  • Maj. Nicholas Shapleigh was killed on 29 April 1682; by a falling mast at the launching of a vessel at the shipyard of John Diamond. He left no children. His widow Alice, his deceased sister's three daughters, and his descesed brother Alexander's son John were heirs to his estate.2
  • He was called merchant of Kingsweare in 1641, and was at Kittery, Maine in Aug. 1644. He was a promanent early settler of Kittery, Maine. Selectman at Kittery in 1648 and for many years until 1669; Treasurer for the Province of Maine in 1649; Captain in 1653; Major in 1656, and a magistrate in 1662. He was among those who signed the acknowledgement of subjection to the Massachusetts Bay Government on 18 May 1653. See NEHGS 95:182-184 for details on the life of Nicholas Shapleigh.2
