Joseph Hayne Rainey

1832 - 1887
Joseph Hayne Rainey was born 21 June 1832 in Georgetown, SC. His parents were slaves. He was conscripted as a steward on a Confederate blockade runner at Charleston. As war continued, he escaped with his wife Susan to Bermuda on a blockade runner, settling in St George's. He opened a barber shop in the old kitchen of the Tucker house. The shop has been kept as part of the Tucker House museum, part of the Bermuda National Trust. He and his family left Bermuda for Charleston in late 1866, later to become one of the first Black members of the US House of Representatives.
