Minutes of HM Council 31 Oct 1698:

"Bermuda
At an assembly met and convened at the Session's House in St George, on Monday the 31st day of October, 1698, under the Government of his Excellency Samuel Day, Esqr., Hi Majtie's Lieut-Governor, Commander-in-chief, &c, of these Islands, and in the tenth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord William the Third over England, &c, King, Defender of ye ffaith, &c.
The Assembly being met at the Session's House of St George, by order of His Excellency the Governor, the List was called over, and then by the Governor's order, the Assembly met at the church, where, by the plurality of votes, Capt Ffrancis Jones was chosen Speaker. Whereon the House attended the Governor in Council for approbation of the same: and the Governor generously accepting of the choice ordered their attendance the next morning.
So the House adjourned till the next morning."
