Eugene Lyon Smith of St David's Island

Eugene Lyon Smith lived at the West End St David's. He was captain of the tugboat "Gladsfen" and worked closely with Dr Beebe. He helped Dr Beebe transport the bathysphere to deep water where the famous descent off St David's Head was made.

Mr Smith married Miss Susan Tucker in 1874 and raised 4 children. Two of the children, Reeve and Howard lived on the land where the Carter House sits. They supplies the American market with lily bulbs. Prior to WWI, the Carter House was surrounded by sloping fields of easter lilies.
