• Shortly after his marriage, Barnabas and his wife must have moved to New York City. In the New York City directory of 1796 he is listed as a stage proprietor living at 3 Cortlandt Street. The directories of 1797 and 1798 state that he had a stage office and tavern, first at 22 John St., then at 48 Cortlandt St. He is supposed to have bought the family farm from his father in 1799 for 500 pounds. He lived there and farmed until his death. He served in the militia, first as a lieutenant, than a captain in 1807 and 1813. He resigned from the militia in 1815. During the War of 1812, Barnabas Many was 1st Major in the New York Detached Militia in the regiment commanded by Lt. Col. Smith. He was paid for service from 8 Sep 1814 until 14 Dec 1814, and served at Staten Island. Barnabas and his wife, and two of their sons, were members of the Blooming Grove Congregational Church in 1824.³

• He is believed to be the Benjamin S. Many/Manny who served as a lieutenant in the New York Artillery and as a lieutenant in Capt. Luff's Co. in the New York Militia during the War of 1812, from 2 Sep to 3 Dec 1814. A descendant has stated that he guarded guns at Gravesend Bay for less than a year during the war. As a widow, Laura Many applied for bounty land in his right in 1857 and received a pension of $8 a month until her death. It is possible that Benjamin was appointed one of the overseers of highways in Crawford, Orange Co., New York in 1823.⁴

• After their marriage Daniel and Susanna Many settled in a house on the southwest corner of Gidney Ave. and Stone (now Prospect) St. in Newburgh, Orange Co., New York. Daniel is said to have owned a considerable portion of a large farm he worked, extending from Gidney Ave. to West St., South St. north to the city limits. Prior to 1825, part of this land was possessed by Pedro Leon, a Spanish settler who raised Merino sheep. When the property was passed to his son it became known as the David D. Leon farm. About 1928, the land was sold and cut through with some streets, one of which, Roe St., would later find Daniel's great-grandson, Edmund A. Many, building houses including one for himself and one for his sister. In 1814, Daniel and his wife and two minor children requested membership in the Valley (Plattekill) Quaker Church. Susanna had been disowned by them on 22 Feb 1809 for marrying outside the church.³

• In 1738, Francis Many, sailmaker, is noted in connection with land in New Jersey, 3314 timbered and watered acres in the Old Purchase on the head of the South Branch of the Rarington (sic) River about 12 miles from Cornelius Van Horne's mills, near the pond of water the Indians called Kant-kan-i-auring in Hunterdon County. At this time Francis is living on Walnut Street in Philadelphia.²
• In 1749 and in 1753, Francis Many, sailmaker, and his wife, Margaret sold land in Passyunk, a township in southern Philadelphia County in the district settled by Swedish immigrants before the arrival of William Penn. These lands had been inherited by Margaret from her parents. In 1754, a deed of partition was recorded between Israel Cox (only son of Peter, deceased) and his wife, Christiana, and Francis Many and Margaret, his wife.²
• Daniel Depuy and Elinor his wife, Jacob Weise and Rebecca his wife, and Francis Many and Margaret his wife, sold land bordering the Schuykill River north of Greys Ferry Road to Charles Meredith on 7 May 1751. This land was part of a tract which Edmund Andros, Governor of New York province, had granted in 1676 to Peter Daboe (a.k.a. Peter Matson). Following Matson's death, his son sold land in 1717 to Peter Cock and Margaret, his wife, who, on their deaths, left the land to their daughters, Elinor Depuy, Rebecca Weise and Margaret Many.³

• There is a question regarding the placement of the first cousins, Francis Many, son of Jacque, and Francis Many, son of Jeremie. Francis, the son of Jacque, actually named his first son Jeremiah, and did not name a son James, while Francis, the son of Jeremie, named a son James, but did not name a son Jeremiah. Following the conventional naming paterns of the day, it would seem more probable that the two cousins named Francis Many should actually be switched in their placement. The current placement is based upon that which appeared in the written ancestry of the Aymar family (1903). Kenneth Schoonmaker in Many Families Named Magny...(1:10-11) points out this conundrum and adds that family tradition has promoted the current placement, which is also backed up by the marriages of brother and sister, Francis and Anna Magdalena to Miranda siblings, in Philadelphia, in successive years (Francis Many, son of Jacque is not known to have had a sister named Anna Magdalena, although if one is found that would certainly boost the argument that the two Francises are presently placed incorrectly). This matter should not be considered closed.

The Aymars, Lajeurs, DeKlyns, and Emburys all lived in this neighborhood at the time. In 1810 there is a listing of Many & Son (Francis) with a business address at 169 Washington and a home address at 163 Washington. In 1811 he and Benjamin are listed as smiths with Francis living at 414 Greenwich St. As the city grew in a direction uptown, Francis Many and those families closely allied to him moved in that direction. At the time of his death he was living on Carmine Street near Bedford, with his widowed daughter, Mrs. Rachel Rivers.²

My great-grandfather (Barnabas) was sick in bed...My grandfather was a boy not quite 16. His father put in his hands his old flintlock musket and told him to go. He went over the mountians and fought through the battle, but managed to escape and wandered all night through the mountains and got home safely."²
