Minutes of HM Council:  17 November 1739

Att a Councill  holden at the House of His Excellency the Governor adjournment on Wednesday 17th November 1739.

His Excellency's proposall about the Secretary Clerks of the Councill and Assembly giving security for their preserving and keeping safe the records etc. Committed or to be committed to their care. Being by him laid before the Councill for their approbation it was by them approved of this day and sent to the Assembly afterwards for their approbation.

Passed and allowed the account of Capt. Leonard White for the late repairs of Smith's Fort amounting to the sum of thirteen Pounds Seventeen shillings and eightpence which was ordered to be paid by Nathaniell Butterfield Esq Treasurer.

The return of the Committee that last night met with Mr. John Slater's being made was read in the words following:-
Wee whose names are hereunto subscribed having been this day duly appointed by both houses to meet at the House of Mr John Slater in St George's to consider of and make an estimate of the expence that may attend the repairs of the severall fortifications at the East end of these Islands as also for making batteries on the little head at St Davids Island and old Castle persuant to teh return made by us on the 4th last month are of the opinion that the sum of Two hundred pounds may be sufficient for repairing the ffortifications and making the Batteries aforesaid.

These members of the Assembly attending acquainted the Councill that there were severall members then attending their House who were not qualifyed and that their House desired they may be qualified whereupon Andrew Auchinleck Esq. and Coll. Francis Jones withdrew and went to qualfie such members.

Ordered that the Secretary pay no money out of the Powder money Ffund for the future but that he renders his Account quarterly to this Board of all the Powder and Powder money that he shall receive and the money arising thereby to pay into the hands of the Honoble. Nath. Butterfield Esq. Treasurer who is to purchase Powder for the Country's use therewith at the cheapest rate he can.
