Notes for ALFRED JAUNCEY KETCHUM:

When a child, Alfred was taken by his Aunt Agnes (Jauncey) Nesbitt when he was given up to die of small pox, and at her own home in New Jersey, nursed him and brought him up; "The estrangement said my father caused by this separation between mother and son was ever marked and while my father was always anxious and willing to serve his mother, he was never known to call her mother." He was versatile: a sea captain, he had a natural gift for cabinet making, played the flute, and was clever at mechanics. I used to puzzle about the nationality of these Ketchums who chose to live so long in British territory. Was grandfather an American? I asked my father. Yes of course, he replied emphatically. He once set up a pipe organ in an English church in Hamilton, and as soon as the job was finished, went in, sat down, and played Yankee Doodle on the instrument. He did not love the British. He died at the age of 53 on board his ship "Medora" while it was at Nevis.... leaving his widow Elizabeth Wood and many children." (written by grandaughter Mamie).
