Sara Brouwer1

b. before 1743, d. after 1794
  • Sara Brower is named in the will of her father, Jeury Brower, dated 18 Sep 1754, to receive £30 on her marriage day, and £70 six years after his decease.
  • She witnessed the baptism of Abraham Bennet , son of Cornelius Bennet and Maria Brouwer, on 10 December 1766 at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, (sponsors de Vader, Sara Brouwer, j.d.).5
  • Hoffman, in Brouwer Beginnings, states that Sara married William Elsworth, Jr. (bp.1733). This is contradicted by both The Elsworth Family of New York City and the Stoutenburgh Genealogy which states that William Elsworth, Jr. married Hendricka Stoutenburgh. An RDC New York record of the Elsworth-Stoutenburgh marriage gives a date of 10 Oct 1756 (banns 5 Oct 1756). No records of a marriage for Sara and this William Elsworth has been found. It is likely that Hoffman was in error on this point.6

Brkl. Jul 4, 1761.This is confirmed in the Stoutenburgh Genealogy also. In this regard, I believe that Hoffman is in error and that the Elizabeth Ellsworth who married Abijah Whitney was the daughter of Christopher Ellsworth and Sarah Brower and not a William Ellsworth and Sarah Brower. Abijah was the son of Daniel Whitney and Thankful Burt. Also, Abijah's and Elizabeth's children were: in the following order: (1) Daniel; (2) John; (3) Jeremiah; (4) Mary; (5) Charity; (6) Joel; (7) Sarah; (8) Abigail; (9) Morris Fought; (10) James B.; (11) Abijah Ann. -- no Elizabeth! Their daughter, Sarah, bp. at the New York Dutch Church on 20 Mar 1741, has
been identified in at least one published source as having 1st married John
Benson on 3 Oct 1761 at the New York Dutch Church. I found a record of one
child, Hester, who married Samuel Walgrove at the Trinity Church on 23 Jun
1784. She then married John Mildeberger, son of Johann Adam Mildeberger
and Anne Elizabeth Pinder, for her 2d husband on 22 Jun 1763 at Christ
Lutheran Church in New York City. The New York Presbyterian Church records
indicates that Sarah died 28 Feb 1803 and that John died 9 Nov 1798. John
and Sarah had at least four children: (1) Elizabeth, m. Hartess Heron; (2)
    Catharine, m. 7 Apr 1795, New York City, Myndert Marselis; (3) John A., m.
    Ann De Witt; and (4) Sarah, bp. Tarrytown Mar 1773, d. 27 Jun 1865, m. 7 Apr
1800, James Fisher. I have corresponded with a descendant of this Sarah
Mildeberger and James Fisher. No children were named Cornelius by either
marriage but by virtue of a child "Hester" being born to Hester Brower and

Charles Vail writes, "My wife's grandfather lived on the west end of Long Island but lost his property and moved to the state of New Jersey but had his mill at Goanses burnt and other property destroyed by the British in the Revolutionary War. And when I knew the old man he lived in Paterson, New Jersey and was a very aged man and that was in 1815. I think his name was Abraham and he had four sons--Jerry, Abraham, Christopher and William. Christopher and William I knew. He also had 3 daughters--Sally, Caty, and Rebecca, the mother of my wife. My wife's mother is dead and so is all her brothers and sisters." Charles Vail also mentions speaking with "Catherin Cannon sister," who lives in Riverhead, whose mother was also a Brower, but from a different family.3

Bogardus Collection, Anneke Jans and Everardus Bogardus Descendants Association, Wilmington, Ohio. Privately printed. This work contains errors, among them the false account of Anneke Jans descent from William of Orange. The account of Pieter Adamsz Brouwer is also in error, and there may be other errors with the earlier Brouwer generations. Latter generations are recounted by descendants who lived in the latter part of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, and the ancestors who they describe were their parents and grandparents. p.20. Sybrandt Brouwer1,2

b. 29 August 1683, d. 3 December 1727
  • Sybrandt Brouwer was said to be born on 29 August 1683 at Brooklyn, Kings Co., Long Island, New York.3
  • He married Sara Webber, daughter of Aernout Webber and Jannetie Cornelis, at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, on 12 May 1706 (banns 10 May 1706).4
  • Sybrandt Brouwer probably died on 3 December 1727 according to Hoffman (TAG 24:24) who states, "for on these dates the records show that a Sybrandt Brouwer died; one of these dates applies to this man (the father), the other to his son." Totten (NYG&BR 56 [1925])) assigns the earlier date to the father, and the later date to the son. Sybrandt was clearly dead by 15 May 1737 when is wife is called a widow at the baptism of their grand-daughter Sara Brouwer.2,5
  • He was probably buried on 5 December 1727 at Gowanus, Kings Co., New York.1,5
  • Another early source says he was born 6 May 1683 (R.W. Vosburgh, who questions the accuracy). The F.J. Hill manuscript on Anneke Jans says born 29 Aug 1683. Neither date can be confirmed by any church or other records, no baptism record has been found. Sybrandt was a bricklayer and became a freeman of New York 6 Aug 1723. He and his wife had eight children baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church of New York.
  • He witnessed the baptism of Aarnout Quackenbos , son of Benjamin Quackenbos and Claasje Webber, on 15 January 1707 at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, (sponsors Sybrant Brouwer, Rachel Webber).6
  • In an indenture dated 30 Apr 1707, Sybrant Brower of Brooklyn, "eldest son and heyre to Jacob Brower late of said township deceased," conveyed to Abram Brower and Nicholas Brower, both of Brooklyn, for two hundred and twenty pounds, "his fourteenth part share" in the Gowanus property formerly occupied by Adam Brower. Sybrant Brower signed with his mark.7
  • Sybrandt Brouwer witnessed the baptism of Jacob Brouwer , son of Jacob Brouwer and Petronella de la Montagne, on 24 September 1710 at Old First Dutch Reformed Church, Breuckelen (Brooklyn), Kings Co., Long Island, New York, (witnesses Sybrandt Brouwer, Antje Brouwer).8
  • Sybrandt Brouwer witnessed the baptism of Reynier Quackenbos , son of Jacob Quackenbosch and Anna Brouwer, on 29 March 1719 at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, (sponsors Sybrandt Brouwer, Dievertje Woertendyk).9
  • Hoffman in "Brouwer Beginnings" (TAG 24:24) adds a very long footnote to the sketch of Sybrant Brouwer. He states that the information found in Geneal. of the State of New Jersey, by Lee, regarding Sybrandt's son Jacob is entirely wrong, and that "similiar, and even worse, information is contained in the Newark Evening Journal, no.4925" regarding this same family. Hoffman states that the "very inaccurate Harlem Register by Toler..." is "...utterly unreliable" regarding its description of descendants of Sybrandt Brouwer.2
