed from Tioga County on 29 March 1836 (New York. Laws of New York. 59th Session, Chapter 077, Section 1, page 102).
  • He appeared on the assessment list of at Chemung, (then Tioga Co.), New York, on 10 December 1799 with a house and farm. Real estate valued at $603, personal estate at $88. He is recorded just after James Wilson, and just before, Gideon Griswold, Jonathan Griswold and Elisha Griswold.7
  • He appeared on the census in 1800 at Chemung, Tioga Co., New York, as Abm. Brewer with a household of 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male over 45, 1 female 16-25, 1 female over 45. Listed in succession are Elisha Griswold, Elijah Griswold, Gideon Griswold, and Abm. Brewer.8,9
  • He appeared on the census in 1810 at Chemung, Tioga Co., New York, as Abraham Brewer, with a household of 1 male over 45 and 1 female over 45. Enumerated on the same sheet are Elijah Brewer and Abraham Brewer, Jr.10
  • Discovering origins of Abraham Brewer, should begin with finding the location of his marriage to Eunice Griswold. It is therefore suggested that researchers should concentrate on finding the exact location of the family of Elijah Griswold during the period of 1770 to 1780.
  • John Brewer and Abraham Brewer, are both Revolutionary War soldiers buried in Riverside Cemetery, Chemung, New York. Any relationship between the two as not yet been determined.
  • Although we do not have complete lineages, we believe that two descendants of Abraham Brewer have particpated in the Brewer DNA Project and have taken Y-DNA tests. The two (kit #s 184043 and 132341) have the predicted haplogroup of R-M269. They match each other on 64/67 STR markers. The two kits are either both descended from Abraham Brewer, or are descended from an ancestor of Abraham Brewer who lived sometime within the past 20 generations.
