The following address of the General Assembly of Bermuda

Minutes of the General Assembly of Bermuda
 9-11  June  1795

Tuesday, June 9 1795

House met. The list having been called over by order of the Speaker, it appeared that the following members were absent without excuse, on day to which the House stood adjourned: Thomas Seon, John Jennings, John Paynter Jr, Edward Stiles Esqrs, Thos(?) Savage.

Mr Butterfield moved for leave to read for the second time a bill, entitled "An Act for the sale of the Glebe Lands lying in Paget's Parish, and thereby rendering it more profitable to the present and future incumbents".

Granted accordingly, and the said bill was read; whereupon a motion was made by Mr Butterfield, that the said bill should be engrossed; but the same was objected to on principle of the rector not yet having satisfied the House of his approbation of the measure.

Mr Butterfield moved for leave to read for the second time the bill entitled "An Act for the Preservation of the several harbours in these Islands, by the removal of Hulks, and remains of vessels which still continue to lie therein, and pointing out the mode to be observed in the removal of any hulks, wrecks and remains of vessels in future, and for the prevention of damage by the improper heaving of ballast, rubbish, and gravel into the said harbours."

Granted accordingly, and the said bill was read a second time, when upon motion, the same was ordered to be engrossed.

Then Thomas Seon Esq appeared in his place and made such an excuse for his not attending on the day to which the House was adjourned as was satisfactory to the House.

Upon motion, ordered that the following persons be appointed on the committee of public accounts in the room of Mr Darrell, Mr Perot, and Mr Bessert(sp) , who were absent viz Mr Burch, Mr B Harvey, and Mr Morris.

Then Mr N Tucker attended and delivered to the House some letters from the Public Agent at London, which were read.

Wednesday, June 10

House met. Mr Burch form the Committee on the public accounts reported progress.

When, on motion, the following message was ordered to be sent to his Excellency the Governor, by Capt. Seon and Captain Harvey. viz.....(section missing from copy)... address be presented to his Excellency the Governor, as well to remedy the evils complained of tin the said petition, as to prevent the like inconvenience happening in the future to any of his Majesty's loyal subjects of Bermuda, to prepare the said address:    Col. Jennings, Mr R Tucker, Mr Butterfield, Capt G Harvey., Major Bascome.

Thursday June 11.

House met. Benj. Cox. Esq. one of the Commissioners for Hamilton, reported to the House, that the Commissioners had provided for the Custom-House Warehouse, at Hamilton, a complete set of scales and weights, for the ascertaining occasionally the duties payable to his Majesty on the importation into that port of any goods which may be subject to duty, agreeable to the resolve of the last session.

Mr Butterfield, from the committee appointed to draw up an address to his Excellency the Governor on the subject of the petition presented to the House from Mr Daniel Tucker, acquainted the House that the committee had got through the business and begged leave to offer the address which was done, when, on motion for the same to be fairly transcribed, Mr Burch proposed that the sense of the House should be taken whether or not...(copy ends).
