Claes Arentsen Toers1

b. circa 1642, d. 10 October 1724
  • Also known as Klaas Arendsz Tours.3
  • Patronymic: Claes Arentszen.
  • Likely the second son (named for his mother's father). He probably came to New Netherland with his parents before 1655. He was a prominent citizen in Bergen and held many offices there. In 1662 he signed the petition asking for a clergyman (implying he was of majority age at that time). He was Court Messenger for the village of Bergen on 17 March 1664, and received a parcel of land outside of the north gate for his service. On 5 Feb 1671 he was constable of Bergen, when he witnessed the will of Guert Coerten. He was elected Schout and Secretary on 18 Aug 1673, during the brief period in which the Dutch had regained control of the colony. On 26 March 1674 he was named as one of the deputies from Bergen to the Council of New Orange (New York City). Claes Arentsen Toers was appointed a member of the Court on 5 Dec 1683.1

  • Jan Arentsen Toers was born before 1655 at probably Amsterdam, The Netherlands.1

  • On 9 April 1678 he was appointed as one of the executors of the estate of Englebert Steenhuys. Two days later he was attacked and severely wounded by an Indian, Knatsciosan, at the house of his brother Claes. The Governor and Council met at Bergen with the Sachems of Hackinsack on 24 Apr 1678, at which time they acknowledged that the offender deserved corporal punishment, but, as Jan Toers was mending, asked for his release, promising that if he ever again attempted the like they would deliver him up "for justice without mercy to be done unto him." The Indians bound themselves to pay one hundred fathoms of wampum, or the equivalent in skins, within twenty days.1
