Broyhill, The Brewer Families of Colonial Virginia, 1626-1776: with notes on the migrations of their descendants into North Carolina and other states (Tullahoma, TN: Brewer Researcher, 1992), page 92. No. G1. Lists William as the eldest son of George Brewer (he most likely is not the eldest) and gives him a lifespan of "1705??-1799," the double question marks indicating an estimate. Assigns William a wife, Susannah, "1710??-(18)17" which would imply that she lived about 107 years (she most certainly did not). Broyhill notes that the 1748 Brunswick Tax List includes four men named William Brewer. Between 1743 and 1768, seven Virginia Land Patents were issued in Brunswick County to one or more men named William Brewer. Broyhill's account of William Brewer is certainly incorrect. • William Brewer was certainly born prior to 1700 and may well have been born prior to 1680. When he arrived in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia is not known, and any relation to other persons named Brewer found in Isle of Wight County is not certain. The given names William, George and John are found both in William's family and in the family of George Brewer of Brunswick Co., Virginia. However, a family relationship between the two (William and George) has not been demonstrated. William names four sons and four daughters in his will.

  • He died before 28 August 1833.
  • William Brewer is found on the 1810 census without an adult female in his household. The 1820 census records an adult female over age 45 in his household, and in his will he names his wife as Dorothy. From this it appears that Dorothy is likely a second wife of William, and is not the mother of his children, all of whom were adults prior to 1810.
  • William Brewer and William Brewer, have been claimed as one and the same. Proof of this claim has not been found, and it is doubtful that Nicholas Brewer's son William who was in Chatham Co., North Carolina, while still holding land in Greensville Co., Virginia in 1797, and is likely found in Chatham Co. in 1800, is the same William Brewer who first appears in Orange Co., North Carolina, with a family, in 1800.6
