earliest ancestor of the family of whom we have any knowledge. He was a

resident of Boston in 1658, but how much earlier we do not know. Tradition says

he came from London accompanied by his mother but of his father there is no

record. He appers to have been resident os Scituate, MA in 1661 where he owned

a farm of 80 acres at the well-known shipyard a little below Dwelly's Creek. He

also had extensive lands on Cordwood Hill and also at the southwest of Hooppole

Hill, which latter were sold to Nathaniel Brooks in 1723. The house of Edward

Wanton stood near a bank of the river on the land now used as a shipyard and on

the spot occupied by a smaller workhouse. Before he left Boston he became a

convert to the faith of the Quakers. Mr Deane in his history of Scituate says

"sverity of the MA govt towards this new sect having been carried to the extent

of executing three of them in 1659, 1660, and 1661. EW was an officer of the

guard on one or more of these occasions. He became deeply sensible of the

cruelty, injustice, and impolicy of these measures, was greatly moved by the

firmness with which they submitted to death and was won entirely by their

addresses before their execution. He returned to his house saying "Alas,

Mother! we have been murdering the Lord's people" and taking off his sword, put

it by, with a solemn vow never to wear it again. From this time he took every

opportunity to converse with the Friends, and soon resolved to become a teacher

of their faith" It is said that he built the first Quaker meeting house in MA.

EW carried on the business of shipbuilding with great success at Scituate, and

held a distinguished place among the enterprising settlers of that town. We

learn too by its ecclesiastical history that Mr Wanton was a most successful as

a religious teacher in the Society of Friends. His last visit to Newport as a

representative from the quarterly to the yearly meeting was in 1716 when he was

85 yr old. He died on the 16th of Oct of the same yr soon after his return and

was buried on his plantation says Mr Deane, a few rods northeast of his house

where several of his family and the family of Rogers have since been buried. He

died with all his faculties unblurred, mind clear, piety fervent, faith

unwavering and active as he nearer approached its realization, from which

standpoint he could often review his past life and with soulstirring eloquence

and deep sympathy exhort all to stand fast in the faith. The farm still bears

the name of this venerable man, though it has passed into the possession of

another family more than a century since. He was probably married before he

left England. In Boston two children were born to him- Edward in 1658 and

Margaret in 1660, both dying young. His wife died in 1661. Soon after taking up

residence in Scituate, he received a visit from a Quaker minister recently

arrived from England who recommended to him a second wife a woman in that

country with whom he was acquainted, a correspondence between the tow parties

followed which soon led to proposals of marriage. The proposals were accepted,

the lady at once came to America and in 1663 the parties were married. The

isssue of this marriage were Joseph 1664, George 1666, Elizabeth who married

Edward Scott of Scott Hall, Kent, England 1668, William 1670, John 1672, Sarah

and Margaret twins 1674, Hannah who married James Barker of Scituate 1677,

Michael 1679, Stephen 1682, and Philip 1686. pg 275-280.

Historical Tract No 3 as having taken place May 5 1742. Drake in the Dictionary

that Mr Wanton was Gov from May 1734 to July 5 1740 and in a footnote that he

died in office. There waas a general Assembly session on the third Tues. in

June 1740. By the record it appears that Gov Wanton was present. There was

subsequently July 15 1740 a session in which this a record of the first

business: Voted that the Hon Richard Ward Esq be chosen Gov of the colony in

the room of the Hon John Wanton Esq late Gov deceased. Mr Bartlett in the same

RI Historical Tract No 3 pg 60 makes another mistatement, saying that John was

laid in the Coddington burial ground where a marble monument marks his resting

place- he was not buried there and there is no marble monument. The Wantons

were all laid in a vault in the Clifton burial ground, Golden Hill St and had

no inscriptions except coffin plates. The Record of the Quaker Meeting at

Newport states that Gov John Wanton died 5 Jul 1740 aged 68 yrs

Hon Gideon, formerly Gov of this colony, in 74th year, at Newport

Biographical Cyclopedia pg 79

Wanton, Governor Gideon son of Joseph and Sarah (Freeborn) Wanton, was born at Tiverton, Oct 20 1693. He held the office of General Treasurer of the colony 12 years 1732-1744, and two years later succeeded William Greene as Gov of Rhode Island. This office he held for one year and in 1747 he was elected a second time and was in the office oone year. He took an active part in the stirring events of the period in which he lived. Soon after his installation as Gov, he was called upon to furnish troops to assist in carrying on the War against France, which she had declared Mar 15 1744. An expedition having been planned to proceed to Cape Breton, RI responded to the call for soldiers. Her troops also took part in the siege of Louisbourg and when that place was taken they remained to garrison the captured fortress. We are told that "the people of RI went into this war with great spirit and no man took deeper interest in it than the Quaker Gov of RI". Mr Bartlett says "that although a Quaker, he was a belligerent one, and fully equal to the emergency". and had he been Gov and Capt General of RI in 1861, would have been among the first to send a regiment of RI volunteers to Washington. Through life, Wanton was distinguished for his talents and for the influence he exerted in the affairs of the colony. He was married Feb 6 1718 to Mrs Mary Codman, who died Sep 3 1780.and was buried in the Friends' burial ground, Newport. His own death occurred Sep 12 1767. He had four children Gideon Jr, John G, Joseph, and Edward. The house in which he lived is still standing in Broad Street, Newport.

Joseph was an opulent merchant of Newport and connected by blood and affinity with the wealthiest and most prominent families in the Colony. His portrait, evidently an original, in the Redwood Library at Newport, and of which a copy has been made for the State House in Providence, shows him as a remarkably handsome man. He was called one of the most courtly gentlemen in the Colony, of pleasing manners and cultivated tastes. In his history of the Narrangansett Church, Mr Updike says that this Joseph was in 1764-1767, elected deputy governor through the Hopkins influence. This is evidently incorrect as there was a Joseph Wanton Jr, son of Gov Joseph who had been for many years a member of the General Assembly and who it is believed was deputy governor. There is a letter (see Peterson's Rhode Island pg 209) from Stephen Hopkins to the people of the state, dated Apr 16,1764, in praise of the character of the Mr Wanton who was deputy governor under him, in which he says, "he is but a boy about thirty four years old". Now, Gov Joseph being born in 1705 was then fifty nine years of age which clearly shows that he was not the deputy governor as supposed.

American Loyalist Claims Vol 1 by Peter Wilson Coldham

Joseph Wanton of Newport RI, deceased, by brother William Wanton. On a former claim Commissioners found that in 1775, Joseph Wanton had signed rebel oath to preserve his liberty and property, and it appeared that his political principles were subservient to his commercial interests. Claim: two farm houses and other buildings burned at Prudence Island by order of the British Navy; firewood cut from the estate by Navy; three vessels destroyed on evacuation of Newport; farm house and building on Honeyman's Hill; farm on Connanicut Island with the island adjacent called Gold Island; house, wharf, and stores in Newport called the Point, house and lot on Thames St at the corner of Parade; wharf and stores in Thames St etc... Examination: Claimant produces certified copy of will of James Honeyman dated Jan 16 1767, devising estate to his four daughters Elizabeth Wanton, Susanna Redwood, Catherine Tweedy, and Penelope Bissett; also conveyance of Honeyman's Hill 15 May 1778 from William Wanton and wife Elizabeth to Lt Col James Campbell.

Jul 19 1780

"Governors for 300 Years 1638-1954 Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" by Ralph S Mohr @1954 pg 114, 234-235.

Joseph Wanton

Governor: May 1769 to Nov 7 1775, deposed

Born: Aug 15 1705 in Newport, RI

Died: Jul 19 1780 in Newport, RI

Buried: Newport, RI Golden Hill Cemetery

Joseph Wanton was the 4th and last of his family to serve as governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. He was the son of Governor William and Ruth (Bryant) Wanton and was born in Newport, RI Aug 15th 1705. Joseph received no formal education but had the benefit of the culture of his father's home and his friends, and acquired a knowledge of shipbuilding and seafaring occupations. He was admitted as a Freeman in 1728 and was appointed deputy Collector of Customs at Newport in 1738 and held this position for the next ten years. He was first elected Governor in April 1769 and was annually re-elected to this office for the next six years. On Nov 7th 1775, Governor Wanton was deposed by the General Assembly on account of his continued loyalty to the British Crown. His troubles had begun, however, early in the first year of his administration. The British revenue sloop "Liberty" was destroyed at Newport Jul 19th 1769, the first overt act against Great Britain in America. On June 10th 1772, the British revenue schooner "Gaspee" was burned by unidentified persons off Gaspee Point, and the British tea was burned in Market Square, Providence, on Mar 2nd 1776. On April 22nd 1776, a thousand militia started, or was ready to start for Boston on receipt of the news of the Battle of Lexington, and the General Assembly voted to raise an Army of Observation of 1,500 men. This last act drew a protest from Governor Wanton who considered that his duty to the Crown precluded allegiance to the cause of liberty. He was at first however, only suspended from office on May 3rd 1775.

The fortunes of the Wantons declined during the Revolution. At the height of their prosperity the firm of Joseph and William Wanton had been engaged in a large general merchandising business which included extensive dealings with the Brown brothers in providence. During this adversity Governor Wanton bore his reverses with fortitude. He continued to live in Nwport where he retained the respect of his neighbors who did not molest him. He had married Mary, daughter of Mr John Winthrop, and they were the parents of 8 children, 3 sons and 5 daughters.

Joseph Wanton died in Newport, July 19th 1780. He was a large man of fine appearance and gracious manner who liked to dress well and live lavishly.

"Biographical Cyclopedia" pg 79-80

Wanton, Gov Joseph was a descendant of Edward Wanton, who emigrated from London to Boston about the year 1658, and died a Friend at Scituate, Mass at age 85. One of the sons of Edward- Joseph the eldest_ settled in Tiverton in 1688. He and his wife were preachers in the Society of Friends. Another son, William in 1704 settled in Newport, and became a successful merchant. He was Governor of the colony of Rhode Island under the Royal Charter in 1732 and 1733. John Wanton another son, also a wealthy merchant of Newport, and a distinguished Friend, was Governor of the colony immediately after his brother, and held the office six years, from 1734 to 1740. Gideon, son of Philip, another son of Edward and, like his uncles William and John, an enterprising merchant of Newport, was Governor of the colony in 1745 and 1747. The subject of this sketch, joseph, was the son of Governor William Wanton and was born in Newport in 1705. He inherited the taste of his family for the mercantile pursuits, and like them became an opulent merchant in his native place. By blood and affinity he was connected with the wealthiest and most popular families in the colony. He was elected Lieutenant Governor of the colony in 1764 and 1767, and in 1769 was chosen as successor of Gov Jonas Lyndon, and was annually re-elected until 1775, when although again chosen to fill the office, he was not confirmed by the General Assembly, because of his opposition to a resolution which was presented to the Assembly, to effect that na "Army of Observation" be raised "to repel any insult or violence that may be offered to the inhabitants; and also, if it be necessary, for the safety and preservation of any of the colonies, to march out of this colony, and join and cooperate with the force of the neighboring colonies". Gov Wanton protested against the passage of this resolution, which however was passed over his protest. The "Army of Observation" consisting of 1500 men was raised and General Nathanael Greene appointed its commander. An act was passed by the General Assembly to prevent Gov Wanton from performing the duties of Governor, he was deposed from office, and the office was declared, for the time being vacant. During the occupancy of Newport by the British he lived in comparatively retirement. Whatever may have been the real feeling which he cherished for the English government, he committed no act which was followed by the confiscation of his estate. When the British evacuated the town, and the Americans returned to its possession, he remained without being molested during the brief period which elapsed before his death, which occurred Jul 19 1780. Gov Wanton's wife was Mary, dau of John Still Winthrop of New London, Conn, by whom he had three sons and four daughters. 1) Joseph, who was a Episcopal clergyman at or near Liverpool, England, 2) William, collector of customs at St John's Nova Scotia, 3) John who died when a child 4) Ann wife of Winthrop Saltonstall of New London. She died 1784, leaving five children. Among them was Mary married Nov 29 1789 to Thomas Coit of New London. They were parents of two Episcopal clergymen, Rev Dr T W Coit and Rev Gurdon S Coit. 5) Mary, married Capt John Coddington, 6) Elizabeth married Thomas Wickham of Newport, 7) Ruth married William Brown, who was appointed by the British Government Gov of Bermuda, 8) Catherine, twice married, first to a Mr Stoddard, and second to Mr Detileur a surgeon in the British Army.

!MISC: Genealogies of RI Families Vol II pg 307- There has been a question who the Joseph Jr was who was a lieutenant governor in 1764-1767 as Gov Gideon Wanton had a son Joseph born in 1730. In the record of births, at Newport is the name of Joseph Wanton born 1730 (his father's name is not stated). Now Gov Joseph who was born in 1705 had a son named Joseph who was his eldest child. We find too that by the records of Harvard College, Joseph Wanton Jr born Feb 8 1730 entered college at 16 and a half yrs of age. Again Mr Hopkins in 1764 says the Mr Wanton who was elected deputy governor was thirty four. All these evidently refer to the same individual and show that it was the son of Gov Joseph who was deputy gov under Hopkins and furthermore that he and not Gov Joseph as has been supposed was a graduate of Harvard. On the 3rd of June 1771,

George Bissett preached a sermon in Trinity Church, Newport at the funeral of

Mrs Abigail Wanton late consort of the Honorable Joseph Wanton Jr who died on the 31st of May.

Ruth Brown, wife of Governor Brown, late of Salem, and daughter of the late Governor Wanton, at London, Eng. Gazette of Oct 19 1799

Notes for WILLIAM BROWNE:

see Corbusier's Peniston Pedigree, Peniston notes- John Sargent and his

half-brother William were devoted to each other throughout their lives and both remained loyal to the crown. On the other hand, Paul Dudley Sargent espoused the popular cause and married a daughter of Thomas Saunders, a revolutionary... Katherine Winthrop lived to see two of her sons banished from the country under the Act of 1778 and her third son strongly entrenched in the opposing forces...(Bermuda Historical Quarterly, pg55, no date).

He came to Bermuda as Governor later in his life. He was born in Salem in

1737, graduated from Harvard in 1755, third in his class and married his first

cousin (A daughter of Governor Wanton of Rhode Island) and by that marriage

there was a double connection with John Winthrop, the first Governor of

Massachusetts. He became Colonel of the Essex Regiment, Judge of the Supreme Court and a loyalist. Nothing could persuade him to join the "Sons of Liberty". He therefore lost his great estates in both Mass and Connecticut and was included in the Banishment Act of 1778 and the Conspiracy Act of 1779. His losses were considerable. They included 9,663 acres in Lyme, New London County, House in Salem- 37 acres in Salem, 157 acres Forest River Farm, 2/3 of 4000acres in Charlton, 2/3 of 164 acres in Fitchburg, Middlesex Co, 2/3 of 110 acres in Achley, 285 acres in Fitchburg, a small share in the province of Maine of 600,000 acres- his claim was 2,500 acres, several lots in the Towne of Hadley (Bermuda Historical Quarterly, pg 56, no date). After being banished from America and having lived in Wales for four years, he was appointed Governor of Bermuda in 1782. "History of Bermuda" says of him: "The high character of the Governor Browne has preceded him in the Colony and he was joyfully received on his arrival". He proved to be a very popular governor, listening to Bermudians and their problems and making wise and just decisions. Was Governor 1781-1788. Returned to London. see "The British Americans- The Loyalist Exiles in England 1774-1789" by MaryBeth Norton @1972 (E 277 .N66- FSU)....lived in Cowbridge, Wales with half-brother John Sargent after London and Birmingham 1776- 1781.

see " A New Age Now Begins" by Page Smith @1976 (973.3 Sm Big Rapids Library)

After the beating of James Otis (friend of John Adams) in 1769 by a British

Customs Commissioner Robinson in a fight in a Boston coffee house, the patriots of Boston became incensed. Because the British officers were beyond the reach of their wrath, they focused on William Browne of Salem, a suspected Tory (he had voted in favor of rescinding the Circular Letter that the Massachusetts Assembly had sent around to all the colonies). He was a member of the Great and General Court. Rumor had it that he had broken a Mr Grisley's arm during the fighty, as Mr Grisley attempted to assist Mr Otis. William Browne was taken by the crowd to Faneuil Hall for a preliminary hearing. pg 323. pg 1801: In Connecticut in 1779 eight slaves of William Browne of Salem- Great Prince, Little Prince, Luke, Caesar, Prue and her three children petitioned for freedom. see "The Loyalists of Massachusetts" by James Stark

journal of Samuel Curwin mentions William Browne in England 1775.

pg 242: Elizabeth Browne married Admiral Sir Isaac Coffin Mar 1811 in

England, they separated a few years later. What relation?

born at Salem in 1737, was a grandson of Gov Burnet. He graduated at

Harvard College in 1755, third in his class. He married his cousin, a daughter

of Gov Wanton of Rhode Island, and was doubly connected with the Winthrop

family, the wives of the elder Browne and Gov Wanton being daughters of John Winthrop, FRS, greatgrandson of the first Gov of Mass. was a colonel of the Essex Regiment, a member of the General Court in 1768, was one of the 17 Rescinders, Judge of the Supreme Court, one of the Mandamus Councillors who was sworn in. Colonel Browne was esteemed among the most opulent and benevolent individuals of the province before the Revolution, and so great was his popularity that the gubernatorial chair was offered him by the "Committee of Safety" as an inducement for him to remain and join the Sons of Liberty. But he felt it was his duty to remain on the side of the government, which represented law and authority, even at the expense of his great landed estates, both in Mass and Conn, in the latter there were fourteen valuable farms, all of which were afterwards confiscated. After the passage of the Boston Port Bill he was waited upon by the committee of the Essex delegates, which consisted of Jeremiah Lee, Samuel Holton, and Elbridge Gerry. They informed him that it was with grief that the country had viewed his exertions for carrying into execution certain acts of parliament, calculated to enslave, and to ruin his native land, that while the country would continue to respect for several years paid him, it resolved to detach every future connection all such as shall persist in supporting or in any countenancing the late arbitrary acts of Parliament: that the delegates in the name of the country, request him to to excuse them from the painful necessity of considering and treating him as an enemy to his country, unless he resign his office as councellor and judge, Colonel Browne replied as follows " As a judge and in every other capacity I intend to act with honor and integrity and to exert my best abilities and be assured that neither persuasion can allure me, nor menaces compel me to do anything derogatory to the character of a Counsellor of his majesty's province

of Massachusetts. I cannot consent to defeat his Majesty's intentions and

disappoint his expectations by abandoning a post to which he has been

graciously pleased to appoint me". He was an addressor of General Gage, was included in the Banishment Act of 1778 and in the Conspiracy Act of the year following. He was in London as early as May 4 1776 and gave his fellow exiles some particulars relative to the evacuation of Boston. His wife who complained of her treatment at Salem and Boston after his departure does not appear to have joined him in England until the Spring of 1778. In 1781 he was appointed Governor of the Bermudas and administered the affairs of these islands in a manner to secure the confidence of the people. Under his judicious management the colony flourished. He found the financial affairs of these islands in a confused and ruinous state, and left them flourishing. In 1788 he left for England deeply and sincerely regretted by the people. He died in England Feb 1802 aged 65. He bulit "Browne Hall" at the summit of Browne's Hill in Salem in 1740, named after Browne Hall in Lancashire England the home of his ancestors (see pg 451).

Messrs Lane, Hankey & Co London

Dear Sirs___ Your esteemed favour of the 1st Feb enclosing inv. & B/L for

cargo of coals shipped on board the Lady of the Lake on your acct, I received

in due course & I have now to advise the arrival od that vessel here on the 2nd

inst.

The season having so far advanced that the trade of the steamers to

Wilmington having now expected to be principally to Bermuda instead of Nassau,

in consequence of the prevalence there of fever during the summer months, which

subjects them to quarantine at Wilmington after the 20th idem, I deemed it

would be to the advantage of all parties concerned in the Lady of the Lake to

order her in here & I hope shortly to be enabled to wait on you with acct sales

of her cargo..... John T Bourne (St George's)
