He assigns him six children born between the years 1767 and 1779. If correct, the last would have been born 99 years after the birth of his grandfather which is highly unlikely. It may be that all, or most of the children assigned to Nathaniel no. 70, are incorrect. They may be grandchildren. Records of their births are not found in the Groton VRs (Barbour Collection). He settled with his son Thomas in Wethersfield, Connecticut in 1641-42. He removed to Pequot, now New London in 1649 where he resided six years and his new barn which stood on the corner of Hempstead and Granite Streets was used as the first house of worship in the new town, and the call to service was the beat of a drum. He finally settled at Mystic in Stonington, as he was one of the men appointed by the General Court of Massachusetts to an official position in the orginization of the town of Stonington in 1658. He died and his will was probated in March 1665 and his son Dea. William Park of Roxbury, Massachusetts was his executer. He served in the early Colonial Wars. He married first Martha, daughter of Capt. Robert Chapen in Edmundsbury, England. Married second, Mrs. Alice Thompson, they were doubtless married in Roxbury and soon removed to Wethersfield, Connecticut. His wife died before 1660." p.527-528. Gives Robert's birth date as 3 Jun 1580 in Preston, Suffolk, England.. Hereinafter cited as History of Stonington, Connecticut. Https://archive.org/details/historytownston00wheegoog.
  2. [S139] David Livingstone Parke, Robert Parke 1580-1665: Immigrant from England in 1630 with the Winthrop Fleet (Wyomissing, Penn.: David Livingstone Parke, 1994), "Robert Parke was made a "freeman" in Wethersfield in 1639. Among those setteling in Wethersfield were Robert's brother-in-law, Clement Chaplin, who was the Ruling Elder of the local church and later Treasurer of the Connecticut Colony. Next door to him was John Thompson, presumably the eldest son of John and Alice (Freeman) Thompson. His father died in Northamptonshire in 1628, and his mother, who later married Robert, had come to America in the Winthrop Fleet. In 1643 John Thompson moved to New Haven. This may have had a bearing on promoting the marriage that took place the next year. The marriage of Robert and Alice was approved by a curious order of the General Court in Boston stating that he might "proceed in marriage with Alice Thompson without further publication". Alices's family consisted of ten children: John, the eldest aged 33, Anthony and Wiliiam who also settled in New Haven, Mary who married Joseph Wise, Bridget who married Capt George Denison in 1640, and Dorothy who married Thomas in 1644 in Wethersfield. The others either died young or stayed in England. So there were two marriages in 1644, Robert to Mrs. Alice Thompson, and Thomas to her daughter Dorothy. It seems logical that Robert moved up the street to fill the vacancy left by Alice's son John while Thomas and Dorothy took over the Parke house.
In 1649 Robert sold his lands to Thomas, moved south some 40 miles and became one of the first proprietors of a new town, Pequot, now known as New London. Thomas appears to have followed his father to that area three years later according to land records. It is possible that Robert's move grew from his friendship with the Winthrop family, John Jr., soon to be Governor of the Connecticut Colony, and his brother Deane. They were among the settlers on the banks of the Mystick River. The Winthrop's and Robert, along with another settler, Jonathan Brewster from Plymouth are recorded with the title, "Mister", while all other men are called "goodman" or had no prefix. Robert was a New London selectman in 1651 and a representative for the town in the General Court meeting in Hartford in 1652. In that year he sold his New London house to William Rogers and settled on land purchased from Pastor Blinman to the east, on the banks of the Mystick River. Here he spent his remaining years. He was designated by Court order along with George Denison, William Cheseborough, Thomas Stanton and Walter Palmer to manage the area called Southertown, later Stonington. This was still part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1662, King Charles II gave a new charter to Connecticut, enlarging its borders. John Winthrop Jr., who had been the colony's governor since 1657, was now governor of the new Province, serving until 1676. Wheeler's, "History of Stonington" states that Robert served in the Colonial Wars. As the average life span was then less than 40 years, it is more likely that it was his son Thomas who actually served rather than Robert. By 1660 Robert was now 80. Of his family only Thomas lived near him. William who had arrived in the winter of 1631 on the "Lyon" had remained in Roxbury. It is likely that his sister Anne and brother Thomas lived with him until the return of their father in 1639 (Robert made two voyages to America, sailing back to England in between). Mention of the first child Martha has not been found other than her baptism in Oct 1603 at Semer. Still living in Woolpit, Suffolk, England was the eldest son Robert aged 55, whose wife was Susan. William 53, had become one of the most prominent citizens of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1636 he married Matha Holgrave. Martha, 19, who had just married Capt. Issac Williams was now living in Newton, Massachusetts on a 500 acre farm. There was also John 11 and Deborah 9. Four other children had died earlier. The children, John baptized 1611 and Jane baptized 1613 in Ringshall, are not found in the records and are presumed to have died. Thomas and Dorothy had eight children, all living near their grandfather. Robert's will was drawn up and signed on 4 May 1660 when he reached 80 years of age, possibly indicating that he was then not in good health. The will appointed Robert's eldest son William as executor. "All houses and land at Mystic on both sides of the river", some 170 acres, was left to him. A third of the estate, "in land or good pay" was given to Thomas, and 50 pounds was left to Samuel, "in case he shall first come and demand the same in Roxbury within 7 years next." The fact that Robert's will does not mention Richard Park of Newton would indicate that there were no close family ties. The diary of a neighbor, Thomas Minor states, "the 4th of ffebruarie mr perke departed this life and was buried the 7th day being Tuesday in the year 1664." It should be noted that at that time the new year started later, so in "present time" the year of his death would be 1665. Robert's grave marker no longer exists where he was buried in the Whitehall Cemetery, a short distance from his home. Today the interstate highway I95 divides his home lot from the cemetery. In 1930, on the 350th anniversary of Robert's birth, a group of his descendants placed a tablet to his memory on a boulder. The Parke Society met in New London in June 1980 on the 400th anniversary." "On 28 February 1629/30, a Robert Parke of Easterkeale, Lincolnshire, wrote to JOHN WINTHROP , expressing his interest in making the migration to New England in 1630 [ WP 2:212-13]. The only evidence we have that he did make the voyage is a statement by Savage that Robert Parke "went back the same year carrying an order by our Governor to his son John in England to pay money, which is in my possession and may be the earliest bill of exchange drawn on our side of the water" [ Savage 3:347]. This document has disappeared from sight, and until it reemerges, the evidence that Robert Parke was in New England so early as 1630 seems quite slight.".
