Johannes Mynderts Wemple1

b. circa 1675
  • After the French and Indian attack on Schenectady on 9 Feb 1690, Johannes was taken as a prisoner to Canada, along with two of his father's slaves. After his return he acted in his father's stead as Trustee of the Schenectady Patent, until 1714, and was then appointed as one of the five trustees under the second patent. In 1711, Johannes and four partners built Fort Hunter at the junction of the Mohawk River and Schoharie Creek. He served as a Lieut. in Capt. Glen's Co. in 1715. He moved to the vicinity of Fort Hunter in 1733 and became one of the first settlers of that area. He was granted 540 acres there in 1737. He was also granted 1935 acres near Schenectady in that same year.1
