Stephen Righton:

deposition before His Majesty's Council, 12 August 1686

The declaracon of  Stephen Righton yt severall months ago yt I this depont went to Towne with my brother, Willm Righton who came newly into ye Island, to give ye GoverE an att of his arrival; when I went wth him into ye GoverEs hall ye GovE was walking towards ye westward end of the hall who turned about & asked who that was, & my brother answered he was come to give him an atto of his arrival to ermudas; ye GoverE came apace up to him & tooke his cane in both hands & gave him two great blowes, on ye head wch I did hear my brohter much complaine of, my brother not giveing ye GoverE any misbeseeming words, and further saith not.

The declaracon of  Stephen Righton that to my knowledge ye GoverE Coll. Richard Cony did force me to pay ten shillings for two sea-briefs, or els ye vessels should not have liberty to proceed on their voyages and also two shillings for a tickett wch was not usuall to be paid by ye former GovE as I know of, I doe believe one of ye aforesd two shillings was for the Secretie---
