Jacob Brouwer

b. July 1762, d. 1784
  • Jacob Brouwer was possibly born in July 1762 (this date is unconfirmed).1
  • He married Agnes Allen at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, on 12 March 1782.2
  • Jacob Brouwer died in 1784 at possibly New Brunswick, Canada.1
  • Jacob Brouwer is a possible son of Adolf Brouwer. Jacob's widow, Agnes, does appear in New Brunswick after the Revolution, but there is little record of Jacob. It is possible that Jacob may have been named for Jacob Verdon, who would be his paternal grandmother's father. At this time there is not enough evidence to confirm a father - son relationship between these two.

  • Broadalbin was part of the Sacandaga Patent of 1741. It was a part of the former town of Caughnawaga in northern Montgomery County. It was first settle about 1770. The town of Broadalbin was created from the towns of Johnstown and Mayfield in 1793, before Fulton County was formed. It is at the south end of the Great Sacandaga Lake which was created in 1930, and is actually a reservoir which was greated by the daming of the Sacandaga River. Mayfield was also a part of the Mayfield Patent of 1770. It was also a part of the original town of Caughnawaga. Mayfield was established as a town in 1793.
  • Although additional evidence would be welcome, it is almost certain that the Jacob Brouwer, baptized in 1785, son of Jacob Brouwer and Margitta Triet, is the same Jacob who appears in Fulton County, New York in the 1800s as an adult.

Note that the placement of Johannes as a son of Daniel Brouwer and Maria Koning is incorrect. That couples' son Johannes married three times and lived in Kentucky. The Johannes who married Tryntje Jersey is a son of Abraham Brouwer and Antje Nix. Hereinafter cited as DAR (New Jersey), New Jersey Collected Miscellaneous Genealogical Data.

Jan Brouwer1,2,3,4,5

b. circa 1628, d. after 17 November 1702

  • Also known as Johannes Brouwer.

  • Jan Brouwer is one of three 17th century Brouwer family progenitors found in New Netherland/New York. He emigrated to New Amsterdam in 1657. He was a blacksmith and lived at Flatlands, Long Island, New York. Sons Johannes and Hendrick appeared to have settled at Hempstead in Queens County, while son Pieter remained at Flatlands. Son, Derek, was among the Dutch inhabitants at Flushing, Queens Co., in 1698. Third generation descendants are also found in Monmouth, Somerset and Hunterdon Counties, New Jersey, apparently moving there with the migration of Kings County residents to the Raritan Valley area of New Jersey beginning in the first decade of the 1700's. In the past, the close proximity of Jan's family with that of Adam Brouwer's has caused many to confuse and interconnect the two. DNA testing of descendants conducted through the Brewer DNA Project http://www.familytreedna.com/public/BrewerDNA/ and reported in "DNA: Adam Brouwer Berckhoven, Elias Brouwer, and John Brewer" (NYGBR 138 [Oct.2007]:245-49) has demonstrated that any possible common ancestor between the two would have lived tens of thousands of years ago.

[S1379] William Bogardus, "E-mail correspondence from William Bogardus," e-mail message from Bogardus, William to Chris Chester and et al, To Paul Brewer, et al; Apr. 4, 2007; "Yes, Paul, I believe you are entirely correct in your analysis that it was Jane Brouwer, daughter of Nazareth Brouwer and Ann Rozell, who married Thomas Benjamin Hill. Over the past many years I have heard from at least 12 others who have claimed that this Jane Brouwer was the daughter of Sybrant
Brouwer and his wife Sara Webber- - Sybrant being the son of Jacobus Brouwer and Anna Bogardus. I had never confirmed this connection, of course, and had advised each one that this Jane was more likely in the line of descent from one of the other brothers of Jacobus - - probably Nicholas. When I received the abstracted data from the Supreme Court case I referred to in my e-mail of Feb. 25, 2007, Subj: "Family of Nicholas BROWER".. that was when I first learned that Nicholas and Jannetje Colyer had a son Nazareth - - and thus also the more complete family of Nicholas and Jannetje
as I had outlined. I do not know the dates of birth or baptism of the children of Nazareth Brouwer and Ann Rozell, except that of Cornelius who was born 9 Nov 1730, who married Mary Archer.
I can also advise that there is an excellent lineage from Nazareth Brower Hill and Catherine Edwards in Volume II - Part I, of "Loyalist Lineages of Canada", published by the Toronto Branch of The United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada, 1991, pp. 513-515. From the 12 other correspondents on the lines of descent from Thomas Benjamin Hill and Jane Brower, they had only indicated continuing descendants through their children Eleanor and Nazareth.". 5. [S1381] Paul Brewer, "E-mail correspondence from Paul Brewer," e-mail message from Brewer, Paul to Chris Chester, April 3, 2007: "According to the Hill family records:
Thomas Benjamin Hill married a Jane Brouwer Their family included children:
    Nazareth, Thomas, Eleanor and Ann.
Nazareth Brouwer Hill, the son of Benjamin (Thomas) Hill was born in New
York State, Dec 5, 1752. He grew up in New York State and learned a weaver's
trade. Afterwards he settled on one hundred acres of land in New Haven,
Connecticut. In 1778 he married, in Trinity Church, New York, Catherine
Edwards, the daughter of Captain Robert Edwards.
During the American Revolution Nazareth Hill was a scout for the British
Army. He returned to New Haven, Conn, after the war, leased his land to his
brother, and then came to Canada. He is listed with the loyalists at the Bay
of Quinte (1790) and then settled in Marysburg, Prince Edward Co., Ontario.
The Hill family like many other families, around 1900, were trying to show
that they were descended from Jacob Brower and Annetta Bogardus. I have
omitted information about Jane's ancestry, that is included in the document
"The Trinity Church Story", as the dates, etc, are obviously in error.
However, I believe that the information stated above is probably accurate.". Hereinafter cited as "Paul Brewer e-mail."

The chart shows a line of descent from son, Pieter Adamse Brouwer and his wife, Pieternella Uldricks; their son Abraham Pieterse Brouwer and his wife Lea De Maree; their son Daniel Brouwer and his wife Maria Koning; their son Johannes Brouwer and his wife Tryntje Jersey; and their children Antje, Abraham, Peter and David. Note that the placement of Johannes as a son of Daniel Brouwer and Maria Koning is incorrect. That couples' son Johannes married three times and lived in Kentucky.
