Messrs Lane, Hankey & Co London

Dear Sirs___ Your esteemed favour of the 1st Feb enclosing inv. & B/L for

cargo of coals shipped on board the Lady of the Lake on your acct, I received

in due course & I have now to advise the arrival od that vessel here on the 2nd

The season having so far advanced that the trade of the steamers to

Wilmington having now expected to be principally to Bermuda instead of Nassau,

in consequence of the prevalence there of fever during the summer months, which

subjects them to quarantine at Wilmington after the 20th idem, I deemed it

would be to the advantage of all parties concerned in the Lady of the Lake to

order her in here & I hope shortly to be enabled to wait on you with acct sales

of her cargo..... John T Bourne (St George's)

Information provided for Thomas Smith Family comes from:

Elizabeth Everson Smith Carey, Dau of Albert A, son of Arthur Henry Steele Smith; The Rev George H Smith, Cyclopedia of Methodism; T Watson Smith, History of the Methodist Church Vol H; Minutes of the NB and PEI Conf of the Methodist Church, 1874-84, Series J, pg 5; The Wesleyan, Jun 15 and Aug 15 1874; Jan 12 1898; Sep 2 and Nov 5 1903.

Thomas Smith born Feb 17 1812...died Jun 1__, a native of Bermuda...called when 22 yrs old. He laboured under the direction of the Missionary Committee in Liverpool, Halifax.

Minutes of Conference pf (1874) and Maitland, was ordained in Charlettetown PEI. From this providence he was sent to the West Indies. On one of his stations in the island of Dominica, he was prostrated with ? from the effects of which he never fully recovered. He next spent four years in Hamilton, Bermuda, and from there was sent to Newfoundland. He preached with acceptance and success on the Port De Grave, Bonavista, St John's, and Brigas Circuits. In Bonavista he witnessed a great revival, the fruits of which remain to this day, as numbers are there who were converted through his ministry, and for whom his name is fragant with blessed memories. He was next sent to Nova Scotia in the year 1881, and stationed at Truro, then Mill Village, then Barrington.

Six years ago he was compelled to retire from the more active work of the ministry, to be what he could as far as his strength would permit. He preached occasionally, assisted in the prayer meetings, and took part in the various services in the town. During the winter he grew feeble and only once came to the house of God to attend the service of ?. He was impressed with Bunyan's words: "after that they shut up the gates, which whaen I had seen I wished myself among them". His last public act was at the funeral of a friend, when with tremulous voice he prayed for the bereaved family, and touchlingly breathed forth hope of reunion in heaven. For a few days only he stood on the brink of the river of death. He responded fervently in prayer as a few hours before he died he was commended to God. He was trusting on the atonement. His last words were "Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel and afterward receive me to glory" And then he clamly slept in Jesus, in the sixty-second years of age, and the fortieth of his ministry. He was a good man. He manifested a deep interest in the welfare of the Church of Christ. He was fervent in his prayers. He preached only Christ-Jesus and Him? To say there was no infirmities- no error of judgement, would be to say he was not human. His sermons and prayers were filled with the words and spirit of the Bible, but his weariness is over. His protracted sufferings are ended. The aching, the pain, the watching have ceased. The pilgrim has passed over Jordan. He has entered into rest. The servnat has gone to his account. The memory yet lingers. How beautiful it is for a man to die upon the walls of Zion. To be called like a watch-worn, and weary sentinel, to put his armor off and rest in heaven.
