  • Benjamin Many was born on 15 June 1776 at Craigsville, Orange Co., New York.1,2
  • He married first on 18 October 1796 Deborah Garrison, daughter of Isaac Garrison and Martha Denton.2
  • Benjamin Many married Laura Terpenning at Plattekill, Ulster Co., New York, on 20 April 1808.3
  • Benjamin Many died on 23 June 1836 at Wallkill, Ulster Co., New York.1,2
  • He was buried at New Hurley Cemetery, Ulster Co., New York.4
  • He appeared on the census in 1800 at Newburgh, Orange Co., New York, with a family of one male over 16, 3 males under 16, and one female.4
  • He is possibly, in 1810, the Benjamin Many in the 5th Ward of New York City, aged 26-45 with a household of one female 16-26, one male under 10, and one male 10-16 (if so, his other children would have had to be living elsewhere).5
  • He is believed to be the Benjamin S. Many/Manny who served as a lieutenant in the New York Artillery and as a lieutenant in Capt. Luff's Co. in the New York Militia during the War of 1812, from 2 Sep to 3 Dec 1814. A descendant has stated that he guarded guns at Gravesend Bay for less than a year during the war. As a widow, Laura Many applied for bounty land in his right in 1857 and received a pension of $8 a month until her death. It is possible that Benjamin was appointed one of the overseers of highways in Crawford, Orange Co., New York in 1823.4
  • He appeared on the census in 1830 at Montgomery, Orange Co., New York.5
  • Administration of Benjamin Many's estate was granted on 28 June 1836, at Orange Co., New York, to his widow, Laura Many. The estate was valued at less than $800, and on that date only one daughter, Mehitable, was married. All of his surviving children lived in Orange Co. with the exceptions of Daniel, whose residence was unknown, and Robert, who lived in Louisiana.5

Daniel Many1

b. 1 March 1783, d. 2 December 1826
  • Daniel Many was born on 1 March 1783 at Craigsville, Orange Co., New York.1,2
  • He married Susanna Birdsall, daughter of Daniel Birdsall and Anna Thorne, before 1809.2
  • Daniel Many died on 2 December 1826.1,2
  • He was buried at Friends Cemetery, Plattekill, Ulster Co., New York.3
  • After their marriage Daniel and Susanna Many settled in a house on the southwest corner of Gidney Ave. and Stone (now Prospect) St. in Newburgh, Orange Co., New York. Daniel is said to have owned a considerable portion of a large farm he worked, extending from Gidney Ave. to West St., South St. north to the city limits. Prior to 1825, part of this land was possessed by Pedro Leon, a Spanish settler who raised Merino sheep. When the property was passed to his son it became known as the David D. Leon farm. About 1928, the land was sold and cut through with some streets, one of which, Roe St., would later find Daniel's great-grandson, Edmund A. Many, building houses including one for himself and one for his sister. In 1814, Daniel and his wife and two minor children requested membership in the Valley (Plattekill) Quaker Church. Susanna had been disowned by them on 22 Feb 1809 for marrying outside the church.3

François Many1

b. 18 August 1711
  • François Many was born on 18 August 1711.1
  • He was baptized on 19 August 1711 at French Church of New York, New York City, New York, Samuel Vincent et Elizabeth Maynard parain et mareinne.1
  • He married first at Christ Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 4 July 1736 Mary Miranda, daughter of Isaac Miranda.2
  • François Many married Margaret Cox, daughter of Peter Cox and Margaret, at Christ Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 21 June 1747.2
  • François Many was buried on 20 July 1770 at Christ Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.2
  • Also known as Francis Manij (marriage record).2
  • Also known as Francis Manney.
  • In 1738, Francis Many, sailmaker, is noted in connection with land in New Jersey, 3314 timbered and watered acres in the Old Purchase on the head of the South Branch of the Rarington (sic) River about 12 miles from Cornelius Van Horne's mills, near the pond of water the Indians called Kant-kan-i-auring in Hunterdon County. At this time Francis is living on Walnut Street in Philadelphia.2
  • In 1749 and in 1753, Francis Many, sailmaker, and his wife, Margaret sold land in Passyunk, a township in southern Philadelphia County in the district settled by Swedish immigrants before the arrival of William Penn. These lands had been inherited by Margaret from her parents. In 1754, a deed of partition was recorded between Israel Cox (only son of Peter, deceased) and his wife, Christiana, and Francis Many and Margaret, his wife.2
  • Daniel Depuy and Elinor his wife, Jacob Weise and Rebecca his wife, and Francis Many and Margaret his wife, sold land bordering the Schuykill River north of Greys Ferry Road to Charles Meredith on 7 May 1751. This land was part of a tract which Edmund Andros, Governor of New York province, had granted in 1676 to Peter Daboe (a.k.a. Peter Matson). Following Matson's death, his son sold land in 1717 to Peter Cock and Margaret, his wife, who, on their deaths, left the land to their daughters, Elinor Depuy, Rebecca Weise and Margaret Many.3
  • Among the baptisms at Christ Church, Philadelphia is that of Benjamin (b. 10 Mar 1754; bpt. 27 Apr 1754), son of Peter, a slave of Francis Many.3
  • Francis Many's estate is recorded on the Pennsylvania tax list of 1779 for lands in Solebury Twp., Bucks County.3
  • There is a question regarding the placement of the first cousins, Francis Many, son of Jacque, and Francis Many, son of Jeremie. Francis, the son of Jacque, actually named his first son Jeremiah, and did not name a son James, while Francis, the son of Jeremie, named a son James, but did not name a son Jeremiah. Following the conventional naming paterns of the day, it would seem more probable that the two cousins named Francis Many should actually be switched in their placement. The current placement is based upon that which appeared in the written ancestry of the Aymar family (1903). Kenneth Schoonmaker in Many Families Named Magny...(1:10-11) points out this conundrum and adds that family tradition has promoted the current placement, which is also backed up by the marriages of brother and sister, Francis and Anna Magdalena to Miranda siblings, in Philadelphia, in successive years (Francis Many, son of Jacque is not known to have had a sister named Anna Magdalena, although if one is found that would certainly boost the argument that the two Francises are presently placed incorrectly). This matter should not be considered closed.

  • He married Eunice Wines, daughter of Barnabas Wines and Eunice Hallock, in 1790.2
  • James Many died on 15 July 1805 or 1812.1,2
  • James Many's name appears as a private on an undated list of certificates returned by John Hathorn for pay of his regiment of militia for Nov 1779, belonging to Orange Co., New York. Many, wrote that "during the Revolution, when the British came up the Hudson and captured Stony Point and Fort Montgomery, a call was sent out through the back country for help. My great-grandfather (Barnabas) was sick in bed...My grandfather was a boy not quite 16. His father put in his hands his old flintlock musket and told him to go. He went over the mountians and fought through the battle, but managed to escape and wandered all night through the mountains and got home safely."2

  • Jean Many was born circa 1669 at Meschers, Saintonge, Charente-Maritime, France.3
  • He married Jeanne Machet, daughter of Jean Machet and Jeanne Thomas, at New York City, New York, circa 1694.4
  • Jean Many died before March 1702/3.5,6
  • Also known as Jean Magny or Magni.7,5
  • Also known as John Maney.
  • Also known as John Manning (as called in the will of his mother-in-law).8
  • Jean Magny's name does not appear at the early Huguenot settlement at Narragansett, Rhode Island, although the names of Jacques and Jeremie Magny do.9
  • Letters of Denization were granted to Jean Many on 25 April 1693 at London, England, (dated 15 Apr 1693, New York).10
  • John Many is recorded on the tax list in New York City from 1696 through 1699. He lived in the East Ward in one of two houses owned by Carsten (Christopher) Luerson. Capt. William Kidd was living in the next house during some of those years (this has resulted in some descendants speculating that Jean and his brothers, may too, have been involved in piracy). In the 1703 census he is living in the South Ward.11
  • Jean Maney and his wife, Jeanne Machet, were members of the French Church at New York in 1696.12
  • Inventory of estate taken on 7 March 1702/3 by James Many and Elias Boudinot.6

  • Jean Magny was a mariner. He is referred to in some town records as, "Captain" Many. He commanded at least one ship in the West Indies trade. New York harbor shipping records show the arrival on 19 May 1701 of the brigantine Laurel, from Jamaica, Capt. Jean Magny, Master. His great-grandson, Dr. James Manney, is said tohave had an amethyst watch fob which was originally used as a seal. On it was a ship in full sail, and underneath the phrase, "de Magny." Jean Magny had previously been in Jamaica. In the accounts regarding the settlement of his father-in-law's estate it is noted that Peter Machet had paid £13 to "John Manning for charges in the sickness and burial of said John Machet deceased in Jamaica."11
  • The name of Magny is among the Huguenot settlers carved on the Huguenot monument in Hudson Park, New Rochelle, New York.11
