By His Excellency Samuel Day Esq'r, Leiut. Governor, Cap.t Generall and Commander in Chiefe of these islands and Ordinary of same

To all to whom these presents shall come or may concern Greeting.

Whereas Mary Gilbert, widdow relict of John Gilbert Sen'r late of Smith's Tribe, her late husband deceased, and anturall mother of Thomas Gilbert a minor and sone by him the said John Gilbert hath humbly requested mee the Governor and Ordinary aforesaid to grant unto her the guardianshipp of her said sonn Thomas dureing his minority untill hee shall attaine his age and capacity of making his owne choice and election.

Now know yee therefore that I the Governor and Ordinary aforesaid have directed, authorized, and appointed and by these presents do committ authorize and appoint her the said Mary Gilbert to bee guardian and to take care and charge of her said sonn as well of his person and of his estate reall and personall, that the same may bee managed without any imbeizeling or any wilfull or negligent damage or prejudice . And that he the said Thomas the minor may bee educated and brought upp according to his degree and capacity. And I doe hereby chiefly charge and require her the s'd Mary Gilbert to render mee an account of her proceedings in and about the premisses then thereunto required. Given under my hand and the Publick seale of these islands the thirteenth day of March in the thirteenth yeare of the reigne of our Sovereigne Lord King William the Third over England, and in the yeare of our Lord 1700.
