Barnet Lewis1

b. between 1750 and 1760, d. between 12 February 1807 and 19 February 1807
  • Barnet Lewis was probably born between 1750 and 1760.
  • He died between 12 February 1807 and 19 February 1807.
  • He was a Revolutionary War soldier. Barnett Lewis from Somerset Co., New Jersey. Also, Barney Lewis of Somerset and Edward Lewis of Somerset.2
  • He was found on the tax list at Bernards Twp., Somerset Co., New Jersey, in 1792 (also there in 1793, 1796, 1797, and 1803).3
  • His will was dated on 12 February 1807 proved 19 Feb 1807. Barnet Lewis of Bernards Twp., Somerset Co., New Jersey. Lands to be rented out or left in the hands of William Duke, for the support of my aged father, Edward Lewis, during his life. After father's death, real and personal estate to be sold and divided into three shares. Edward Brewer and Mary Brewer (son and daughter of John Brewer and Elsie, his first wife, my sister), each one share. Brother, Edward Lewis, 1/2 share. Sister, Elsey Duke (wife of William Duke), 1/2 share. Executors: Jonathan Pennington and William Smith (on 16 Feb 1807 adds William Duke as an additional executor). Witnesses: David Morton, Jonathan Alward, John Heath. Presented for probate by Jonathan Pennington and William Smith. Inventory taken 9 Mar 1807 by John Heath and Thomas Lewis. Total - $348.87. (Somerset Co. File 1332 R).1,4
  • Edward Lewis and Barnet Lewis, are suggested as father and son by Ralph K. Potter in Lewises of Northern New Jersey. Potter notes the 1807 will of Barnet Lewis and its provision for providing for "my aged father Edward Lewis," and mention of "my brother Edward." Potter can find no other Edward Lewis who would be living in 1807 and who would be old enough to be the father of Barnet Lewis. He suggests that Edward Lewis may have been married prior to his marriage to Nancy Crowell "(the first wife may have been named Elsie Barnet or Burnet"), and had four children, Barnet, Edward, Elsie and Elsey. However, later in his book, Potter mentions "Three Other N.J. Lewises of Interest." One of these is an Edward Lues (Lewis?) of Basking Ridge who had the inventory of his estate taken 17 Nov 1731. This Edward cannot be a son of Samuel Lewis (who's son Edward was still living in 1736) but he "could have been a nephew." Alice Lewis was the executor of his estate, and the inventory suggests he had a substantial house. This unplaced Edward Lewis (inventory taken 1731) may have been the ancestor of Barnet Lewis. Potter was apparently unaware of the ages of Barnet Lewis' nephew and niece, Edward and Mary Brewer, mentioned in his will. All indications are that they were born in the 1770s, therefore implying that their mother, Elsie, sister to Barnet, was born in the 1750s. She would then be a contemporary to Edward Lewis (b.1750 himself) and could not be a daughter. It is not likely that Edward Lewis married twice, and it is not lilely that Barnet, Edward, Elsie and Elsey, are his children.5
  • Barnet Lewis is a possible descendant of Edward Lewis.
