"I being chosen a juryman ye last assizes where I tooke notice of action wch I did not like of wch was to this effect, I being a lodger at Mrs. Brownes, Mr Anthony Peniston came & asked Mr Fra. Jones & myself to go wth him to Jno. Burtons, as I understood, to be merry which when we came we were conducted into a chamber where was a good many of those sitting & ye most part of them were of ye jury yt were then upon ye king& countrys business, but when I understood what I was desired to come there for it was to be one to try a business depending between Mr Samll Trott & Mr Anthony Peniston before it came to ye court only to see who should gett ye better, as they said, but in fine ye jury was called formably over by Mr Richard Stafford, & desired to doe it as truly as if they were sworne but I said I should have liked their humour if it had been done by consent & Mr Trott had been there to speak to his business himself for they did not know what he would say, but they proceded & Joseph Pitt pleaded in Mr Trott's behalf & Anthony White for Mr Peniston and when they had done, we yt were not of ye Jury came out of ye chamber soe after some time I understood that there was a bond drawne for a certain sume of mony for every man to signe to, & to be forfeited if any should speake of what was done on yt effect but I refused to signe to anything of yt matter for I told them I did not concerne myself of ye business neither would I binde myself, as Fra. Jones & I were going to our lodging he tould me the Jury were all concluded yt Mr Trott was cast excepting himself for he was for Trott and if I was called upon my oath this is ye substance of what I saw & heard as witnes my hand May ye 16th 1686.
