Tunis Brouwer

b. circa 1730
  • Tunis Brouwer was born circa 1730 at probably Westchester Co., New York.1
  • Also known as Tunas Brewer.
  • Also known as Teunis Brewer.2,3
  • No baptism record has been found for Tunis (Teunis) Brouwer. He has been identified as a son of Hendrick Brouwer and Jannetje Crancheyt by Naomi C. Brewer (1981) and this identification is very likely. Tunis would have been named for his maternal grandfather, Teunis Crancheyt.
  • He was found on the tax list at Southern Precinct, Dutchess Co., New York, from June 1754 to 1765.4
  • He served during at the Revolutionary War. He is on the 18 Jun 1776 muster roll of the Third Regt. of Col. Pierre Van Cortlandt's Westchester County Brigade.5
  • "Tunis was not on the tax records of Phillipstown at the time of the Revolution and was apparently at that time a resident of Cortlandt Manor. People were back and forth between Cortlandt Manor (leased land owned by the Van Cortlandt family in what is now Westchester County) and what is now Putnam County (all of present day Putnam Co. was owned by the Philipse family and was also leased land). In both cases the resident paid taxes.
Several generations of the Brewer family, Tunis and son John, lived in the area of lower Putnam Co. where there were few church records and other records are sparse."2
  • A Tunis Brewer, private, is on the muster roll of Lieut. Colonel Beverley Robinson's Company, Loyal American Regiment, Flushing, Long Island, 18 June 1781. This, and other Regiments recruited at Flushing, Long Island were raised to fight in the Southern Campaign. (No other Tunis Brewer, of age in 1781, is known).6
  • He appeared on the census in 1790 at Phillipstown, Dutchess Co., New York, as Teunis Brewer, with a household of 1 male over 16 and 2 females. A Henry Brewer appears on the same census sheet, four listings after Teunis, with a household of 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16, and 3 females.7
  • He appeared on the census in 1800 at Philips, Dutchess Co., New York, as Teunis Brewer, with a household of 2 males over 45, 1 female over 45. He is enumerated next to John Brewer, Jr.3,8
  • John Brewer, Sr., John Brewer, Jr., and Teunis Brewer are all enumerated in the town of Phillips, Dutchess Co., New York on the 1800 Federal Census. John Brewer, Jr., and Teunis Brewer are recorded in succession on the same census sheet.
  • Peter Brewer is claimed as a son of Tunis Brouwer (from a source without supporting documentation) and although it is certainly possible, no records or evidence has yet been found to back this assumption. It is also possible that Peter is a son of one of Tunis Brouwer's brothers, and he may well not be a descendant of the Adam Brouwer line found in Westchester County at all.9

The first two dollars earned was by burning trees to make a clearing and selling the ashes. Those silver dollars are kept in the family as relics, their date being 1773, under the reign of Charles III of Spain. Wilhelmus married Jane Gray, and after years of labor and thrift he built a large two-story frame house, which is still used as a tenant house and is in a good state of preservation, though ninety years old. Wilhelmus died in 1841. He had one son, Harmon W., who was born at Stone Arabia October 18, 1781, the day before Cornwallis's surrender."13
  • From History of Montgomery and Fulton Counties, N.Y.: "One of the early settlers in the town, and in this part of it, was Harmen Visscher, the founder of the Visscher family whose eventful history is elsewhere given. On the Hansen patent, the same tract with the Visschers, and adjoining that place on the north, William H. Brower bought one hundred and fifty acres for $1 per acre from his father, who was one of the earliest settlers in the town of Palatine. The purchaser did not occupy this place until after the Revolutionary war, through which he served. One of the actions in which he participated was Montgomery's ill-starred attack on Quebec. On the retreat of the Americans from Canada, Brower had charge of one of the cannon as far as Springfield, Mass., where he was taken with the small-pox. At the close of the war he settled on the land he had bought, and built a log house. He was much troubled by wolves, which killed his sheep and even a colt. In course of time he built another house, which is still standing, being used as a tenement, and is represented on another page in a view of the home of his grandson, H.T.E. Brower. The latter has in his possession a Spanish dollar of the date of 1772, which was the first money his grandfather made on the new place. He got it by burning a tree, and taking the ashes to the potash factory which had been established at Johnstown by Sir. William Johnson."14

  • Willem Brouwer witnessed the baptism of Josias Drake , son of Josias Janszen Drats and Aeltje Adamse Brouwer, on 28 May 1682 at Amersfoort, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, (witnesses Willem Brouwer, Elisabeth Brouwer).9
  • Willem Brouwer and Elizabeth Simpson were members of the at Reformed Protestant Dutch Church, Flatbush, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, The list of members living at Gowanus is undated, however, it does state that Johannes Christoffelsz died on 22 Nov 1684, so it was recorded at some time after that date. Their entry reads, "left- Willem Brouwer and wife Elisabeth Brouwers- returned."10
  • William is named in his father's will dated 22 Jan 1691/92.11
  • Willem Brouwer appeared on the census in 1698 at Town of Brookland, Kings Co., New York, as Willem Brouwer, with a household of 1 man, 1 woman, 2 children, and 2 apprentices.12
  • He witnessed the baptism of Hendrick Brouwer , son of Adam Brouwer and Marretje Hendrickse, on 15 January 1699 at Old First Dutch Reformed Church, Breuckelen (Brooklyn), Kings Co., Long Island, New York, (sponsors Willem Brouwer, Angenietje, his wife).3
  • In an indenture dated 7 May 1708, Willem Brower and Martha, his wife, of Brooklyn conveyed to Cornelius Sleght of Newtown, Queens County, a house and garden spot in Brooklyn, "containing six rods in the front to the street and seven rods in the reare bounded easterly by the street or highway in the front, in the reare, westerly by George Hansons land, northerly by Thomas Knight's land and southerly by the lott of said William Brower, bought of Cornelius Vandewater. William and Martha Brower each signed with their mark.13
  • T.G. Bergen, in 1878, (NYG&BR 9:127) claims that William married 1st, Aeltje or Elsje ___, married 2nd Elizabeth Simpson, and 3rd, Marte ___. Hoffman in "Brouwer Beginnings" (TAG 23:204) states that "Several authorities credit him with a first wife Aeltje (certainly refering to Bergen) but no record has been found to substantiate such a claim." In a footnote Hoffman adds that "Willem Brouwer has also been credited with a wife Angenietje. This is based on the fact that Willem Brouwer and wife Angenietje appear as sponsors at a baptism in the Brooklyn church on Jan. 15, 1699 (Brkl.:175). This is the only instance in which she appears and is probably a mistake. However, we have no records of any children bp. between 1687 by Elizabeth and 1702 by Marta, so that he could have married Angenietje between these years."
  • In addition to the above mentioned references to other wives, Hoffman states: "Willem Brouwer and his wife were listed among the members of the Breukelen church, but they removed at a later date as follows from a note added to the membership entry. He was listed in the Kings County Census of 1698 with a family of 1 male, 1 female and 2 children as a resident of Breukelen. In 1704 and 1709 he was mentioned as a constable of Brookland (Breukelen). A Brkl. deed dated 5-7-1708 mentioned Willem Brouwer and Martha h.w. of Brookland."4

  • Willem Brouwer was born on 14 March 1766 at Dutchess Co., New York, He is recorded as the third son in his father's will. A William Brewer of Fishkill in 1800 is between the ages of 26 and 44, giving a birth range of 1756 to 1777. Neither a record of birth or baptism has been found.3
  • He married Sarah.4
  • Willem Brouwer died between 26 June 1849 and 1850.
  • Also known as William Brower.5
  • Named in his father's will dated Sep 1777, after eldest son Nicholas, and David. A chart and survey of the Hayadarosses patent and partly divided by Jeremiah, Jacob, william and David Brower, was made by Seth Baldwin, Surveyor. (I have not identified the location of the Hayadarosses patent).8
  • He is possibly the William Brower, who in an indenture dated 17 Feb 1795, William Brower of Westchester County, New York conveyed to Matthew Mamikle(?) of Charlton, Saratoga Co., New York, land in Saratoga County, the fourteenth allotment, lots no. 6 and 7. Willem Brouwer1,2,3,4,5

b. between 1610 and 1620, d. August 1668
  • Willem Brouwer was probably born between 1610 and 1620 at Nijkerk, Gelderland, Netherlands.
  • He married with banns published on 2 November 1648 at Dinteloord, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands, Lysbeth Drinkvelt.6,7
  • Willem Brouwer died in August 1668; probably at Beverwijck.8
  • He was buried on 3 August 1668 at Beverwijck, (now Albany, New York).8
  • Also known as Willem Brouwers.9
  • Early on, Jonathan Pearson raised the possibility that Willem Brouwer may be a brother of Philip Hendrickse Brouwer, "Willem (Hendrickse?), perhaps the brother of Philip Hendrickse, brewer, who was in Beverwyck as early as 1655, where he owned a house, lot and brewery, and became one of the original proprietors of Schenectady in 1664."10
  • Willem Brouwer is one of the three Brouwer family progenitors found in 17th century New Netherland/New York. He was for a time at New Amsterdam, settled at Beverwijck, and for a few years owned a brewery at Greenbos (Greenbush, N.Y. in present day Rensselaer County). He was (at one time) a shoemaker. His son Hendrick was among the first settlers of the Schenectady patent. Son William's decendants are largely those Brouwers found in Montgomery County (then Tryon Co.) through the 1700's and into the 1800's. Although a contemporary of Adam Brouwer and Jan Brouwer, Willem died twenty-five years before Adam, and at least thirty-four years before Jan. There is no evidence of any family relationship between Willem and either Adam or Jan.
  • On 21 April 1643 at Niekerck, Netherlands, Willem Brouwer, schoenmaecker (shoemaker) was made a Poorter (Freeman).11
  • Willem Brouwer's first appearance in the records at Beverwijck (now Albany, New York) was in January 1657. He was a master shoemaker (mentioned as such in 1661 and 1662), but in 1660 considered himself a principal trader. By 1664 he was receiving poor relief, and after his death his widow asked permission to renounce the estate so that she could "receive the same favor as other oppressed persons."12
  • "Willem Brouwer and his wife Lysbeth Drinkvelt Brouwer came from Qerland, Holland. He was a property owner as early as 1655 in New Amsterdam, and moved to Beverwyck (Albany) in 1657, where he died and was buried in 1668." (Note: the place name, "Qerland," given here has not been located in searches of the present day Netherlands. The baptism record of a Hendrick, son of Willem Brouwer and Elizabeth Drinckvelt, in 1652, in Amsterdam would imply that Willem was at least at Amsterdam before migrating to New Amsterdam in 1655).13
  • He came to New Netherland in 1655 William Brouwer, his wife and three children, were given passage on de Waegh, on condition that he act as reader or comforter of the sick on board the vessel which departed Amsterdam on 26 May 1655 and arrived at New Amsterdam on 13 Aug 1655.14
  • On 11 Oct 1655, at New Amsterdam, Willem Brouwer was among those summoned by the Court Messenger to come forward for the voluntary contribution and taxation required by a Resolution passed that same day. William Brouwer was listed as excused.15
  • On 8 Nov 1655, at New Amsterdam, Willem Brouwer as plaintiff brought suit against Isaac Mense, stating that he (Willem) sold the defendant 50 ps. of dry merchantable hides for fl. 700 in good Zeawan (seawant, or wampum) on the condition that whoever should go back on the bargin should forfiet a tun of beer; and says that he the next morning asked the defendant if he held to the bargin or not; if not he should pay the tun of beer, and he answered he would not pay the tun of beer. Willem requests payment of fl. 700 on delivery of the hides, and offers 24 gl. thereof for the Poor. Defendant says he was drunk, and he agreed for fl. 700 but that he was mistaken, meaning 100 hides for 700 gl. Matys Capito and Jan Jansen were, on requisition of the plaintiff, heard in Court and declared, they were present at the agrement, and that the bargin was to pay 700 gl. Zeewan for 50 hides, but that Isaac Mense said afterwards he was mistaken. The Court declared the aforesaid trade null and void and condemned the defendant Isaak Mense with a fine of fl.25 for the behoof of the poor with costs incurred herein.16
  • On 20 Mar 1656, at New Amsterdam, Willem Brouwer was sued by Thomas Applegate. Willem was found in default and the plaintiff was allowed to sue out an arrest.17
  • In 1657 Willem Brouwer bought a brewery at Greenbos (Greenbush, N.Y.) from Cornelis Cornelisz and Jan Witmond. He sold the brewery to Cornelis Van Nes and Jan Oothout in 1664.18
  • On 17 Dec 1657, Willem Brouwer stood surety for the sum of one hundred and twenty guilders to be paid by Jan Roeloffsen for the garden of Albert Gerritsen, won at auction in Beverwijck.19
  • On 25 May 1660 at Fort Orange, William Brouwer was among those who petitioned on behalf of the commonalty legally assembled, praying that no christian brokers be allowed to roam through the woods, and that Indian brokers only be allowed in the Indian trade.20
  • On 15 June 1660 at Fort Orange, Complaint against Volckert Jansen, William Brouwer, Jan van Aken and others, for having employed as Indian to bring other Indians to sell their furs to them; defendants having denied the charge upon oath, are discharged.21
  • On 15 July 1660 at Fort Orange, Complaints against Paulus Jansen, Rutger Jacobsen, William Jansen Schut, Andries Herbertsen, Harmen Vedder, William Brouwer, Cornelis Feynhoudt, Marcelis Jansen, Peter van Alen, Philip Pietersen Schuyler and Adriaen Jansen from Leyden, for going to the woods or employing Dutchmen as brokers to trade there with Indians.22
  • On 9 Nov 1660, at New Amsterdam, Willem Janszen van Berckelo, arrestant and plaintiff vs. Willem Brouwer's wife, arrested and defendant. The defendant in default. The same day, Burgomaster Allard Anthony, arrestant and plaintiff vs. Willem Brouwer's wife, arrested and defendant. Defendant in default, the plaintiff requests that the arrest be valid, which the Court declares. The particulars of the complaints are not specified.23
  • On 31 August 1661 Agreement whereby Goosen van Oort binds himself to work for Willem Brouwer as a journyman shoemaker: "On this day, the last of August 1661, Willem Brouwer, master shoemaker, acknowledges that he has engaged Goosen van Noort, journyeman shoemaker, and he, van Noort, that he has bound himself to serve said Bouwer faithfully in the making of shoes and what appertains, until the first day of May 1662, (said service) having commenced on the eleventh of this present month of August, for which service besides free board and drink, lodging and washing, he, Brouwer, at the expiration of the term, promises to pay him, Goosen, nine good whole beavers reckoned at eight guilders apiece, and if in the meantime Goosen shall have need of any necessaries of woolen or linen, or stockings, he Brouwer, promises to supply him at beaver's price, deducting the same from the aforesaid sum. All in good faith; done in Beverwyck in N. Netherland, date as above."24
  • Between 1664 and 1665 Willem Brouwer (Brouer) received, on a number of occasions, aid from the Deacons of the Reformed Dutch Church at Beverwijck/Albany. This came in the form of small amounts of money as sewant, and in basic staples such as beans, butter and lard. In 1666 he pawned stockings.25
  • On 29 Dec 1668, Lysbeth Brouwers (sic), widow of the late Willem Brouwer, deceased, presents a petition praying for permission to renounce the estate and that she may receive the same favor and mercy as other oppressed persons (In Aug 1668, the Deacons of the Dutch Reformed Church at Albany paid fl.40:15 for the burial of Willem Brouwer and fl.5 to his widow).26
  • Willem Brouwer's ancestry is not known. Jonathan Pearson, the 19th century expert on the families of Albany and Schenectady suggested that his father may be named Hendrick, as Willem gave, apparently his eldest son, that name. William Hoffman, in his manuscript notes, refers to Willem as "Willem Hendricksz Brouwer." However, whether or not Willem's father's name was Hendrick cannot be determined from the available records regarding Willem Brouwer. It is an assumption that may well be incorrect.
  • It must be emphasized that the placement of William Brower of Stone Arabia as a son of Willem Brouwer of Beverwijck is, at best, speculative. The placement seems to be based upon tradition apparently begun with Jonathan Pearson in 1873 and continued to this day. Pearson's reasoning may be solely influenced by the fact that the two share a common name and that William Brower (the younger) appears first in Schenectady, as do other children of Willem Brouwer (the elder). If Pearson knew of any other evidence to support this placement, he apparently never published or expalined it. To date, I can find no evidence that would meet modern standards of genealogical research, that would indicate that William Brouwer of Beverwijck, and Willem Brower of Stone Arabia, are father and son.
The placement here of William Brower as a son of Willem Brouwer is characterized as "Claimed."

  • Arendt Brower, in his will dated 10 July 1793, names his father William "deceased."10

William Brouwer1

b. circa 1727, d. before 16 December 1783
  • William Brouwer was born circa 1727 at Gowanus, Brooklyn, New York.
  • He married Meclitta van Duyn, daughter of Gerrit van Duyn and Altie van Nostrand, at New York City, New York, in December 1752 (license dated 20 Dec 1752).1,2
  • William Brouwer died before 16 December 1783.
  • Surname is also spelled Brower.3
  • Second son. He lived at Mill Hook and the Meadows in Brooklyn and later removed to Rombout Precinct, Dutchess County, at about the time of the American Revolution. According to Hoffman (TAG 24:100) this family is to be found in Fishkill, New Hamburgh, Wappinger Creek, and New Hackensack.
  • He appeared on the census in 1738 at Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, as one of the two male children in his father's houshold under the age of ten.4
  • , On 24 Aug. 1751, Isaac Sebring and Catharina his wife made an agreement to dig a ditch from Gowanus Bay to the East River, under certain restrictions, with, among others, Jury Brower and Abraham Brower of Gowanus. Wit: William Brower.4
  • The will of "Jeury Brower of Gowanus in the township of Brookland, miller", dated 18 Sep 1754, leaves his whole estate in the township of Brooklyn to his three sons, Abraham, William, and Adolph in equal shares, with Abraham to recieve £5 as his birthright. The three, Abraham, Wlliam, and Adolph, are names as executors.4
  • , On 20 Mar 1760, "Jurrey Brower of Gowanus, in the township of Brooklyn in Kings County on Nassau Island in the Provence of New York, miller" conveyed to "Abraham Brower and William Brower sons of the said Jury Brower of the same place," for £300, a parcel of land "situate lying and being in the township of Brooklyn...bounded easterly and southerly by the road or Kings Highway that leads from Flatbush to the ferry Northerly by Jacobus Degraw northwesterly to said Jurry Brower and Jacob Van der Hoven westerly to Jacobus Du Re Vois containing about twenty two acres..."5
  • He witnessed the baptism of Willem Brouwer , son of Jeury Brouwer and Elizabeth Van de Water, on 27 November 1760 at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, (sponsors Willem Brouwer and Margita Van der Water j.d.).6
  • William Brouwer witnessed the will of Henry Godwin on 1 September 1781 at Dutchess Co., New York; codicil dated 9 Mar 1782. Proved 5 JUn 1782. "Henry Godwin of Rumbout Precinct in Dutchess County, being very weak in body, occasioned by the ill treatment of a cruel and inveterate Enemy while in their hands as a prisoner of war." Mentions his wife Catalina; son Abraham Gates Godwin; three daughters Phebe, Helena and Henrietta. Appoints his wife and my trusty friend and brother, Samuel Demarest, executors. Witnessed by James Cooper, merchant, Adolph DeGrove, Jr., and Stephen Seaman. The codicil of 9 Mar 1782 instructs that if necessary part of he real estate be sold for the support of my wife and children. Also makes my trusty friend Obadia Cooper, an executor. Witnessed by James Wills, William Brower, and Daniel LeDew.7,8
  • His will was dated on 4 September 1782 probated 12 Jun 1786, calls himself "William Brower of Rumbout Precinct, Dutchess County, farmer, being weak of body but of sound mind and memory...". Names his wife Mattya, son Jeremiah to receive 10 shillings for his birth right & "to my real and personal estate upon Long Island and Staten Island I allow to be sold and fifty pounds a piece to be given to my children viz: Garrett Brower, William Brower, Letty Brower & Cornelius Brower in lieu of fity pounds given to my son Jeremiah some time ago." The remaining "part of said estate" to be divided among all the children (Jeremiah, Garret, William, Letty, Cornelius). Names as executors, his wife Mattya Brower, sons Garrett and William Brower, and Abraham Hoagland. Witnessed by Francis Bogardus, John Ackerman, and James Wills. On 18 Nov 1786, Garrett and William Brower executors of the will of William Brower deceased appeared before Judge Thomas Treadwell, City of New York "duly sworn to the true execution and performance of the said will."9,3,10
  • Despite being called, "of Rombout" on his will, William Brouwer does not appear anywhere on the Dutchess County tax lists from the period, and his will does not mention any property in Dutchess County, but does mention property on Staten Island and Long Island. William and his family were most likely in Rombout as it was a safe haven during the Revolution. Their property on Long Island, the site of the family mill, saw the most intense fighting during the Battle of Long Island in August 1776. It appears that William died before having the opportunity to return home.
