Minutes of HM Council: 25 May 1687

At a Councell held at St Georges May the 25th 1687.

The petition of severall of the inhabitants for liberte to transport the old tobacco to London was read and for the reasons therein signified together with severall otheres the petition granted.

Capt Copeland Lea made a complaint against Col Richard Coney who in his time of government bound him with surties in bond of five hundred pounds he haveing no reason for to doo (as the Complainant considers) desires to be acquitted of said bonds: Col Coney being examined upon the matter promised to see the bond against ye order of Counsell.

Upon a controversey depending betwine Mrs Marie Watlington, widdow, and her son in law Mr William Greene, Mr William Pitt was called for an evidence and sworne whose evidence was ordered to be recorded upon the hearing of which the Court was of the opinion that the discharge given Mrs Watlington by Mr Greene was sufficient discharge according to a contract made between them. And that no forgery of the right as was alleaged against him did appear. Whereupon the said Greene craved reparation, upon which ye Court left him to ye law for his remidie.

Mr John Bristow, Deputy Marshall and keeper of the Gaole offered a petition with an amount charging Mr James Smailes for money due to him for his imprisonment upon which ye Court ordered Mr Smailes to pay him the some of three pounds five shillings and the Court are of the opinion that neither the Sherife nor Marshall could take baile in Smailes, his case.

Capt William Keele a person whome Col Richard Coney in the time of his Government sent prisoner to England and Mrs Sibillah Righton, widdow of Mr William Righton, who Coll Coney likewise sent to England a prisoner, humbly offered their petitions for reparation of the damage they have sustained ordered that they bring in their charge the next counsell.

Mr Wm Pitt his oath doe very well remember that my Aunt Mrs Marie Watlington did promise to make up the 60 pounds gave my couson Marie Watlington by her father in ready money 150 pounds in ready money and 50 pounds more she would give in Negroes, a bond and other things, and likewise she did promise also to give Mr William Greene present possession of the land my unkell had gave her daughter, she repossessing her again during her life. And she would pay him yearly 6/10 but as she would pay it out of the leagasey gave my Couson Marie by my deceased Unkell Francis Watlington & further saith not.   William Pitt..... sworne to before the GoverE & Counsell May the 25th 1687... test.
